The Memoir MY FIRST NOVEL: ‘THE TRAIL OF THE SERPENT’
Mary Elizabeth Braddon was a British Victorian era popular novelist. She was an extremely prolific writer, producing some 75 novels with very inventive plots. The most famous one is her first novel, Lady Audley's Secret (1862), which won her recognition and fortune as well. The novel has been in print ever since, and has been dramatised and filmed several times.
Braddon also founded Belgravia Magazine (1866), which presented readers with serialized sensation novels, poems, travel narratives, and biographies, as well as essays on fashion, history, science. She also edited Temple Bar Magazine. Braddon's legacy is tied to the Sensation Fiction of the 1860s.
It will take me awhile to read through this collection and for some reason my Kindle says I am finished when in actuality I am certainly not but will give a brief review this far, not of her stories because those will be located under their title elsewhere, this edition has some typos which I sent through my Kindle. What I love is the vast amount stories are here with great navigation. Since I first read Mary Elizabeth Braddon years ago, I feel in love with her style of romance, suspense and surprise. I know whenever I pick her up, I will get into the story and wonder what will be the final verdict because things sometimes are not what they seem.
I had nver heard of Elizabeth Branddon but have this book on a list of recommended works to read. The first story I tackled was Lady Audley's Secret and it did not fail to hook me into reading more and more of Braddon's tales. The characters come alive in this saga of a couple who marry but because the new bride is not of the appropriate station the husband's father cuts off his relationship which causes the husband ot leave his wife to seek is fortune in Australia. The wife wants nothing to do with poverty and finds a way to win the heart of another rich man and change he name and identity to do so. The husband returns and the tales goes on in way that make you want to stay up and keep reading.
Quick tip: Are you taking part in the annual Good Reads reading challenge? Then may I suggest, whilst reading this (and also marking it as ‘currently reading’) you also search for and set each individual novel in this collection as ‘currently reading’. There are 53 novels enclosed, and without doing this you’ll not be representing your true book count and all your reading dedication!
I’m only 60 pages in, and it’s making for pleasant reading so far.
Also, a bit of a weird coincidence- I just found out that I started reading this on the author’s date of death, 110 years ago (yesterday) :)
