Adam Joshua's Valentine's Day is extremely complicated, and it doesn't help matters to know his best friend Nelson and his dog George are both in love.

Terrible. Second graders should not be celebrating Valentine's Day like this at all. Way too much class time is given to encourage the girls to chase the boys. One boy actually gets ambushed with a kiss, which is too close to harassments to be condoned. The 'secret friend' add-on activity isn't any better, really. There are ways to celebrate the holiday that will actually help the kids learn stuff that is relevant to how they can have healthy relationships.
Also the bit about George and Lucy. Bad enough they're just roaming dogs, all too likely to scare tots and go feral, but the hint is that they are in love... which means puppies, which means more animals likely to go to a shelter and not get adopted....
And why was Martha the only one who got the milk money from the other kids? And why was she allowed to do so in the first place? As a parent, I want milk money to go to milk. If my kid gets a markered 'tattoo' I want it to be drawn by him or herself.
