There is something wrong with this book. 33 CEOs are interviewed. 32 men, one woman. Could the authors not find more than one woman worthy to include? Absolute rubbish. 1998 sexism at its finest, thank you Price Waterhouse.

I was the ghost writer for Indonesia part.

--

No no no .. this is not intended as a BOOK REVIEW at all. It’s just just a sharing of my personal experience as ghost writer (the term that I only knew sometime in 1996). For those who are not familiar with this term, it’s basically you contribute writing something for a book but your name is not “allowed” to be printed – not even in ‘credits’ part of the book. Oh man .. that was the first time I knew that publishing industry is a cruel business. Who did not allow to have my name printed? The celebrities author(s)!!! Why …. “You are no one, Gatot!”. They got a point: who the hell I am in a thought leadership business, regardless how great and smart I am? I am not Michael Porter or Philip Kotler or Stephen Covey or Tom Peters. So if I put myself as one of the authors, who is gonna buy the book? Why people have to buy book that is written by no one? Yeah .. it’s got the point, really …

Even though .. as human being, you might feel “unfair” whereby you contribute something but your contribution is considered nothing! That’s life man ….

The story begun when I had a very strong passion in thoughts leadership and especially the filed of strategy making. I worked at Price Waterhouse Consulting as Senior Consultant in Strategy Focus Group in 1994, headed by my guru David Robertson. I enjoyed every part of the work I did in strategy field, starting from formulation of strategy down into business process re-engineering. I really enjoyed it man! I readmany books on finance, marketing and strategy making. What a fabulous experience. A year later I was promoted as Manager, reporting directly to David and having 3 subordinates (consultants) . We had a great team spirit. A year later David returned to Australia and I was assigned as Focus Group Leader – Strategy in one of Big Six Consulting Firms! I was so proud with it, man!

During the year of leadership role in Strategy Focus Group, I was asked by a panel of Partners, including Indonesia practice to participate in the making of CEO thoughts leadership forum which at the end came out as a book titled as Straight From The CEO. I was glad doing the job. My role was first: to identify who is the CEO representative from Indonesia and the second part is: to conduct interview with him, third: to write about it. A collaborative work that I really enjoyed. Finally, I came up with Tanri Abeng (CEO of Bakrie Brothers) as representative from Indonesia. So I arranged the interview session with him and made it happen with our Indonesia Partner. After the interview I made report and prepared write up about his thoughts and leadership style. The write-up went a long many revisions because it went back and forth Jakarta – London – US, etc. Finally I was informed that I was just a ghost writer for the project. I was a bit disappointed but … hey … I learn a lot man …! Why must I be disappointed? So .. I continued the work tirelessly and finally … in 1998 .. the book was fomally launched all over the world!!!! (and … I was part of it .. even though my name was NOT printed … never mind! I took the lesson any way ….)…
