Soul Revolution: How Imperfect People Become All God Intended

Rate this book
You've heard it all before. The promises for a better life get tiresome after awhile, because you know they don't deliver. However, they do touch on a profound and inescapable truth. You were created to live your life out of a rewarding, richly textured relationship with God and others--and deep down, you long to experience that kind of life. But how? Are you willing to devote sixty days to finding out? Soul Revolution may be one of the most important books you'll ever read. In it, author and pastor John Burke guides you on a journey of experiential discovery. Called the "60-60 Experiment," it has already made a profound impact on thousands who have discovered what it means to actually "do life" with God.

It's not a bad book, and the concept of a minute-by-minute walk with God is a good one. I just got tired of everything having to be "revolutionary", "radical", or "life-changing". I'm happy that for some people, a daily walk with God always feels radically different, but for me, that's just not what a daily walk with God is about. God loves me whether or not I'm a radical person. This is a response to the purely Western view of Christianity and our culture of needing everything to be radical, epic, and fantastic.

I guess I could have summarized that by simply saying that it was a little over the top for me. Each page of the book says the same thing.

Good long read on soul transformation

Book very strongly reminds me of our needing to rely/abide in Christ, for apart from Him we can do nothing. Each day, I asks for God's to be in specific areas of my life. I would say this book has a part in that. I also liked that it was a longer read than I originally thought, which tells me that the author is more serious about getting into various elements of soul transformation.

written by the pastor at my church a great way to connect daily with God. There is also an app for your phone for a 60/60 experiment every hour just another way to connect and reflect on God especially with all of the trials and tribulations your day can bring.

This is an inspiring book that challenges the reader to work toward being connected to God every moment of the day every day. The book is meant to be read while the reader is participating in what the author calls the 60-60 Experiment. The participant is to get a watch or timer that can be set to beep every 60 minutes, and when the reader hears the beep, he or she is to think about God and reflect on how he or she has done in staying connected to God over the past hour. It would be best to do this with a partner or small group. The book is sprinkled liberally with stories of people who have found blessings and transformation when they stayed more connected to God. I found the stories to be inspiring. Each chapter concludes with an "assignment." I found this to be a helpful book.

This is a good companion for anyone who is doing the 60/60 experiment with a small group or church. Sometimes I feel as if it jumps around or is not as focused as it could be in certain sections. That being said, I have MANY highlighted portions throughout the book. The overall theme of the book - the challenge - is to be constantly connected and radically responsive to God's call on our life and Mr. Burke portrays this throughout the book with poignant thoughts and stories from real people.

This is the first book I’ve read of my pastor’s.

I’m impressed. It is well written, well-organized, and balanced with Biblical stories, contemporary stories of John’s and others’, and practices to assist with improving our understanding of and relationship with God.

The book has all the basics of the spirit of Gateway Church at the north campus, such as ‘no perfect people allowed’ and the 60/60 experiment as a technique to work on a connection with God.

I would say this book can be a journey for you if you allow it.

Happy reading.

Most of the book was helpful in ways to keep in a relationship with God. The one part that I really disliked was when he talked about tithing. I believe in tithing but the author only gave examples of people who decided to tithe and were monetarily blessed many times over. This sounded too much like the prosperity gospel. God blesses people but this book only gave examples of monetary blessings for those who tithe.

Overview of Christian living

An unusual insight into the Reality Show of Life is displayed and validated by author John Burke. It is the guide to establishing
a close relationship with God and the effect this can have on community. I recommend the reading to anyone of discernment. The choice comes to us of our willingness to accept God's gifts.

I listened to this book, it was good and encouraging to read! On the onset and in reading I was so ready for this radical change which was referenced in the book a lot but it’s not like you can read a book and everything suddenly changes but definitely has some great points and challenges and wonderful testimony!

This book was used as an All Church Study for my church. It was a four-week study at church while we read the book at home. We learned to do a 60-60 exercise where once an hour we talked to God, either in prayer or just a discussion with Him regarding something happening in our lives. The book had many personal testimonies from people who had tried this 60-60 exercise. Great reading!

This has the potential to be a life changing read if we will be willing and committed. I give the content 5 stars, but for whatever reason it was a book that took me a long time to get through and I didn't just enjoy it for the pleasure of reading. But definitely so glad I read it and would recommend!

Tiny experiment that leads to big changes! I got this book as a companion to the 60/60 Experiment. Reading this while during 60/60, helped deepen my faith and opened my insight to Bible verses I thought I knew.

I’m not a religious person (I’m not *not* religious though either) and I enjoyed my journey with this book. I almost rated it three stars because there were some things I didn’t necessarily agree with, but the stuff I found helpful was worth a 4 star rating IMO

It’s a good book to read. It inspires you to work on being the person Christ wants you to be. I still find hard to do the 60-60. I hope it will come naturally to me.

Great book. Really appreciated the 60-60 experiment, moment by moment walking with Jesus, and all the powerful stories of transformed lives from Gateway Church. Now one of my top favorite books.

Very interesting to find out about Laubach; the most I knew about him was that my mom was a Laubach tutor when I was a kid.

John Burke, Soul Revolution
John Burke’s book Soul Revolution challenges the reader with one simple, yet powerful idea-living in the presence of God. Burke explains that success in the Christian life does not come from trying harder but from abiding in the presence of the Spirit.
Burke begins by describing the varying strategies people adhere to, consciously or unconsciously, to find fulfillment. Borrowing theology from Lewis, he proposes that God revealed in Jesus is the source of satisfaction. He calls the reader to embrace the task of living in consistent, faithful union with God and experience the joy and transformation that naturally results. Exploring the image of the fruit-bearing vine of John 15, Burke explains that fruit is not something that we produce but rather, something which flows from our connection with God. From this foundation, he proposes the strategy outlined and discussed through the core of the book, the 60-60 experiment. In this experiment, Burke challenges the reader to connect with God every 60 minutes of their waking life over the course of 60 days.
As the reader embarks on this journey, Burke explains how he begins to be more in tune with God and the leading of the Spirit on a moment by moment basis. At the outset of the journey, Burke that the 60-60 itself is not goal but strategy. He encourages the reader to “fall forward,” rather than becoming discouraged when they fail at the discipline, to jump back in as quickly as possible. Through the following chapters, Burke charts how the a life of connectedness results in taking steps of faith, abounding love towards others, and deep, honest relationships in community. As Burke fleshes this community out, he reveals that a community of God dependent people can begin to live out ideals of loving correction, reconciliation, and forgiveness that lives up to the Christian ideal. Burke encourages the reader to adopt spiritual running partners, identify specific areas on which to focus, and apply intentional practices to cultivate one’s spirit. In the final chapters, Burke imagines the impact of a life lived in connection with God. He explores the implications of living as Christ’s body, encouraging the reader to surrender themselves fully to God as expressed in witness, acts of service, and material generosity. Imagining the impact of Spirit-filled church, Burke closes with an impassioned plea to the reader to take up the 60-60 experiment for a lifetime. He explains that a life of connection with God should be the norm for the Christian, and urges the reader to make a concrete, renewable commitment to continue implementing the lessons learned in the experiment.
Soul revolution is a simple book with a powerful message. It has atrocious cover art and at times drags as Burke chases rabbit trails. But Burke’s ability as a story-teller and vision caster is evident from cover to cover. John Burke clearly captures a profound truth; it’s all about grace. Moreover, he gives the reader a practical strategy which emphasizes God-dependence rather than individual activity. Every ‘strategy’ can be misused, but Burke’s was very helpful to me. Soul Revolution reinvigorated me to live in constant communion with God and provided a helpful plan for maintaining the connection. The stories of success and transformation were encouraging, and the straightforward, pastoral exhortations were appreciated. This book is simple. But at least for me, it was needed and valued.

This is the second book I have read by Mr. Burke and I am looking forward to reading a third. Soul Revolution is second in what seems to be a 3 book series. The last book in the series (Mud and the Masterpiece) was recommended to me by a stranger in Starbucks; so thankful for that random recommendation that I have gone back and purchased the rest of the books. Soul Revolution is amazing stories of the people who are part of the Gateway Church in Austin and their attempt to live the Christian life. Through these inspiring stories John Burke puts forth a challenge to keep you connected to God in what is called a 60/60 challenge. I am in the middle of this challenge and am looking forward to what God has in store for me. Well worth your time.

Interesting book. The relation shaped ministry of John Burke gets us to know more of "how to deal with the perfect imperfect people that seek church". It's not my full cup of tea, but it is interesting enough to help us to get acquainted with modern church problems. Dealing with workaholics, alcohol addicts and much more, it tells us how Gateway Church (based in Austin, Texas) handles those who seek comfort, help, a new life or just (as stated by some testimonies) a pure and simple test to the church motto.

I didn't know what to expect from this book. I though it would be another so called "revolutionary" book that just was not. But it is. It invites you to do a 60 day experiment, that does change your life. John Burke writes with the truth, does not sugar coat the challenge that we have before us, but he does remind us that God is on our side, and has great dreams for us to accomplish through (and with) the body of Christ. Loved it!

I really liked most of this book, but I waited too long to write this review to remember which parts I didn't like. I have not participated in the 60-60 experiment, but I have thought about trying to find a group to do that.

LOVED this book. If you're a Christian....this book is for you! Best Christian walk book I've ever read (other than the Bible, of course). Thanks to my good friend, Joan, for recommending it to me.
