Despite the crazy shenanigans happening in this book, I have to give it the full glowing stars.
Things that I loved:
➵ Deanne and Wade. They were oh so good and they were awesome lead characters!
➵ Little Bear, the half mixed Indian child that they adopt. I fell in love with their little family by the end. Beth, their daughter and then this guy!
➵ Shantale, a underrated supporting character. She was intelligent and well spoken. She was also really smart and she was one of the characters that carried the story. She is Deanne’s half sister, as her father had an affair with one of his slaves.
➤ Thoughts: Deanne and Wade are both amazing lead characters. They are memorable and very lovable. I liked both of them equally, and we can see how their love is kept strong throughout the whole book.
I loved Deanne Brooks. Most of her family is dead, and her stepmother hates her (more on that crazy train wreck of a character later), and she is left in charge to take care of Brookes Manor. Deanne is beautiful, but she is also a badass. I remember one instant in the book where she uses a rifle to defend herself. She is brave, smart, and caring. Despite so much pain and loss, she is so strong. She is one of my favorite characters I will remember.
Wade Jordan is no different. He is very steamy, but more than that, he is an honest and loving man. He cares deeply for Deanne, and knows he always will. Wade is really amazing. He cares for his family, like his daughter and he’s just funny. Really, I can’t tell you how much I loved both Wade and Deanne.
➤ Plot: The story is set during 1864-1865, and takes place in Alabama during the final months of the Civil War all the way to the end. Wade spies on Deanne and stops the gun shipment for his mission, the real reason why he was sent to Brooke’s manor. After Wade tells her he is a Yankee, Deanne is heartbroken and upset at Wade. They come to navigate their feelings for one another. Eventually the war ends, and Deanne gives birth to a child. She moves out to the West with Wade, because he is stationed at Fort Phil Kearney in Wyoming. Here, all types of crazy things happen: Deanne gets kidnapped by Indians, adopts an Indian child, Deanne’s dead brother happens to be alive, and well I said it was wild. Eventually though, Deannne and Wade find their happily ever after and stay back at the fort, with their children.
➤ Upsides: Wade and Deanne are both dynamic and interesting lead characters. Their relationship is strong and their love is developed naturally. Nice historical background and nicely written sub plots. There are other supporting characters who are written well.
➤ Downsides: Deanne’s crazy stepmother Lanesa who had an affair with the over seer, never really cared for Deanne, and is extremely racist (does not like slaves and thinks of Indians as savages) wasn’t really someone I liked. This isn’t something bad about the story, but something I didn’t enjoy. Her presence just made me want to slap her silly and throw her whiny ass off the pages. She was such an annoying character. Other than that, the book was great.
➤ Violence: Moderate and slightly graphic. A white family is killed in a raid and it is revealed their daughter was raped as well. A group of Yankee soldiers and slaves get lynched and hung. A character later describes in brief detail that the slaves were tortured badly before being lynched. Deanne’s overseer shoots and kills two slaves, and proceeds to attack her as well. Some characters are shot and injured. Indians are mentioned killing white settlers and it is stated that a white family was killed by Indians from another character.
➤ Bottom line: A wild and emotional ride. I loved the supporting characters as well as the main characters, and overall, I would definitely recommend this. A nice book and one that I enjoyed.
