Lezano provides a great overview to many concepts photography. This book is a good primer to basic equipment, filters, lighting techniques, exposure settings, and more. It is most useful for the digital photographer, but there is enough info on film photography to be helpful, too.
Lezano addresses issues from the studio to the outdoors, including macro photography, monochrome, portraits, nighttime, etc. If could only have one book on photography, this would be the one.
I found this book to be very helpful & full of information that I will now be able to use out in the real world with my camera. I look forward to being a more confident photographer now that I know the basics.
Admittedly I skimmed over some sections, because they were focusing on technology that was probably relevant at the time the book was published, but not really relevant anymore. The rest of the information was a good overview of concepts.
Found this at the library. I'm a filmmaker, but can't find too many books on lighting that aren't too vague or don't talk about $4000+ equipment I'll never buy. This book goes over all the basics and in going over the basics I increased my filmmaking lighting knowledge by more than double. In the next paragraph is everything I now know about lighting because of this book.
Ex. Wide angle lenses make you focus more on the subject in front of you and are different if you aren't using a full frame camera (ahem ahem T3i, C100 Sony F3), using a telephoto and standing back can make the background look closer to subject than if you used a shorter lens and stood closer. Surprisingly the flash photography/photo studio chapter helped me the most. You can put the softbox really high to mimic the sun and you can use flashes at different spots to make sure there are no shadows. You can also put the flash behind the person to make the person kinda glow. Change flash with a light and walah these basic principles work with video. Also making something softer makes a person look dreamy or unreal, and that's what certain filters can do. Diffusing a light can do that too.
A nice overview of many aspects to photography in general and digital photography specifically. Lezano gives additional emphasis to certain topics and sub-topics, and short shrift to others but all in all covers a lot and I appreciated how he gave explanations to some specific topics I had never seen covered before. I am not sure I would call this a complete guide as the title states, but Lezano covers a lot and does it well for many of the topics.
