I have read the free ebook version made available by the RAND Corporation. The book has more good data than I anticipated. It is light on mathematical formulation (zero equations even though some are hidden behind natural language) which should make it readable by everyone. Dating from 1964, there is a need for a new "Planets for Man" book reflecting the latest knowledge on this exciting field.

Questo libro è stato scritto nel 1964. Cinque anni prima di andare sulla Luna, già si facevano pensieri sulle stelle. Di fatto, il testo è una disamina accurata dell'equazione di Drake, anche se questa non viene mai nominata. L'analisi è accurata non tanto per le scarse conoscenze dell'epoca, specie se paragonate ai limiti a cui ci ha portato negli ultimi due anni la missione Kepler, ma per il fatto che traccia un solco, una via. Molti dei ragionamenti sono ancora validi, altri non lo sono più, ma la rigorosità dell'analisi è qualcosa che andrebbe seguito anche oggi.
Inoltre, forse per l'influenza di Asimov, che ha collaborato al testo, questo è leggibile e scorrevole anche per gli italiani che di inglese abbiano solo dei rudimenti.
La pecca maggiore, in fondo, è che gli autori non siano più in vita per darci una versione aggiornata di questo volume, con tutte le ipotesi e le possibilità rivisitate alla luce delle conoscenze di oggi.

It was very simple and fun read. I read it to acquaint myself with human requirements for survival on other planets, as I develop my Sci-Fi novella.

A bit dated. It looks at the various requirements for planets to be habitable by us and makes guesses about how many are near to us.
