The Hamilton brothers have horse racing in their blood, and their sprawling Kentucky farm is the family’s pride and joy. But they’ve got plenty of passion to spare…
Nick Hamilton has always known he’d take the reins of the family business when his father died, but that doesn’t make it any easier when the time comes. Especially with his two siblings tempted by a shrewd offer from a huge corporation to buy Hamilton Industries. Needing advice, Nick turns to his sensible childhood friend, Becca Stark—and finds her suddenly grown-up beauty ignites brand-new confusion, and crystal clear desire…
Becca has loved Nick for as far back as she can remember, but she decided long ago that telling him would be a mistake. Stubborn, strong Nick doesn’t see her as anything but the tomboy she used to be—or does he? As she helps him untangle his feelings about the ranch’s future, the familiar bond between them heats into an explosive attraction—and the kind of love that just might take the lead…
Praise for Melissa West’s Racing Hearts
“An emotional story filled with heart, humor, and second chances, Racing Hearts is a love letter to small towns, southern pride, and the heartbeat of all tight communities—its strong families. I laughed, I cried, and I never wanted to leave. An incredible story!” --Rachel Harris, New York Times bestselling author
Melissa West is the USA TODAY bestselling author of swoony Southern romance and YA sci-fi romance, all with lots of kissing. Because who doesn't like kissing?. She lives outside of Atlanta, GA with her husband and two daughters and spends most of her time writing, reading, or fueling her coffee addiction.
She holds a B.A. in Communication Studies and a M.S. in Graphic Communication, both from Clemson University.
I liked the other stories in this series and honestly was most excited for Nick's story.
I really liked Becca. She's so sweet and so good. And while she smarts off to Nick, when it comes to him, every decision she makes sort of revolves around him. As for Nick, he's swimming in grief and doesn't even realize it. He and Becca are just so right and perfect together that of course he has to continuously push her away and act like an ass.
The push and pull is where I started to lose my interest. I didn't think it would be all angsty all the time. Don't get me wrong, I did love the story {and the epilogue is damn near perfection}, but I really wanted more fluff.
**Huge thanks to Lyrical Shine and NetGalley for providing the arc in exchange for an honest review**
A while back readers will remember that I read and reviewed Wild Hearts which was Book #2 in the Hamilton Stables series and we met the Hamilton Brothers - Tripp, Alex and Nick. In this book, the boys had come back home due to their father being ill and on his death bed. Book #3 is set five years after that and is the youngest brother Nick's story. It has been five years since their farther Carter Hamilton passed away and Nick took over his father's business side of things while Alex and Tripp worked on the Stables. The business has been steadily declining and the staff are miserable and Nick is finding himself floundering and losing touch of who he really is . He doesn't want to lose the business, as if he sells then he will view it as if he had failed his father. Since they were both eight years old, Nick has always had his best friend Becca Stark by his side no matter what has happened. Becca has always loved Nick and hope that maybe he might feel the same day, but she hasn't said anything as she values their friendship too much and Nick has been through so much from the death of not only his father but also his fiancee Britt who passed away from Cancer. When Nick finds himself snowed under with pressure, he comes back home and straight in the arms of best friend Becca as they start hanging out again and even taking a diving class together. It seems Becca has caught the interest of the instructor Zac who is Kate Hamilton's older brother - Kate is married to Alex. This makes Nick jealous , can Nick find the courage to tell Becca how he really feels about her or will it be too late as she is given the opportunity to start a new career and life in Lexington ? Can Nick let go of the past and the black cloud that hangs in his heart and let Becca in completely or has he lost her forever ?
Find out in Book #3 and the final story of The Hamilton Stables Series as Melissa West concludes with the final brother's story.
Silent Hearts was a heartwarming friends to lovers read, I really enjoyed it.
From the first page I knew this was going to be a good read. I loved watching the highly strung up Nick slowly come undone and open up his heart to Becca and the possibility of something more. Becca and Nick have a deep and trusting friendship, it was heartwarming watching them take that step from friends to lovers. I understood their fears and worries but knew these two had a strong foundation to get past these concerns.
Silent Hearts was an emotional, fun and sweet read that will bring out all the feels.
Silent Hearts is the third book from the Hamilton Stables as while each book can be read as a standalone I highly recommend you read them all. The Hamilton brothers have been a joy to get to know.
Thank you to the lovely and talented Melissa West for writing and sharing her characters with us.
A big thank you to Kensington Books ~ Lyrical Shine via NetGalley for the advance copy.

This would have easily received a 4 star stars if it was not for that ending. I mean I love the whole grand gesture things normally but I literally felt like he just bought her love. After everything he put her through? I'm not saying he should have begged and grovelled more, who am I kidding? He totally should have begged and grovelled more. Instead after 2 weeks of not even contacting her he just buys her house and tells I love you and she takes her back? What even?????? I was literally so mad in the last few chapters, I could have screamed at him. Yeah for that reason alone I dropped one whole star. Nick Hamilton, I am not happy with you.
Silent Hearts is the third book in the Hamilton Stables series by Melissa West and it is one of my favorite kinds of stories – friends to lovers. While part of a series, it isn’t completely necessary to read books one and two but I highly recommend you do. Not just because you will then know the characters mentioned, but also because the Hamilton brothers are great characters.
This book’s main characters are Nick and Becca. Nick and Becca have been friends forever and where Nick hasn’t always seen Becca as the woman for him, Becca has definitely viewed him as the man for her. There was a period where Nick was engaged to someone else and I mention this because that relationship, as well as the loss of his parents, have caused Nick to close himself off from relationships a little bit.
I’m on the fence with my feelings about Nick. As the son who has always been focused on taking over the business, Nick does just that when their father dies and this only creates more heartburn for him. He is a solid character but while his area of the business isn’t doing so great, his brothers are becoming more successful and it is clear that he holds that against him. Now – I also don’t blame him for being angry. They went behind his back with some things and that definitely wasn’t cool. Nick’s default is to find Becca when he needs to not think about all the things that are off for him and she is always there for him.
I really liked Becca. She has grown up in Triple Run and has always been seen as Nick’s friend and being a small town, everyone has an opinion about what they are to each other. Of course, almost everyone but Nick can really see what Becca feels for Nick no matter what she says.
I enjoyed Becca and Nick together. With their friendship, she isn’t afraid to call him out on his crap and stand up for herself but still support him the way he needs her to. One of the things West does well (in my opinion) is write the romance and this book was no exception. The build of the more than friends relationship piece was great and as always, I look forward to more from her in this genre.
If you are looking for a quick romance, definitely check this book (and the rest of the series) out. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, Melissa West writes wonderful stories and everyone should read them.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the review copy.
One of my favorite tropes, hands down, is the “Friends to Lovers” trope. Probably because my husband and I were the best of friends before we fell in love (I highly recommend this, nothing better than falling in love with your best friend). Silent Hearts, by Melissa West, fits the bill for this particular trope, is an easy read, and well-written, but I was hard-pressed to get behind one of the main characters or the romance.
Becca Stark and Nick Hamilton have been best friends for most of their lives, but for Becca it’s always been more. The wealthy Nick has been the man of her dreams for as long as she can remember and despite the fact that he doesn’t seem to feel the same way, she can’t get past her love for him. Nick has lost his parents and his fiancée and fears loving anyone ever again. With his brothers pressuring him to sell their family’s company, Becca is the only person in his life that makes him happy, causing him to realize she may be more than just his best friend.
I liked Becca. She’s loyal, smart, and funny. She’s sacrificed her dreams for family and, at 33, she’s a waitress in the small town of Triple Run rather than the nurse she dreamed of being. Even worse, she feels that she’ll never be good enough for town prince Nick, whose family is royalty, their horse farm and business a town mainstay. Becca really finds herself in Silent Hearts, realizing that being in her 30s doesn’t mean her life is over or that she can’t fulfill her dreams. She sees that she doesn’t have to be defined by what the towns people think of her or by her relationship with Nick. These characteristics make a great heroine and Melissa West wrote her well.
Nick, however, is barely tolerable. He starts off well, acknowledging to himself early on that he feels more than friendship for Becca. Even though he is struggling with his side of the family business, which is failing, and is resentful of his brothers success in business and in life, he decides to confess his feelings for Becca, convincing her that they should give in to their feelings. This is where things go downhill for me because he enters into his romantic relationship with Becca unsure of where he wants it to go. He doesn’t want to be hurt again, to lose someone he loves, and he tells himself that he can have a casual relationship with his best friend. This made me so angry and it only got worse as Nick got more wishy-washy as the story went on. He ends up hurting Becca in ways I’d never forgive, and I found myself rooting for an un-happily ever after.
I suspect that part of the problem with the story stemmed from it being third in a trilogy. I kept thinking that there had to be some relationship building between Nick and Becca in the first two books that would make Nick seem more like a book hero and less like a petulant child. Reviews from people who’ve read the whole series have been glowing, which would seem to support this theory. And, like I said, West is a good writer. The pace of the book flowed smoothly, and the early interactions between Becca and Nick were sweet and totally reflective of two people in a lifelong friendship.
2.5 Stars for Silent Hearts. Heat Level: 3
I received this book from Pump Up Your Book in exchange for honest feedback.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Silent Hearts was my first introduction to the Hamilton brothers, and they certainly appear to be a lively lot. All hail the Hamilton brothers! It's worth it to note that I had no trouble following along with the story even though I missed out on the first two books. Silent Hearts definitely reads as a standalone, but it also spiked my curiosity. I really want to go back and read the first two books because I want to see how Trip and Alex came to be so happy and in love.
I think it would have also helped to see the dynamic between the brothers in the first two books. I'm curious if it was as strained as it was in Silent Hearts, or if they were chummy chums. Not that we didn't get to see the brothers happy and together in Silent Hearts, it just took a bit of time for us to get there because Nick had his head up his butt for a good portion of the book. I mean, I get it. He lost his grandfather, his parents, and his fiancé. That would be rough on anyone. But I couldn't help but be annoyed by Nick's waffling. One moment, it would appear that he was ready to reconcile with his brothers, but the next moment, something small would set him off and he'd go back to being a close-minded jerk to his brothers. He also played with Becca's emotions too much, which caused me to "like" the book as opposed to "loving" it.
Becca and Nick have been best friends for more than twenty years, and they have both loved each other for as long as they can remember--only, neither of them ever admitted their feelings to the other one. They let the fear of rejection and the fear of ruining their friendship stop them from truly being happy. Admittedly, Becca and Nick are really cute together. The fact that they have known each other since they were eight-years-old or so was totally endearing. They understand each other down to the core. Put simply, they're perfect together. Which is why Nick's assery was generally disappointing at times. Becca is just so sweet, smart, and sassy. Luckily, Nick learns to let go of the grief and with a little prodding, pulls off the grandest of grand gestures.
I hope the Littleton brothers will get their own stories! They were just so charming, and Zac and his little girl made my not-really-ready-to-have-a-baby ovaries squee. Overall, Silent Hearts was a pleasant enough read, but I probably would not re-read it. However, I'm definitely going back to read Trip and Alex's (his story excites me most) stories!
My first of Melissa West's Books, Silent Hearts is the story of Nick and Becca. It is the third book in the Hamilton Stables, a standalone.
I've always loved the friends - lovers concept and even understand the hesitation in embracing love when their best friend is involved ... I know right? But it is one of my favorite concepts a reason I picked this book.
Melissa West has a nice writing style, writes the relationship dynamics and transformation of their relationship quite well.
I loved the harmless flirting and banters of Nick and Becca and how they're friendship has survived all odds. I love how brooding Nick is different and himself around Becca and how he looks up to her and takes her advice without second thoughts.
However, I found a few aspects a few scenarios little hard to believe, humor aside - I understand this is fiction, really I do. Nick and Becca were both giving and I rooted for their HEA. Do they get one or will their issues stand in between? An emotional, heartwarming book with ingrained family values and the goodness of close-knitted communities. Enjoy the ride!

This is a short romance coming in at 174 pages. It is very light on the sex and high on the story feature. Becca and Nick are best friends who both want to take it to another level. The dialogue flows and the characters are relatable. It is easy to fall in love with Becca as she fights her insecurities but actually does something about them by deciding to go back to school to become a nurse. I loved the Kentucky stating being a native myself. The romance formula of misunderstandings works really well here and West doesn't over do it. All said, this book is a success.
I was given a free ARC copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest and independent review. Best friends Nick and Becca both want more from each other but seem unable to admit to their feelings. The build up is palpable and the chemistry strong. A very readable romantic novel. A quick and easy, feel good book. 4****
Thank you to NetGalley and Lyrical Shine for providing me with an egalley of this book to read and give an honest review. The opinions expressed here are my own. I really like Melissa West. I've read all her YA and so moving into the adult realm seemed like it might not work for her. But it truly does. I really enjoyed the first two books in this series. I didn't think I would because I don't know much about horses and racing. I figured I'd be lost. But the stories are not just about horses. They are about relationships and romance and love. Best of all it's the friends to lovers trope which is one of my favorites. This is Nick's story. If you've read the other stories you'll understand. And of course Becca's, as well. And the story is about second chances and how they can make our lives better. I really love the Hamilton brothers so it's not surprising I love Nick. He's just as charming as his brothers. His friendship with Becca is so genuine. It's not surprising it turns into more, it's just surprising it never did prior to this story! There's a lot of push and pull with them, which was a little overdone for me, honestly. But overall I liked them together. West does a great job with having this story in the world she has built. The pacing was good and her writing was easy and flowed well. While you could probably read this as a stand alone, I do feel you should read the first two books in this series to really get the feel of this one.
“I don’t want to screw us up, but I don’t want anyone else. Only you, Bec. It’s always been you.”
“God,did she ever love him. He was difficult and he’d hurt her worse than anyone else had dared, but she still loved him.”
Melissa West has once again blown me away. She has left me speechless, with a smile on my face and a heart filled with love. Silent Hearts was just the read I needed and more. Ever since I finished Wild Hearts, I have been dying to get my hands on this book and learn more about the broody Hamilton brother, Nick. And let me tell you, I was not disappointed.
Now, I have to tell you, I have been in the worst book funk. I mean the worst. So, when I picked up this book, I was hoping, I was praying that this book would pull me out of the funk I was in and boy did it ever. This book totally exceeded my expectations.
Silent Hearts is told from dual points of view and pulls you in from the very first page. I was unable to put Silent Hearts down. I immediately got lost and consumed with Nick and Becca’s story. Nick is one of those characters that you can’t help but love. He’s complicated, broody, has alpha tendencies, but is afraid to fall in love. So many moments I either wanted to slap him or shake him. I wanted to yell at him to wake up and see Becca before he would lose her forever. And Becca….This girl…She was so sweet, and caring. The kind of girl you could always count on. She has loved Nick for as long as she remembered, but never thought she would stand a chance with a guy like Nick.
Nick and Becca together were a force to be reckoned with. Their connection was so real, so undeniable. I loved their push and pull. I was captivated by the will they, won’t they moments. They made me laugh-soooo many times. They frustrated me. They brought tears to my eyes. And most of all, they made me fall in love.
One of the best things for me, was how real the characters were. I can not say that enough. Melissa West made these characters feel so real to me. Like they were a part of me. She wrote them in a way that made them so easy to connect with and so easy to understand. I loved that Nick and Becca weren’t perfect. Nick had a lot of issues that he had to move past and he made a lot of mistakes along the way. You knew that he was just going to mess up. But, I gotta tell you, watching his character grow, experiencing the journey to his HEA, was just amazing. I loved every swoon-worthy, heart-breaking, angsty moment.
I honestly can not say enough about this book. Silent Hearts was well written. It was a beautiful friends to lovers/second chance romance. It had just the right balance of angst, romance, and drama. I just loved it. I was consumed from beginning to end. I was taken on such an incredible, emotional journey and I just loved it! I can not wait to see what journey Melissa West will take me on next.

Best friends are awesome and Nick Hamilton had found his at the age of eight. Yet, he lost his heart at the age of ten. That girl was Becca Stark. Now their thirty-three and he feels more unsettled than ever. You see Nick comes from what most would call the royal Hamilton family. There is Trip the eldest son who handles the Stables, Nick handles Industries, and Alex the Breeding. Yet, when their father passed Nick became robotic. In a very short time he had lost three very important and close people in his life. Because he was going to be working in the business end of it he had gone to an Ivy League school. While there he met a girl Britt that he fell in love with. He brings her home with him never telling the one person he had no secrets from or at least she thought they never did, Becca. So when she got all ready and did herself up all nice and pretty and went to meet up with him and guess who was with him? Britt. She was heartbroken. To find out he was engaged to another woman was a lot to take in and that is when she knew at that moment. She knew she would never be more than that tomboy best friend to him and nothing more. She had left Kentucky nursing program to care for her ill grandmother when no one else in her family would. It broke her heart when she passed Nick was there for her when she passed just like she was there for him when his mama passes and when Britt ended up passing. But the one that just did him in was when his dad passed. He couldn’t go home for a long time so he stayed with her for at least a month if not more. But he changed after all that. He crawled into himself and started spending more and more time with her. He wasn’t with her with her but the town was talking, his family was talking and her customers at the diner were too. Yeah she was a diner waitress and even though the people liked her they didn’t think she was good enough to be with royalty like Nick. So when they heard he was sweet on someone from the family and from the ranch staff they just knew it couldn’t be her. The town was split half and half for her and half against. When Becca finally caught the gossip she heard he was dating a doctor. So once again she wasn’t good enough and also not a friend enough for him to tell her he was dating. This book is like the game of telephone. You tell the first person and they tell someone and they tell someone and see where your message ends up and how it comes out. It is very cute and the characters are very down to earth. It is about two hearts that fell in love before ever telling their owners. By the time they caught on they had made one royal mess of things. It wasn’t until another guy starts to really see Becca before Nick sees Becca. Interesting. I give this 5 stars. I'm a huge fan of Melissa West's, and was extremely excited to be approved for this novel. I've read the previous two books in the series and really enjoyed the Hamilton brother's journeys. Nick was always the disconnected one, always apart from his other brothers and was very quiet. I never knew what he was up to. And I didn't really get too much into Nick's head now that I've read his book. He's always paranoid that things are going to go south and be devastating for him, which is the opposite of his brothers who dive head first in things. So Nick was definitely not my favorite of the Hamilton brothers.
Becca, on the other hand, is awesome. She decided that she wanted more for her life and instead of just hoping and dreaming like most do when they want more, Becca actually went out and did it. She took a class to learn how to scuba dive. She applied for schools to continue her schooling to be a nurse. She dived into a more intimate relationship with Nick, even though he's her best friend. And she is so selfless. Always helping her sister when she needs money. Ending school 10 years ago to take care of her grandmother. I seriously adore Becca and aspire to be like her someday.
I enjoyed this book. I didn't like it as much as the others in the series, but it was definitely still a great novel. I'll be interested to see if Melissa West will write about the Littleton brothers, because I think that would be a great series to read about :)
So glad I got this novel early and, as always, I will be looking out for more novels by this author! Definitely read her stuff!
I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. The expected publication date is May 10th, 2016.
This is the third story in the Hamilton stables series which centers around three brothers. This one the middle brother Nick. While I don't believe it is necessary to read the others to enjoy this story, I did read the second one which centred on Alex' story.
This story is about two best friends that are meant for each other but don't know it. You know how it goes, they have feelings for each other however do not what to jeopardize years of friendship for a romance that may or may not work out. This leads to drama and angst and trouble in the relationship.
I really enjoyed the character of Becca. She was strong and opinionated yet insecure and vulnerable underneath if you really looked beyond the surface. Although lacking the pedigree of the Hamilton's, she had just as much if not more character. Nick on the other hand was a little bit of a bore, except when he was with Becca. I think this was intentional as he struggled with his fathers business and what steps to take with it and his career.
At the end of the day who doesn't love a story about best friends and soulmates? Even within the story it alludes to the Cinderalla story that is Becca and Nick. This will capture the attention of the romantics and romantics at heart.
I love friends to lovers stories! This is a nice one
I liked the heroine, Becca. She was always a very loyal friend. She has a bit of an inferiority complex that doesn't quite jive for me. She was accepted to and attended Duke, until she withdrew to care for her sick grandmother. Considering the presumed intellect and her desire to be a nurse, the waitressing thing didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I figured she could've gotten a job working in a doctors office or something, at least.
The hero seemed like a generally nice guy who's alter ego is this grief-stricken, brooding, intolerant, inflexible grouch. We see a bit too much of the alter-ego for my tastes. Yet, grief is hard on the heart and Nick is proof positive of that fact. He seems to mess up more often than not, but he comes around in the end. It helps that throughout the book it is clear that he is without malice, but simply grieving and allowing that to cloud everything else.
Thankfully, all comes right at the end and we get to witness the HEA they've been waiting 20 years to share.
I received an ARC of this book, via NetGallery, in exchange for a fair and honest review.
3 1/2 Stars I love a good book about best friends who are fighting their feelings for each other, each other thinking the other just wants to be friends but the other wants so much more but they are feeling the same way & friends & family can see what they are feeling & Silent Hearts is that book. You can just feel Nick & Becca fighting their feelings afraid if they tell each other how they feel they may loose their friendship of 20+ years if the react to their attraction. I just wanted to go thru this book & wring Nick's neck in parts of this book & saying "you jerk realize wants in front of you & start living for today & your future". Nick was trying to keep his dad & his former fiancee's memory alive not realizing he was loosing what was more important in life his family & Becca. The only thing I disliked was Nick's pity party, his going back & forth one moment he was ok with his brothers & Becca, then the next if they didn't kiss his butt he blew up & didn't want anything to do with, at one time I was thinking Becca just give up on him & his pity party, you deserve better, but then Nick did redeem himself.
I was looking forward to Nick's story. This guy carries way too much on his shoulders, and he's made himself emotionally secluded from everyone. Becca is his best friend. She's the only person who's managed to put cracks in some of his walls. They hurt each other and are risking their life long friendship. Silent Hearts kept me tense while I read it. Every time either Nick or Becca's feelings got hurt, I felt it too. This was a wonderfully, emotional friends to more story.
The ARC of Silent Hearts by Melissa West was kindly provided to me by the publisher through Net Galley for review. The opinions are my own.
I thought this one was an awesome read! It's a great friends to lovers story between Nick and Becca. Nick is still reeling from the loss of his father. While his brothers seem to have hit their stride and are achieving great things in areas of the family ranch business, Nick's struggling and can't seem to get his footing. While his brothers are ready to sell the business Nick is in charge of, he's not ready to give up yet fearing he will be letting his father down. With the love of his family and Becca, Nick finally sees what is really important in life and is determined to get what he wants. Has he waited to long? Hurt Becca too much?? You really want to read this one and find out. I highly recommend it.
Silent Heart by Melissa West....This is the third book in the series and oh my...what a way to end the series. This story deserve more than 5 stars. Melissa West wrote each book Racing Heart, Wild Hearts and Silent Hearts to perfection, she is an amazing author. Her characters are always likable and relatable Nick and Becca are no different. Nick has experienced terrible tragedies in his life which causes him to struggle and Becca is his best friend and there to support and love him through this great book. Can these two make a relationship work? If you have not read this series or book, it is a must read. I received a complimentary book for an honest review.
This story centers around the Hamilton family, especially the brothers. Nick is the brother left to manage the family business after his father's death when his other brothers leave to live their own lives. Becca has always been Nick's best friend and has always been there for him, through thick and thin. When Nick wonders if they could be more if he takes a chance, he worries if their friendship will survive. Super story and super characters. I have not read the first two books in this series, but will be going to back to read about the other brothers. Nick and Becca both seem like good, sweet people and you find yourself pulling for them. Highly recommend.
Nick Hamilton has lost a few important people in his life, but the death of his father has hit him hard. He’s at odds with his brothers, and he’s running himself ragged trying to keep his father’s company afloat. Yet, there’s always been one person he can turn to when he needs to talk. That person is his best friend, Becca Stark. Except lately, he’s been thinking about her as more than just his best friend. Can he finally convince Becca to give him a chance? Read More
Silent Hearts tells the story of evolving relationships. How people change due to circumstance, maturity and environment. Although understated, Nick and Becca are the spark that drives this story and his family is the match that sets it on fire. I received an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. Family, love, friendship and business collide in this story of growth and heart.
