Protecting the Clan

Rate this book
Two weeks have passed since Avery joined their clan, and Oren is glad to see how much the little ice dragon has grown. He’s no longer afraid of everything, but he wears his worry and uncertainty around him like a constant cloak, something Oren wishes he could help with. They’re a family, and being together is important. It strengthens their bond and brings them comfort. Avery being only with Donovan is unheard of in their world and Oren hopes that the rift their love has caused between them all will be temporary.

The ice dragons have found Avery, and now they want him back. When they attack, Oren and Avery are taken, and their connection grows in their captivity. Oren will risk everything to keep his family safe, and that includes himself. He’ll die before he ever lets the ice dragons get their hands on Avery again.

Caitlin was fortunate growing up to be surrounded by family and teachers that encouraged her love of reading. She has always been a voracious reader and that love of the written word easily morphed into a passion for writing. If she isn't writing, she can usually be found studying as she works toward her counseling degree. She comes from a military family and the men and women of the armed forces are close to her heart. She also enjoys gardening and horseback riding in the Colorado Rockies where she calls home with her wonderful fiance and their dog. Her belief that there is no one true path to happily ever after runs deeply through all of her stories.

We met Avery when he was rescued by the Earth Dragon clan. He’d been horribly abused in his old clan and he found a new way of seeing himself and his role in the clan through his relationship with Donovan, the unofficial head of the new clan.

In the earth clan the norm is for everyone to share one another’s affections, not to single out as couples as Donovan and Avery have done. When Avery is threatened by his old ice clan, Oren comes to his rescue and the two become closer.

**

I have to admit that my “traditionalist” sensibilities were disappointed by this story. I was sad to see Avery and Donovan’s relationship change in this way. The author did a good job explaining why the clan is better served by having all the members “share” one another, but I didn’t like it. I really wanted Oren to find his own love and Avery to stay with Donovan.

In the end I like the world the author has created and I will stick with the series just to follow the characters, but I don’t love it as much as I used to.

When the ice dragons come to take Avery back, Oren will do anything to protect him.

Summary:
Avery's life before joining Donovan's clan was one of abuse, but physical and sexual. Now he sees the other dragon's living as a family sharing themselves freely with each other. He is slowly coming out of his shell, but it isn't until the ice dragons return for him that he understands how to finally stand up for what he believes in. It was wonderful how the other members of the clan did everything they could to help Avery to feel safe and protected, even if it meant putting their own life on the line, just like Oren did. While very interesting, this book didn't give the reader much insight into the characters lives or much depth in the plot. It would be a stronger story if both were employed allowing the reader more into the lives and conflicts that effected their lives.
