The illustrations by Simon Stern are beautiful, eccentric, and a little bit creepy -- exactly right for this story. And the story itself has everything: a greedy rich man, a poor boy, a mountain of gold, a cursed ferryman, a mysterious old woman, a castle, a dragon, and even St. Nicholas, in the guise of a beggar. It's a real shame the story is no longer in print.
