Born in Cheshire in 1928, Robert Leeson was a journalist for forty years, interrupted by army service in Egypt. He began to write for children in the 1960s and has had over 65 books published. In 1985 he received the Eleanor Farjeon Award for services to children's literature.

Un romanzo interessante che meriterebbe più attenzione: è la storia di una figlia che lotta per uscire dallo schema di "madre sostituta" cui il mondo sembra volerla relegare a tutti i costi, costruendosi con fatica un'identità, cercando di conciliare i propri desideri con le aspettative altrui, e non è affatto un argomento scontato come può sembrare. Il finale porta con sé un senso di pacifica realizzazione. La mia edizione consiglia: "dai 14 anni", ma di mio lo consiglierei a molti giovani adulti anche un poco più grandi, ancora intenti a districarsi tra famiglia e futuro, anche solo per lo speranzoso conforto che ne ho ricavato io.

Jan is left to care for the family now that her mother has left them, she also has to cope with a new job. It was far more difficult of sorting out her feelings for her boss. Must she go on feeling responsible for everything or she can continue with living her own life?
