Kidnapped

Rate this book
First Lizzy had learned of Mr. Darcy's hand in breaking Jane's heart, and then he had offered the most insulting marriage proposal in history. Could a day get worse? Only if she were to be threatened at sword-point, tied up, and whisked away by a rogue, with only the world's most arrogant man to watch over her. Luckily, that wasn't very likely to happen...

This is an excellent unpublished Pride and Prejudice variation that's like popcorn at an amusement park. You'll find action-packed adventure with winding plot twists that you'll never see coming.

Elizabeth and Darcy are thrown together through much of the book, since they are the kidnap victims. Colonel Fitzwilliam is pursuing their captors and, once again, finds himself odd man out with his attraction to a woman who is with another man - although this time it's NOT Elizabeth. You will feel sorry for Colonel Fitzwilliam's poor horse by the end of the story, considering how much he travels throughout the space of only a few days. Rosings figures heavily into the story, since everything is precipitated by gambling debts there.

I will say no more about the plot because spoilers will ruin the fun of reading. This is a wonderful mixture of romance and action. There are a LOT of new characters and very few Bennets (except Elizabeth, of course) in the meat of the story. If you read and enjoyed Jan Hahn's The Journey, I guarantee you'll love this. Even the epilogue, jumping ahead 8 years and tying up loose ends, truly satisfies.

The author (Babsy1221 on the fanfiction website) shows a great sense of timing and humor, and she has impressive writing chops. I particularly enjoy that every one of these 16 chapters opens with a Disclaimer comparing herself with Jane Austen in multiple variations of "I am not Jane Austen." My favorite was: "I did not write Pride and Prejudice. If I had, it would have been much less fun, mostly because I would have killed off George Wickham in the first thirty pages."

I read this story a while ago but then skimmed through it today when I learned that Debbie was reading it as I knew that Goodreads would have a link for posting a review.

This story begins in the midst of Darcy’s disastrous proposal to Elizabeth at the Hunsford Parsonage. As she is giving him all the reasons she has turned him down & he asks her to allow him to give her a letter on the morrow explaining all, the house is entered by several thieves. They hold the couple hostage while ransacking the place and taking any item of value. The maid, Molly, is called upon to disclose why there is anyone at home and she relates how Elizabeth claimed to be sick and Darcy showed up unexpectedly. There is some maneuvering and/or bargaining back and forth as to whether one or both Darcy & Elizabeth are going to be "kidnapped". (You may or may not consider parts after this as SPOILERS but it is only the first part of the entire tale...thus, you decide if you want to read on.)

So being that Darcy has not been allowed to deliver into Elizabeth’s hands his letter explaining all, we now read of how little by little he is able to present and discuss those points in her refusal with her. Their flight takes them to several inns and one night under the stars. Darcy has claimed that he is her lover, so when in an inn they are placed together in a room. Elizabeth even goes so far as to demand he sleep beside her “one cold and windy night” for shared warmth. Plus due to her bodily complaints about riding a horse even when dressed as a lad, she is put up behind Darcy to continue on. During the last leg of their journey into Dover, Elizabeth finds a way of stealing a dagger.

Arriving in Dover and boarding a ship they know that if the ship departs for France, any chance of their rescue or escape has ended.

So, dear readers, we read of changing feelings and understandings between Darcy and Lizzy, as in canon BUT under much different circumstances. As Darcy makes plans for escape and determining for what reason this is being carried out, Elizabeth must temper her anger and learn to trust him.
But back in Kent, Colonel Fitzwilliam has been consulting with Mrs. Collins and subsequently with Anne and Lady Catherine. You may be surprised…NO, you will be surprised to learn how, who, why, how much, etc. all of the dots are connected to the original event. And you will feel downhearted as a man dear to us finds his heart straining where it cannot go.

And this tale is nowhere near the end when we have arrived in Dover: people to entangle in plots and plans and places to run, to hide and from which to escape. Bingley is called upon, and Mr. Bennet has an opinion on all that has gone on. The author even gives us a sweet epilogue so as to satisfy a dangling matter of the heart. Yes, you will find this an enchanting tale.

“Kidnapping causes a long-term rupture in the psyche of those kidnapped and of those who wait for their return. It doesn’t end.” –Uzodinma Iweala

Rating: This was clean and so good. OMG!!

This was 16 chapters of pure angst and such an exciting adventure. The page-time between D&E was so good. And the unfolding story was so convoluted that it was hard to keep up with the villains, the treachery and the pure selfishness of some of the characters. Wow!

I absolutely loved our dear Colonel… and his horse. He is always good in a story. This time he was so cool. He had to wait for his HEA but it was well worth it. His honor was what made him so amazing. I just loved him.

I also liked when Bingley was brought into the story. We learned that he possessed a few skills that were useful when storming the castle to rescue the princess. Way to go Bingley.

The plot is super entertaining and the story is delicious, full of conversation between D&E.
My only complaint is about the epilogue. It was unnecessary and kinda odd to see the main focus switching to the other couple (but I'm not too fond of second characters anyway).

Unputdownable!
Nerve-wracking and thrilling story, intersped with humour and romance.
Very well written with plenty of page-time with ODC.

The latter part of the Hunsford proposal, was rudely interrupted by kidnappers...
Forced together by circumstances, ODC must overcome their pride and prejudice, in cramped and terrifying conditions, to save each other.
The colonel was swiftly on their tale and rode night and day to rescue his cousin and Miss Bennet, I adored this rendition of the colonel.
There was a lot going on at Rosings though and the colonel, with the aid of Mrs Collins, discovered some dire news in connection with the great house.

I heartily enjoyed this book. Recommend!

Dear reader,

This is a beautiful story centred on a most entertaining premise of a kidnapping occurring shortly after a disastrous proposal scene in Mr Collins' front room....and the victims of said kidnapping,I hear you ask??? ....none other than Darcy and Lizzy!

This is truly a most compelling story as we are privy to the gradual shift in emotions on Elizabeth's part,as she slowly realises her grievous error in judgement of this man.

We are also witness to such a strong, resilient, endearing Darcy-one who is unwilling to leave Elizabeth's side and is willing to do anything to protect her.

I enjoyed many facets of this book-but I loved the many opportunities afforded to ODC to simply talk- to explain their opinions of the other,to realise that these opinions were perhaps not always grounded in truth and to allow themselves to gain a quite new, different and more positive perspective on the other. The chat they shared while riding the horse was one such beautifully scripted moment that is still in my mind.......

It would be remiss of me not to mention the parallel thread in this story, based mainly on a love triangle that,I must admit, intrigued me and at times tore at my heartstrings.

He loves her,is six months too late as she has married another for purely practical reasons that,at the time made perfect sense to her....now he has no choice but to accept her as a married woman, living with a husband that in the eyes of many, she certainly does not deserve.

She had made vows that she is unwilling to break,so must contend herself with such a future, married to a man that knows nothing of the brave, intelligent and passionate woman that he lives with.

This book is beautifully crafted, its words chosen with love and care to permit us to understand the thoughts and dreams of its beloved characters,to see for ourselves their torment and to finally witness the happy resolution of the multiple difficulties ever present in this magical tale.

What more can I say about this story than to urge you to read it?I trust you will love it as I did!

Absolutely charming!
A story of two loves in the making, which develop incongruously during a kidnapping. This author takes the P&P characters with all their characteristics and writes them in to a delightful action story.
Disappointed hopes, intrigues, debts and misunderstandings motivate the story, but bravery, compassion and wit lead the reader to an incredibly satisfying ending.

ps-her disclaimers are almost as fun as the story itself!

In this Pride & Prejudice variation, Elizabeth is kidnapped during Darcy's awful proposal. Since he can not bear the thought of her in danger, he asks to be taken too. They must learn to trust each other as only people in dangerous circumstances can do. They get help from their usual support system in some very unique ways and spend time trying to stay hidden. In the end, their need to be together and safe brings them to their happily ever after.

As a side note, the author's notes at the beginning of each chapter were my favorite part.

I absolutely loved this book, it was awesome and should be published. It kept me on my toes the whole time. Darcy goes to Hunsford Parsonage to propose to Elizabeth which he does and she rejects him but right after they are both kidnapped for ransom because of the gambling habits of what we believe is Lady Catherine and Mr. Collins. It’s basically a back-and-forth of Elizabeth and Darcy’s situation and colonel Fitzwillam trying to locate them and find out what caused their kidnapping. I could not put this book down it was wonderfully written and the plot and banter surrounding Elizabeth and Darcy as they come to know and depend on each other were pure enjoyable foreplay. I honestly was let down when everything was finally resolved because it meant it was over. The only thing I felt was a little strange was what came to be the reason that Elizabeth was taken with Darcy. The original reason seemed more plausible. Still five stars all around.

I always enjoy stories that have Elizabeth and Darcy facing hazard and adversity together.
This is a brilliant example. Kidnapped minutes after the Hunsford proposal, their proximity forces them re-examine their misunderstandings in order to stay safe and achieve freedom.
Lovely secondary story of Colonel Fitzwilliam.

3.5 stars.

I enjoyed this fanfiction a lot. It is interesting and quite thrilling at some points. But some parts of the book annoyed me a lot, so I couldn't rate it any higher.
Specifically, the repercussions of abducting an influential gentleman and a gentlewoman.

But aside from these annoying aspects, it is a great fanfiction. I recommend it to P&P fanfiction fans.

Such a good read - much better than much of the published material in the genre. The writing is tight without errors.

I am not usually a fan of kidnap plots but this i a wonderful exception. The characters are authentic and likeable, even some of the kidnappers. The development of the romance between Elizabeth and Darcy is well done and the side-pot involving the Colonel is beautiful.

Liked the darcy / Elizabeth sections. But couldn't enjoy the Colonet Fitzwilliam / Charlotte chapters. Its not exactly the pairing I'm against, but in here, they feel way too ooc for my taste.

Loved! Please write more. I will be reading Overheard now. I need to find out if this author has written more than these two stories? If Babsy1221 reads this review, please consider releasing this as a hardcopy so I can treasure it always.
