Johannes Meintjes is an excellent articulate historian and a great storyteller. My knowledge of South African was patchy at best. This book has gone some way towards repairing that gap. The book also avoids “racial and political bias” (to quote William Plomer) and gives a clear account of the Voortrekkers who left the Cape in the nineteenth century to free themselves from British rule. Their indomitable courage and their suffering as they went in search of their promised land were quite incredible. And Meintjes does not hold back in describing these colourful events in the best storytelling tradition. I have read one other of his books, I have collected quite a few others and I am looking forward to reading them.
