A NATION UNDER SIEGE...It’s been more than four years since the annexation of Crimea and UN has decided to take covert military action to loosen the stranglehold of the Russian invaders. The targets are a strategic bridge and underwater pipelines which supply the occupied peninsula with natural gas, electrical power, and telecommunications from mainland Russia. If these critical lifelines can be severed, Ukrainian resistance fighters might have a chance at reclaiming independence. To make this possible, former U.S. naval officer Jake Slate and international arms dealer Pierre Renard must wage a clandestine war against the Russian navy. Their enemies are aided by weaponized dolphins, who know the ocean environment far better than any human possibly can.If this is not a suicide mission, it’s pretty damned close...
After a promising start about a sci fi inspired privately owned fleet of submarines quickly bogged down into an almost unreadable mess of improbable incidents. Sorry I wasted my time with it.
Monteith's books have that connection to reality that many fiction books lack. His submarine service gives the authenticity that provides fuel for the read. This book is another mercenary adventure set in the current events of the Ukraine.
The regular players are back, Jake, Renard and Cahill. The mission is to disrupt the Russian take over of Crimea. The mission goes off the rails with some unanticipated actions by the Russians. The good guys must respond with some unanticipated behavior of their own.
Monteith notes a level of professionalism and respect between submariners that smacks of honor and regard. One hopes the real people who do this for a living have that same regard.
Jake still wrestles with his personal demons and even brings a Priest on the sub for moral guidance. It demonstrates that Priests can honor their calling and still be warriors. A concept that needs some pondering.
I recommend the book.

John Monteith scores again with his eighth book in the Rogue Submarine series. Jake Slate and his mercenary crew of submarine warriors are back, this time up against the Russian Navy. But with Slate more in control of his anger, will he have the natural aggression to do what needs to be done to survive?
Three things always happen when I read one of John Monteith's books. I enjoy it, I learn something about submarines I didn't know, and I laugh about some one liner that either Jake or Pierre quips during the story. Rogue Hunter was no different, and Monteith delivered another solid, interesting entertaining story.
Because the heroes are mercenaries, there can be plenty of technology without the occasionally stifling rules of engagement that slow down other similar techno-thrillers. The result is a fast-moving, thoroughly entertaining story that is technically up to speed with the latest developments in underwater warfare. I'm looking forward to the next one...
