This was hard to rate because I absolutely loved the first 75% of this book, but the last 25% were sorely lacking and also felt rushed. It was about 2.5 stars. First of all, I loved the concept of Draco and some other Death Eaters being wiped of their wizarding life and placed in the muggle world as a sort of punishment/new start to life. I also loved the banter between Draco and Hermione, as well as their chemistry. The conflicts of her being his "social worker" but falling for him anyways, and his memory-altered mind having issues was done well.
Now, we are going to get into spoilers here, but here is where I had issues.
1.) Draco is remembering parts of being a wizard and thinks he's going insane, and it gets so bad that he hurts himself. By this point, he and Hermione have started a relationship (though they haven't labeled it) so she's desperately trying to help repair his mind. She ends up reversing the memory charm and giving his memories back. Understandably, he's upset and confused, trying to figure out who he is as a wizard and who he became as a muggle. But from that point to the moment he and Hermione reconcile and decide to be together, 8 MONTHS PASS. Not only 8 months, but it's basically just Hermione going through life in suspense- we don't get to see Draco and his thoughts as he tries to meld his two lives together and figure out his feelings. The whole book was dual POV up to this point but it's basically just Hermione there at the end, and we don't really get to delve into her emotions and thoughts much either. They do have a few run ins/meet ups, but they lead nowhere and seemed pointless to me.
2.) Hermione, Harry, and Ron's friendship didn't feel like it got fully explored, especially considering the messiness that is Hermione and Ron's break up. It's mentioned enough that Hermione isn't as well received at the Burrow by Molly because she broke up with Ron, and even Ginny doesn't involve her in her wedding planning either! In fact, Ron starts dating one of Ginny's teammates, Geri, and this girl does wedding planning stuff with her instead. Hermione feels left out/pushed out and that doesn't get confronted. Also, sometimes it seemed like Ron was still hung up on her and that would have been interesting to go into, but it's only teased at and then left alone. Hermione only really had a good friendship with Harry, and I think her friend group didn't actually feel like friends.
3.) Finally, the whole premise of the story felt undermined by the conflict at the end. Apparently, there was a council that didn't know what to do with Draco, Narcissa, Blaine, and Pansy- they thought Azkaban was inhumane and didn't want to resort to killing them. So, they come up with the idea to erase their memories of being a wizard and placing them in the muggle world so they're no longer a threat. And yet, when Shacklebolt is told that Hermione gave Draco his memories back, he basically scolds and transfers her to a different department and gives Draco a job at the Ministry. Like, what?! I thought Draco was so dangerous they were considering killing him and the others before deciding on the memory charm, and yet when he gets his memories back it's no big deal? All is forgiven? And not only that, he wants to give his mom her memories back too, and they agree to it. I couldn't wrap my head around that, it didn't support the premise of this whole thing.
So, sadly, this one didn't work for me.
