Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes #5

Shelter for Elizabeth

Rate this book
Elizabeth Parkins lived through a nightmare come true—getting kidnapped by a serial killer. Seeking a fresh start, she moves to Texas, but escaping her demons proves impossible when she’s too terrified to leave her own apartment. A small, accidental fire sparks a coping method she’d never expected, and brings an amazing man to her door.

Firefighter Cade “Sledge” Turner’s idyllic life ended the day his sister was kidnapped. Now he knows firsthand that tragedy can befall anyone, at any time. Meeting Elizabeth on the job was a gift. Cade can envision spending his life with this woman. He understands what she’s been through, is willing to help her heal…though even Cade is unaware of Beth’s new secret obsession.

As Beth takes steps to help herself heal, and Cade attempts to earn her trust and prove his own, they’re both about to be tested—in a way that could see everything they’ve worked for go up in flames.

* Shelter for Elizabeth is the 5th book in the Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings.

I love how 'real' Cade is. No man is perfect. No human is perfect. I enjoyed his slips during the stressful conversations with Beth. It is really hard to have a normal conversation with someone who is struggling mentally. Sometimes, something most people would take very easily gets twisted in the head of someone who is struggling. I appreciated Susan's understanding that a hurting mind can be a minefield that no one can navigate without setting at least a few bombs off. Cade truly loves Beth and wants her to be as okay as possible, but it was a struggle to communicate with her. This book was true to life in a very touching and well thought out way.

I enjoyed seeing characters from Seal of Protection. I loved the relationship that Tex and Beth were forming. I hope to see some more of them in future books. Tex has always been a huge favorite of mine and its nice to have him drop by.

All in all, this book was amazing. Not only was the romance between Cade and Beth extremely touching, but the author's treatment of mental anxiety issues was very honest. I cannot wait to share this book with my friends. It’s a great read for anyone, but I'm especially excited to share such an amazing heroine with my friends with anxiety issues.

I adore this author. Susan Stoker gives you alpha. She gives you wonderful h's that you can't help but root for. She gives you an actual story outside of the romance that makes the couple stronger in the end. This story was even a little steamier which i loved.I adored Cade and Beth. Beth had some major issues because of a horrible situation we read about in Saving Summer. She uproots and moves to San Antonio where she is striving to cope with agoraphobia. She accidentally starts a fire and has to call 911, that's where Cade comes in. Cade was compassionate, sweet and adored Beth. Some drama unfolds and things go haywire but this couple worked hard! My only complaint is there is no epilogue. I'm not ok with that. (there is an epilogue about Hayden and a lead up to her story). I want HEA and I want to see what happens in the future with them. Yes they get mentioned in other stories but I want more. Do they end up married? do they have babies? does she ever get over her fears? it left me guessing.

Shelter for Elizabeth was a satisfying read. Who doesn’t like a sexy firefighter hero! Just look at that cover. Yummy!

Ok, So as I mentioned in my previous review for Justice for Corrie I’ve had Ms. Stoker on my blog and ever time I would tell myself I’m going to try her books. Just reading the blurbs and looking at the covers gets me intrigued in what she’s written. For those that don’t know me CR is not my normal go to genre, but I do like to give it a try now and then.

Here we have Beth who struggles with agoraphobia. We see her struggles on dealing with the aftermath of her kidnapping and everything that happened during that time. Just seeing her dealing with what happened and then add on her agoraphobia which makes it impossible for her to leave the house, was heart breaking. But, she’s not alone.

Writing about a disability of any type is hard and Ms. Stoker does a wonderful job portraying these different disabilities that several people deal with on a daily basses. It makes her characters that much more believable.

I loved Penelope she was an amazing friend to Elizabeth. It was great to see her have a strong friendship with Penelope and then through Penelope meet Cade and then watch as their relationship grows. Cade is so patient and caring. He doesn’t give up or put pressure on her. He sees how strong she is and helps her find ways to deal. He’s their for the long haul.

Shelter for Elizabeth deals with overcoming fears, becoming stronger, and not letting the monsters win.

Over all I had a delightful time reading. It had it’s ups and downs, it’s sweet and tender moments, and it’s corny spots as well.

Note: Can be read as a stand alone. Books in this series do not have to be read in order.

Rated: 3 Stars

Okay this book really got to me. I suffered from Agoraphobia from the time I was 18 until I was 40 and this was realistic, perhaps too realistic for me. It was hard to read but I am glad I did. One thing I liked is that she wasn't quickly cured. She still wasn't cured at the end of this story or in the next story. I wasn't cured until I started taking the drug Paxil. It took almost a year after that before I could really feel it help. But I had a great support system through it. My family really tried to help and having them in the car with me or go places with me really made it easier. I love this story and while it triggered some bad memories it still made me realize how far I have come.

As for the story itself, I loved and hated Beth. Just like I did myself when I had issues with it. She got hers after being kidnapped, violently raped and tortured. It happened in a book in the seal series and I just had to find out how she handled it. Totally PTSD all the way. I loved the hero and his patience and dedication, well he did fail terribly 70% into the book and I hated him for that. She was trying to cope with it and she did use a very dangerous method to do it. I was concerned but this guy just went off the deep end. I loved how she handled it too. I am not going to spoil that part.

She met him after a fire in her apartment and he quickly became attracted to her. Even knowing about the agoraphobia, he still pursued her. It didnt stop him. He was great. Love the whole gang and I really like the authors writing stule, well except for the sex scenes. It's just not romantic to me and she seems fixated on the whole 'tasting' experience and it just turned me off. I love the rest of the book though and it is very well researched. I can't get enough of her books

Read for Smutathon round 5- 2020 challenge!

Square- New to You Author

This is the fifth book in the B of H series, however, I hadn't read the others before diving into this one. One of my weaknesses is a firefighter romance. I know lots of readers love these kinds of relationship tales and Shelter For Elizabeth was at times an interesting read. There is a representation for Agoraphobia as the main character Beth went through some horrific traumas, which was a little triggering at moments. After some burnt food, her paths cross with Cade, who generally wants to get to know her better. However, he doesn't realise the full struggles that Beth has been through until some more scary events happen. A little slow with the pacing and some plot twists particularly one at the very end which I didn't see coming or wasn't sure how it would tie into the main plotline. Overall- 3.5 stars!

This new release from Susan Stoker is, like her previous books in this series, a wonderful, well written story. Cade and Beth are well developed characters that instantly captivate the readers interest. Avid readers of Ms. Stoker will know Beth from her SEAL of Protection series, "Protecting Summer". I was glad to see this book, since I have wondered what happened to Elizabeth after her kidnapping and torture in that book. All we knew then was she was rescued and turned over for medical treatment. It is good to get the story of how she has survived and is coping with the issues left her due to that incident. I love how Ms. Stoker pairs her heroines with compassionate and understanding men who help them reach their potential. Cade and Beth have their demons work through, and watching them do that is emotional and heartwarming. This is an excellent read and one I enthusiastically recommend. You have the extra bonus of seeing Penelope from "Protecting the Future" (she's Cade's sister), Sam and Summer from "Protecting Summer" and the infamous Tex who is everyone's hero! On a scale of one to ten, this one is definitely a 10+! I need to say that I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review which I was glad to give.

What a truly inspiring read!!

We met Elizabeth Parkins enduring the worst moment in her life in Protecting Summer(Seal Of Protection#4).. This book is dealing with the aftermath of it..

Elizabeth, wow I'm in awe of how amazing she was, Yes she was dealing with the aftermath of the Kidnapping, She is struggling in some aspects, but what makes her truly amazing is how she deals with everything else.. She meets Cade, through her friend Penelope, who is Cade's sister.

Cade is so patient and so caring, He doesn't care that Elizabeth is dealing with her nightmare, He sees what's on the inside and is in for the long haul..

This is a book of overcoming our fears and becoming stronger.. It's about not letting the monsters win and take back control of our lives, in dealing with things in our own way.

I loved Penelope, she was an amazing friend to Elizabeth, She helped her deal the best way possible.

I love this series so much, It's one of my go to re-read series.

I recommend this book to everyone.

3.5 stars. This was a pretty good book! This was Cade and Beth's story. Beth is an agoraphobic computer hacker. After being kidnapped by a serial killer, raped and tortured before being rescued, she never leaves her house. One day while cooking she accidentally catches her stove on fire and she meets Cade. Cade is a firefighter, and the brother of Beth's friend from group therapy. He is intrigued and feels an immediate connection to Beth. They become friends and gradually begin a relationship. Cade helps Beth start to get better with her agoraphobia and leave her house little by little. They get close and serious pretty quickly. But Beth finds from the accidental kitchen fire that fire helps with her agoraphobia. She feels in control of her anxiety and stress when she lights candles, which leads to more of a fixation on fire with lighting fires in the grill. She knows that her fire fixation is bad though and she tries to stop, knowing that it would hurt her relationship with Cade. It all comes to a head for Beth and she is forced to get help for herself so she could continue on to a future with Cade.

I liked Beth and Cade together. I definitely felt the connection between them. Beth was a unique character, with her agoraphobia, but still also smart, brave and strong. Cade was very sweet and I liked his patience with her. There is a separation though So I didn't like what caused the separation and it threw off the momentum of the book for me. But, if I pretend that didn't happen, I did really like the book. It was a very original story and the writing was really good. The characters had depth and I liked the side characters. This was the first book I've read by Susan Stoker and I will definitely read more from her and from this series.

"Shelter for Elizabeth” by Susan Stoker is book number five in the “Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes” series. This is Elizabeth “Beth” Parkins and Cade “Sledge” Turner’s story.

Beth survived from being kidnapped and tortured. She decides to move to Texas to get a fresh start and hopefully her fears will go away. Beth’s fears have not gone away. She suffers from Agoraphobia. Sometimes leaving her home or just thinking about leaving her home will set off a severe panic attack.

Cade is a firefighter and meets Beth when he is on a call to put out a kitchen fire in her home. There is just something about Beth that gets Cade’s attention. In spite of the excitement the fire caused there were sparks flying between Cade and Beth. Cade wants to get to know Beth and see where the relationship will go.

It surprised Beth when Cade showed interest in dating her. Beth is resistant due to suffering from Agoraphobia. Cade is loving, caring, and very understanding of her condition. He convinces Beth to give their relationship a try. After surviving the kidnapping, Beth never dreamed that she would experience love like theirs. But Beth has secrets that she has kept from Cade. Will these secrets destroy their chance at love?

Susan Stoker gets the reader’s attention right from the start and keeps it throughout. You get an entertaining story, insight on what people go through that live with Agoraphobia, funny moments, and a hot and steamy romance. I enjoyed Beth and Cade’s story.

I received an ARC copy of this book for an honest review. FYI, contains mature content.

My heart broke for Elizabeth
We met Elizabeth in protecting summer when they were kidnapped by a psycho but Elizabeth was tortured and raped she was lucky enough to make it out alive. What she went through gave her nightmares so moving to Texas for a fresh start is what she needed. She is not afraid to go outside with fear of getting kidnapped again so she rather spends her time at home with her computer. She ended up trying to make one of her mother's recipes but caused a small fire and firefighters came instead. Cade "sledge" is there when she is scared to come outside because of her phobia he reassures her everything will be okay. Penepole comes in wondering what happen to her friend turns out pen and beth are close friends they met in therapy also Cade is her brother. Cade sees something on in her that makes him want to protect her. Together Cade slowly helps her recover while trying to get her to see that they belong in a relationship. While they have struggled together they fight them but the bumps ahead might be too much for them.
oh, how I love beth for trying to be normal trying to actual be in a relationship. She deserves to find love and have someone there for her fighting with her. The funniest part was beth signing up Cade for things he wasn't aware of as well as some underwear Lol.

Elizabeth Parkins has been through hell, and, although she carries the scars with her, she's doing what she can to reclaim her life. For Cade Turner, firefighter and white knight, coming to the rescue and saving lives is who he is. When he meets Beth, his protective instincts come out full force, and he'll do anything to make sure she feels safe.

At the heart of it, I like Susan Stoker's books, but, man, she puts her characters through the ringer! In SHELTER FOR ELIZABETH, Susan tackles the very real subject of phobias and coping mechanisms, and does so thoughtfully and gracefully.

One of the things that I like best about Susan's books is that we continue to get updates on characters that we've met before, and to see where they are now. I look forward to seeing more of Beth and Cade, Penelope, Hayden, and the rest of the crew in the near future, and give SHELTER FOR ELIZABETH 4 healing, romantic, and steamy stars.

While I’ve read many books by this author, this particular one wasn’t my cup of tea. Suffering from agoraphobia is difficult to live with and hard for those that love and want to help you. I’m sorry and while the writing was good, it wasn’t up to par with the story-line and characters. I appreciate the hero being patient to a fault but then there were pages and pages of sexual activity with a gal who can’t leave her apartment without someone to take care of her. I didn’t finish the story due to my impatience.

I really enjoyed this story it was nice to find out what happened to Beth after Her and Summer were rescued, she left where she was living and moved to another State. The trauma though has left her with some serious and lasting problems, even though she is in therapy she is stuck in her apartment. I really felt sorry for her, she is a fighter and feisty very strong willed so this is pulling her down and she is unhappy and a bit lonely. With help from Penelope and then Cade she is trying so hard to overcome and get past her issues. It gives insight into how this type of trauma affects lives, how they are forced to try and deal with day to day living. For the most part I loved Cade, his support and help were really doing Beth good. His friends as well were rallying around them. One coping mechanism though caused more problems, I did feel bad that he didn't handle things a bit better causing even more stress to both of them and their friends. I really like how Susan Stoker isn't afraid to tackle problems that could be classed as sensitive to some, she researches and deals with each in an informative way that I find actually helps us understand and maybe be a bit more understanding and helpful to people we come across in life suffering from them. Fantastic read.

What a great book. I have a particular fascination with characters who have any type of 'flaws.' Though we all have flaws, they're normal, Beth suffers from a debilitating case of agoraphobia. After suffering at the hands of a complete psycho, years later Beth has been forever changed. The poor thing can't even go out in public without a trusted friend holding their hand the whole time.

Crash, our hero, it literally smitten with Beth from the first moment. While there is an insta-love sort of feel, there relationship is not rushed and Crash helps bring Beth out of her shell. Beth is also a badass hacker so though she may rarely leave her home she can do some serious damage all with a keyboard. She also has a funny side such as sending people she knows random magazine subscriptions, signing them up for dating sites etc.

Another book in the series I loved. If you're a fan, don't miss it!

Elizabeth finds her Shelter in Cade🏠

Beth has been struggling with her agoraphobia, fear of venturing outside her home, when a fire breaks out in her frying pan. Cade and his fellow firefighters come to the rescue. When Penelope, Cade’s sister, runs in he realises this was the friend Pen always spoke to him about.

Challenges and obstacles galore for this couple, but with support, love and concerned friends and family they finally manage to work them out😁 Really enjoyed this story after reading Protecting Summer initially and hoping that Beth would find her HEA💕 Look forward to reading Hayden’s story next...❣️

I kept telling myself I wasn't going to get involved in another Stoker series. But Beth appears in so many other books, that I just had to read her story. I wasn't disappointed. Yes, Cade is a great hero (he seems more real and a little less alpha than a lot of Ms. Stoker's heroes), but this is definitely Beth's story. I was glad to see her get her HEA. (and I liked, too, that she's "better" with her agoraphobia, though not cured at the end--keeps it real, imo)

Elizabeth (Beth) survived a nightmare kidnapping only to find herself trying to fight her demons without success. Cade knows what it is like not to be able to help someone he loves, so when he meets Beth, he knows that he cannot walk away. Will Beth be able to overcome her fears and give Cade a chance? I really like this story.

4.5 ⭐️ Cade is a dream. That is all.

~Beth survived being kidnapped and assaulted.. She even moved to Texas for a fresh start but now she's too terrified to leave her apartment, too afraid of the what if. When she accidentally starts a fire, a certain firefighter steals her attention and a new obsession begins.~

another Susan Stoker book to love.

A woman traumatized and suffering from agoraphobia - she can’t leave her apartment. And a firefighter who comes to her rescue during a kitchen fire. Quite a pair.

Another Susan Stoker audiobook I was enthralled with.

Cade and Beth are a couple who have to work together and Beth is tough.

Loved them. Loved this story.

If you've read the SEAL of Protection series by Susan than you're familiar with Elizabeth's role in Protecting Summer, book four. In this book, we're reunited with her. If you haven't read that series, I recommend it as it will give you more of Beth's story prior to her move to Texas.

Three years ago, Elizabeth, Beth, was in the wrong place at the wrong time, resulting in tragedy and it's left scars on her in more ways than one. However, she is talking with a support group and has made a best friend, Penelope, who also struggles with some demons of her own. (Yes, this is Penelope from Protecting the Future, book 8 in the SEAL of Protection series.)

Beth meets Cade, a firefighter and Penelope's brother, when a small fire erupts while cooking.Thankfully, Cade can see the struggle she's having when she's told she needs to go outside to get checked out. He's able to help ease her out of the start of a panic attack and they're both surprised by the connection they each feel.

As Cade and Beth slowly explore where this connection could lead, Cade helps her as she continually struggles with the aftereffects of her attack. See, Beth has become somewhat of an agoraphobic, preferring the safety of her apartment over the unknown of the outside. She can go out, but she needs a support system, a buddy, which is usually Pen, as they tend to support and help each other. Cade wants to be that person she relies on and realizes he wants his role in her life to be permanent.

But they both have some things they need to work through before they can get their HEA. For one, it seems Beth has found a new coping mechanism. One that doesn't sit well with a firefighter, yet he knows he loves her and wants to help. Beth knows she needs to stop and wants to be, in her eyes, a woman that's worthy of Cade.

As certain circumstances cause things, hurtful things, to be said, Beth knows she needs to take the necessary steps to heal, to be the person she wants to be. Cade, heartbroken over his part in all of it, wants her happy, and preferably with him.

Will Beth get the help she needs to be at peace, as much as she possibly can at least, with her past so that she can have a future with Cade? Will Cade be able to accept that Beth will have good and bad days? Can he give her what she needs? Can they move forward together or will their differences be too great?

While I'll never understand completely what those suffering from agoraphobia live with, what I experienced while reading this story just the glimpse of the daily struggle that I did see was heartbreaking. I pray that every day greater strides are made in treating it and I pray for those who suffer from it.

As I previously stated above, I highly recommend any book from this author. I've been hooked since reading Protecting Caroline and my love and appreciation for her talent has only grown with each subsequent book. One-click this book now, and honestly, all of her other books as well. I believe you'll love them as much as I do.

Another Susan Stoker book, another all night read. Shelter For Elizabeth is the latest installment in the Badge of Honor : Texas Heroes series. Cade Turner, a firefighter, met Beth Perkins after a small fire accident in Beth's apartment. She's been kidnapped in the past and now has agoraphobia. Beth fears of being kidnapped again if she tries to be out in the open outside the confines of her apartment.

No doubt, there's instant attraction between Cade and Beth. Cade's sister turns out to be a close friend of Beth. Despite Beth's condition, Cade pursues her.
The way Cade was with Beth made me fall for him from the start. I know it must be hard to be always conscious and prepared if the person you're dating has some serious baggage like Beth. He started sweet and understanding and stayed like that until he learned Beth's secret obsession. He might have just came on strong on the way he confronted Beth regarding it. I felt like he should handled it in a calmer way. He definitely tried to make up for it in the end of the book.

Beth's story is somewhat a very sensitive matter for me. Maybe it was not what I was expecting to read but nonetheless Susan did a great job of writing a survivor after the nightmare that Beth went through. If I were her friend, I'll definitely drop anything when she needs me. I also liked how they took things slow, because it won't be realistic if Beth just went on and had sex with Cade after their first or second date.

I honestly didn't know what to think of Beth's new found obsession. It's kinda hard to say its insanse because what do I know of the things she experienced after being kidnapped and raped? People do have different ways on coping and surviving. So I'm not judging Beth. And since Cade's a full pledge firefighter, the conflict made the story interesting.

Overall, if you're looking for average angst and a hot firefighter, go grab this one and you won't be disappointed.

Honestly, this would have been one of the best Stoker stories hands down except for one major major mistake - and I have to say it - Shame on you Susan!

Good stuff first...well, it's a Susan Stoker story! I just love how it ties into Protecting Summer. Too often there's another character readers relate to that just fades into the sunset and we're left wondering what happened...in this case we find out that it isn't always sunshine after the rescue by the big bad alpha-male. The trauma usually continues and sometimes worsens, but because it is a Susan Stoker story we know it will have a much much deserved HEA all the way around!

'Shelter for Elizabeth' deals with some tough emotional issues without going over the top with the schmaltz, tastefully, sweetly but it does have one major flaw and why I have to knock my five stars down to three - that being Pen sharing details with her brother about, or that, Beth discussed in therapy. Yeah, major no-no and you get I feel strongly about this.

It may be a basic building block of the beginning of the story but anyone who knows anything about individuals dealing with any type of trauma and/or abuse, who seek treatment and help, knows what a huge taboo that is. It would not/should not happen and would constitute a major violation of trust, not only of the individual, but of the group as a whole.

Beth would not brush that aside so easily and to be honest, in the real world I do not believe for one moment Pen would betray the trust afforded or divulge one thing unless someone's immediate life were in danger. These are very serious and real issues. They should be portrayed accurately because you never know who could be reading this story and may NOT seek treatment fearing disclosure. For-Shame!

I recieved an ARC from the author herself in exchange for an honest review.

Firstly, I'd like to say that I am quite biased about any of Susan's books. I have loved every one of them, though her SEAL's will always have a special place in my heart.

Shelter for Elizabeth was, no, IS an outstanding book. I have been waiting impatiently to read Elizabeth's story who we first meet in Susan's SEAL of Protection series.

She was, unfortunately, kidnapped, raped and tortured by a sicko that really had no interest in her whatsoever. What hit close to home for was her agrophobia because my best friend also suffers from this condition.

What I loved about Elizabeth was that, despite it all, she is a strong and independent woman, yet doesn't realise it. I love that she's a computer geek. Tex does too, obviously.

Her relationship with Cade is sweet, romantic. Yes, they do hit a bit of a rocky phase, but love can surpass anything right? in this book is no different. Cade's an Alpha male and actually ENJOYS being someone's hero. Of course, he is literally a hero (being a firefighter and all). Cade and Elizabeth compliment each other with their banter. Yet Cade isn't afraid to call bullshit when his woman says something he doesn't like.

This is by far the best book yet and next up is Justice for Boone. I can't wait to read this one, I desperately hope Hayden gets her happily ever after.
