Excellent boxset . A variety of exciting and suspense filled stories. The writing was outstanding and the flow was smooth. Great strong characters and well developed plots. I loved these books.
A MYSTIC MURDER - Witches of Hemlock Cove, Vol.1 Grace Angelo lives with her two older sisters in their mom's former guesthouse (which they now use as HQ for their bakery business), and the town all know they have a history of being, well, paranormal. She used to be a detective on the PD, so sometimes they call her in as a contractor. When the local bar owner is found dead inside their industrial oven, the bakery is shut down right before a huge contract is due. Will they go bankrupt if they can't fulfill their baking agreement? Grace jumps in to help solve it, regardless of her (well, her oven's) involvement.
Paranormal elements: Her cat & dog are the embodiment of her mom & dad. Her eldest sister has magical abilities, as does Grace.
Series has potential if it gets better after book 1...Witch/detective in New England...needs more body but the potential is there.
MURDER ON THE HILL - Harley Hill Mysteries, Vol.1 Harley owes quite a bit of money...too much, in fact. When some goons come to collect and trash her friend's apartment where she's staying, she hits to road and enlists the help of Cole, her on again off again "coworker" on some of her "gigs" to get her a new ID. Cole actually sets her up with a gig with Silvers Finders Agency, where owner Cordelia is starting fresh after a fall out with her assistant (aunt). Together, Harley and Cordelia end up deeply involved in a murder/mystery/jewel heist, which is somehow all connected.
This duo works. I read 2 & 3 before this, so it was nice to see how it all began. I think, though, that had I read this first, I might not have continued on with the series. That said, maybe the same will be true for the Hemlock Cove series, so I'll probably go check out more there. Certainly believable...Harley comes clean pretty early on, and Cordi is cool with it...almost too supportive. Wonder how much pushing Cole did on that front.
MURDER ON THE PAGE - Harley Hill Mysteries, Vol.2 Cordelia and Harley are in business: Silvers & Hill Finding Agency, to be exact. They "find" pretty much anything for a fee. In this episode, they're on the case in pursuit of an ancient book: Doomsday Diary. Entwined with that is the pursuit of a killer. In the background of all this their personal lives are going on, as if work doesn't keep them busy enough. Reality, isn't it?
As with #3 in the series (which I read first), I was slightly disappointed that the whodunnit wasn't entirely solvable by the reader. This is one of those where details emerge that weren't in the lead up, so you can guess but it's not an informed guess. SPOILER ALERT Where will Harley and Cole end up? Well, they're both in the next one and still together, but it's certainly a vein to follow. Cole as a character isn't defined in this story, so if I hadn't read #3 first, I would have felt lost. Won't keep you on the edge of your seat, but I think it's geared toward the right audience in that respect.
Just finished this book and can't wait to read the next book. If you're not into Harley Hill and the rest of the Finder's crew you certainly will be when you read this! I'm not very good at writing reviews because I don't want to give anything away, so just trust me on this one, o.k.
Three clean cozies from Kennedy Chase, all containing humor. The first had paranormal elements as the main sleuth is a witch. The next two star Harley Hill a reformed CST burglar.
Begin with very real and likable characters and add in complex and exciting plots and you have s great series! I'm looking forward to reading more about Harley and her friends and family.
If a book keeps me reading it's good. If I don't want to put it down because I want to see what happens next-- it's very good. Can't wait to continue on to the next in the series.
The first story was about three sisters and their supernatural heritage. The two sisters are running a bakery in a quaint small town with old prejudices against their witch family. Their older sister is a recluse but interacts when they need her magical help. Their two pets appear to be the reincarnation of family that help in their sleuthing. It's a light, enjoyable story that will evolve. The second and third stories are about a girl, her past and future colliding. She is a spunky street-smart girl trying to better herself when she becomes involved in helping "find" things. With the help of her new best friend, they humble through case after case that makes you wonder about all the loose connections and how it will end. I like when any author can make me laugh out loud. I will definitely read more from this author as her witty style make these stories endearing to read.
Finished the three books in this mystery box set and have already downloaded the next Harley Hill book. I thoroughly enjoyed Harley and her friends. Great characters, lots of laughs, and interesting mysteries.
Of this trilogy of novels, I must say my true favorite was A Mystic Murder. I will be checking out whether the series continued or not. The other two were just not to my personal taste.
I love these book's not your same old cosy these books have a lot of adventure and loveable characters, I'm hooked let's read some more Harley Hill !!!!
This series of books are a must read. I had difficulties putting it down as each scenario had an unpredictable outcome. Recommended for any reader young, old or middle aged to read this if you are looking for an interesting read that keeps you wanting to read on this is for you. I just wish there had been more stories in this set.
