I Can't Get No Satisfaction

Georgie Baldt is stuck in a rut. He used to be a go-getter, but then the real world hit after college, and being magna cum laude with a major in Liberal Arts meant squat next to student loans and paying the bills. In the middle of all the mind-numbing minutia of working two dead-end jobs, Georgie just wants to find that spark again, and maybe someone to love, too.

In fact, Georgie's never forgotten the stranger who took his virginity one night years ago in the back alley of a bar when he was drunk and begging for it. Loudly. The man had been kind, and afterward, Georgie had run away in shame. So what are the odds that the same man from back then is now Georgie’s new boss at the trendy grocery store where he works mornings?

Ry Archibald, newly minted produce manager is a fine figure of a man and remembers Georgie. However, they get off on the wrong foot mainly because of a coworker and his slutty ways. Harsh words are exchanged and Georgie retreats into his shell. Let the pretty people have their fun, is Georgie’s way of thinking. Who was he kidding, anyway? No one would look at him twice. But Ry is looking.

And when Georgie hands in his two weeks’ notice, Ry pulls out all the stops so they can finally become friends. Maybe more.

A really sweet story. I was glad Georgie found Ry. Would have loved it if it was longer, but that's the way it goes: a story is as long as it's meant to be.

Georgie is a shy Liberal Arts graduate who’s stuck at some low level jobs while he worries about paying student loans and keeping his head above water. He’s had a rough past, including gay-bashing and bullying, and all he wants is a peaceful life. And maybe someone to love. On his 22nd birthday he tries to climb out of his comfort zone, begging a stranger to take his virginity. Which the stranger does in an alley, kind and gentle and concerned when Georgie breaks down in tears afterwards. Ashamed, Georgie takes off.
Working his job at the gourmet grocer, he is friends with Buzz, a happily married man with three children, and things are pretty static. Until the new produce manager arrives and you bet, it’s the same kind, gentle stranger, Randy. Randy brings up the past and they decide they can work together without it being awkward.
But awkward it is. While Randy may have been kind and gentle in the past, he’s sort of an ass now. While he’s making time with Trent, a slutty member of customer service, he is also being incredibly disrespectful and rude to Georgie, who runs into a an old friend at the story. Georgie fights back for once. “Even if it means belittling and insulting your underlings?”
The good part is, it sets in motion some life changes for Georgie. They avoid each other at work and Georgie is happy with his new decisions. I admit, I found Ry to be two-faced. Trent “…offered it up and I took it a few times. He’s a hot lay and it’s a free country.” Okay, sure. But Georgie merely talking to his old college roommate gets him called out?
This is a short story, 71 pages on my iPad, and I liked Georgie immensely. I stayed a little ambivalent about Ry, he just didn't convince me he was that same kind, gentle guy. It’s a cute story for in between longer, heavier books.
