এই বইটার সঙ্গে আমার সম্পর্ক সুগভীর, মায়ের সাথে সদ্যপ্রসূত সন্তানের শেষ নাড়ীবন্ধনটুকুর মতো। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় আমাকে ছাড়ি ছাড়ি করেও ছাড়ছিলোনা, তার জন্যে দায়ী এবই। অবশেষে অসম্ভব তিতীক্ষা , ধৈর্য ও না-বুঝে মুখস্ত করে পড়ার অগ্নিপরীক্ষা দিয়ে এই মারণ-নাড়ীবন্ধন থেকে মুক্তি পাই।মোট দুইটা সাবজেক্ট ছিল এটার ওপর পুরো চার বছরের কোর্সে,অর্থাৎ দুই সেমিস্টার এবইয়ের পাশবিক অত্যাচার সহ করতে হয়েছে।
প্রথমে যে নীতিবাক্যটি দিলাম সেটি একটা অধ্যায় এর শুরুতে লেখা,এরকম অজস্র উদ্বুদ্ধকারী বক্তব্য দিয়ে সাজানো প্রতিটি অধ্যায়। সাদিকু সাহেব বইটি লেখার পর নিশ্চিতভাবেই জানতেন,এবই পাঠে শিক্ষার্থীদের একটু পরপর তুমুল ইন্সপাইরেশনের দরকার হবে! প্রতি অধ্যায় এর শুরুতে যা লেখা,বাংলা করলে দাঁড়ায়, পূর্বের অধ্যায়ের সকল তত্ত্ব ও গাণিতিক সমস্যা আত্মস্থ করে এবার আমরা এই অধ্যায়ে পা দিচ্ছি! (আরে আগের অধ্যায় বেশি কঠিন লাগে বলেই তো এটা ট্রাই করতে এলাম!)
বইয়ের টপিক কী? একটা ধারণা দেয়া যাক। একটা টাংস্টেন পিনে অল্টারনেটিং কারেন্ট প্রবাহিত করালে এর মাথায় যে তড়িচ্চুম্বকীয় তরঙ্গ উৎপন্ন হয়, সেটা শূন্য, বায়ুমাধ্যম, কাঠ, পানি ইত্যাদিতে আপতিত হয়ে কী আকার ধারণ করে সেটার সমীকরণ বের কর; এই টাইপ।
তড়িৎকৌশলের সবগুলো কোর্সের মধ্যে সবচে' তত্ত্বীয়, দুর্বোধ্য বিষয় বোধহয় এটাই (বিভিন্ন ব্লগ ফোরামেও দেখেছি বেশিরভাগ এটাকেই বলে সবাই)। এখানে কোনকিছুই চোখে দেখা বা অনুভব করা যায়না ,পুরোটাই গাণিতিক ধারণাময়। দুই কোর্সেই দু'বার করে বসতে হয়েছে, দুটোতেই D পেয়ে উত্তীর্ণ হবার গৌরব অর্জন করি! এই ক্ষোভ থেকে দিলাম এক তারা। :D

This book is excellent at explaining the theoretical workings of the electromagnetic phenomena, its explanation of how and why the math comes together the way it does is very clear, well-paced, and comprehensive, but that focus on math might also be its downfall. It starts with 3 chapters teaching the mathematics needed later instead of incorporating it where needed in the text, which might be preferred by some instructors, but I don't really like that.
As an engineering student in 2012, I don't think focusing on mathematical analysis and manual problem solving techniques is the best idea, in practice we rarely need to resort to that.

If you're more interested in applications and real-life implications, I'd recommend Engineering Electromagnetics over this one.

This was my E&M university text from two decades ago, but I picked it up again to learn about EM waves (the back half of this book) as we didn’t cover that in much detail back then. I reread the whole thing – the first part working up to Maxwell’s equations is good in laying out the mathematical tools and helping you work through the calculations to solve straightforward problems, but I didn’t feel it was very strong in giving you a physical understanding of E&M phenomena (I think Purcell’s textbook is stronger in this area). The second half on EM waves (transmission lines, waveguides, antennas) was an introduction to what I can see is quite a challenging subject.

While I own the 2nd edition of this book (dated 1994), I picked up a newer copy from the library to see if the content was any different, but the text is literally word-for-word the same as my version from two decades ago. I’m sure they probably changed a few numbers in some of the problems to ensure students have to buy the expensive new edition…

1 star because it made me cry and have an existential crisis a lot of times during the semester.
honestly speaking though, there are a lot of leaps in derivations and some examples which makes it pretty confusing
