Visionaries, migrants, soldiers, and thieves-Will, as his friends call him, surrounds himself with all of these, and more. Obsessed with "the wisdom of the lowest classes," he views the world as a perennial outsider, in the company of men and women most would not want to meet in a dark alley. His work reflects this, as he winds dramatic irony and sarcasm together with romance and drama to paint a picture of the world that others prefer not to see.

William R. Herr was raised on the road, and continues to live there. When not travelling the United States behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer, he can be found in Central Pennsylvania, either writing, editing, or arguing with college students over hot cups of coffee.

He lives with his wife and an extremely vocal Irish Stafford-shire Terrier named "The Duke."

In FROM A BROKEN LAND, Will Herr creates a dark, mysterious fantasy world where the mist is alive and a supernatural blight threatens to end humanity. Gidon is a young Sidhean soldier who has witnessed the blight's horrors first-hand. Though well-trained in combat, he hasn't exactly been battle-tested yet. The Church sends him to Hammat, a rival land that believes all Sidheans are monsters, on a desperate mission: Gidon is to seek the help of the College of Seers, whose mystical powers may be able to stave off the blight. Since the Hammat are known to kill Sidheans on sight, Gidon disguises himself as a Hammat guard and winds up in East Carwich, a small village nestled in the snowy, misty woodlands, where he seeks Seer Renault, an old mystic with a tenuous relationship with the College. To maintain his guise, Gidon joins the local guard and soon finds himself drawn into their conflicts and politics.

Meanwhile, a young noblewoman named Kiranae flees an unwanted marriage, disguised as a commoner called simply Kira and determined to define her own fate. When her journey collides with Gidon's, forces of fate are set in motion, culminating in an epic battle for survival against the dark monsters within the mist.

The mysterious tone, dark worldbuilding, and steady pacing of FROM A BROKEN LAND make it a hypnotic read. The setting really comes to life, with intricate details about the magic, religion, lore, and politics woven into the narrative. The story takes place in a medieval-esque high fantasy world, with swordfights, taverns, and codes of honor. I love stories that take place in reimagined medieval worlds, so this book was like catnip to me. I also loved that Herr's book focused on the rank-and-file citizens of the world. While the nobility does play something of a role, the story is really about the everyday guards and citizens trying to survive in a harsh world.

This book is something of a coming-of-age story for Gidon, who starts off as just a simple messenger, posing as a simple guard, but soon finds himself thrust into a position of leadership, having to make decisions he never thought he'd face. His journey is reminiscent of the classic hero's journey we all know and love. And so is Kira's. Though she doesn't turn up until several chapters in, once she arrives, she makes a big splash. Stubborn, intelligent, and tougher than she seems, Kira quickly defies expectations and becomes a hero in her own right. She's determined to be "one of the guys" in a world that expects her to play the role of damsel-in-distress, and her tenacity makes her a fascinating character to read about.

Also worth mentioning is the colorful supporting cast, which includes the cantankerous old guard Rinkins, the roguish gambler Bergeran, and the icy Countess Damarc. And the mist itself. There's a creepy, atmospheric quality to this book, with the mist having a life of its own and an ominous voice that hums in the background of several scenes. Herr's writing reminds me somewhat of Ursula LeGuin's in the Earthsea books, with its flowing phrases and sharp descriptions. And the atmosphere reminded me of the Battle of Helm's Deep in the Two Towers... where you have supernatural darkness closing in on a group of ragtag underdogs.

I always know I love a book when I find myself having trouble writing a review, because I feel like my review can't do the book justice. And I find myself in this predicament right now, since there are so many layers to this story that can't be aptly described. This book grabbed me from the start and drew me in with its mysterious atmosphere, classic medieval-esque world, and intrepid characters. I ended up reading the entire second half in one sitting (staying up way later than I should have) because I just *had* to know how things turned out. Since FROM A BROKEN LAND is the first in a series, there's much that's left open at the end of the book, but it does have an ending in its own right (and a very satisfying one - enough to tide me over until book 2).

With its amazing worldbuilding, action-packed battles, and character conflicts, FROM A BROKEN LAND makes for thoroughly engaging and entertaining epic fantasy.

“When one prepares for life, one is prepared for death. He has no place among us, and can know only separation.”

Pennsylvania author William R. Herr has created a staggeringly original book – his debut novel – and from the polished quality of his writing we sense that there are many more legends or myths or, simply, stories to tell.

FROM A BROKEN LAND is Book One of a series THE BROKEN THRONE and the flavor of this mystical novel begins with the splendid cover art (by Aaron Acevedo) and extends into the pages of this epic with a language unexpectedly eloquent from an author unveiling his first vision: ‘The mist moved, and the world moved with it. It drifted between trees and along well-worn pathways, across rivers and the chatter of brooks, and through hamlet and city alike. It was everywhere and nowhere, both substance and absence, a bond of translucence which coiled without respect to power or privilege. It molded futures and caressed memory without care to time or distance. All things were within the mist’s grasp, and within it, everything was.’

William R. Herr has created a novel in the vein of the great romantics as well as with the finesse that embraces the riches of J. R. R. Tolkien’s ‘Hobbit’ books and George R.R. Martin's best-selling book series "A Song of Ice and Fire" (the source of the much lauded series ‘Game of Thrones’). He take us to a land of his imagination – a land we cannot be sure is wholly imaginary or one that represents a prophecy of where this universe may take us. That latter possibility is one that makes his writing so pungent. His creation of characters, not tropes, make this story sing. We may not be privy to the details of the story immediately, strange names of characters and places, but as the book moves along the imaginary tale becomes palpably realistic.

The author’s summary suggests the operatic stature of the story’s first episode: ‘Something in the mist is alive—or is it the mist, itself? Kiranae is a girl in flight, carried through the mists to escape a marriage she cannot abide. Gidon is a simple messenger, sent on a mission he is never expected to survive. Through coincidence, fate, or something stronger, they are brought together—bound to each other. But, deep within the shadows and mist, a wicked and threatening force watches them. Gidon must protect the girl, his men, and himself from a force and presence he cannot explain. Together, they are thrust into war, intrigue, and impossible love, never realizing that their lives are part of a larger, and darker, plan.’

This is an important and welcome new voice and Book 1 will create a following for the episodes to come. This is skillful, compelling writing.

In his epic debut science fiction/fantasy novel, the first book in the ‘Broken Throne’ series, William R. Herr has created an imaginary Kingdom, where battles are fought against a terrible, evil, enemy, one which can be seen only as shadows, and mist.

The story opens as a horrific blight sweeps through the lands, killing everyone and thing. In desperation, Cardinal Richmond sends, Gidon, a soldier and church emissary on a quest, one he is not expected to return from… he must travel to the land of Hammat, find a seer, and beg for aid against the blight.

Then there is Kiranae, a princess, fleeing from an evil prince with the help of her aunt the Countess Elna Damarc. To escape capture she finds herself freely entering the mist, not knowing what her fate will be.

The future however sees her stumbling from the forest in front of Gidon, Tenant, Seer Renault, and Guard Rinkins, on their quest, travelling through a land facing disaster and fighting the creatures in the shadows.

Fate it seems has thrown them together, and as this epic adventure unfolds there are fierce battles, terrible creatures, and untold dangers ahead for the group.

However, fate dictates that Kira and her aunt are to be reunited. When this happens, secrets are revealed which could change everything.

The author has created an amazing kingdom, with well-defined characters and a fantastic plot with danger, excitement, twists, and a hint of romance. Reading it, one very quickly becomes absorbed into the story, so much so that it is very difficult to put down. I highly recommend it for lovers of science fiction, fantasy and of course adventure.

This book has so much descriptive style writing that it's awesome. It really makes you feel you are inside the book with the characters. Although I feel the plot is brought about in more of part 2 of the book which is some chapters in. Its still great for that reason. The rising action is told halfway through the book. It doesn't really have a conclusion, because there are more books to follow it seems. We learn that there is a war starting because of the turn of events that happen. You kind of don't know who is friend or foe to the main character Gidon. He is a complete growth arc character. Gidon sets out on a mission because he is a messenger soldier. He tells his message to a seer. Which ends up becoming so much more in the turn of events and fates are crossed and intertwined. Gidon does make a few friends as well as enemies. A couple of his friends that stand with him even though oathbound are Rinkins and older soldier who is hard but great and Kira who he risk letting out his secret when trying to save her. His total mission is to stop the blight and will stop at nothing to carry it out. What a fantastic read.

Okay, I've taken some time to sit on this review. I'm not the best at writing them, so I'll try and hit everything I want to.

The world building of this universe is deep and rich. It makes me think of the level of details that George R.R. Martin puts into his books. Clothes, religions, races, cultures, all are so well developed. Yet, it has the writing style fit for its audience and reminds me a bit of Cinda Williams Chyma's writing in that it's deeply developed, but not full of an over abundance of details which is exactly how I like my fantasy novels.

The story itself is well paced. There's enough to hook, but it's a journey just like what the characters go through. It's an experience that requires full immersion which is probably why it took me so long to read it. In order for me to fully appreciate the world and the words, I needed to be completely in the zone otherwise I'd be robbing myself of the adventure taking place.

It was a great book. Take your time to really absorb and love it.

It's exciting to finally have a series worth reading. William Herr has done an excellent job debuting his first novel to the world, and what a story he has created. This story makes you hunger for answers. There is so much you know and even more to come later on. The author created an entirely new concept of medieval times meets Lord of the Rings and I love that type of fantasy fiction. Each concept was done in such a believable way and that's extremely important to me. A lot of care and detail went into this novel and it shows. From epic characters, to harrowing fights, impossible odds, and a Shadowman luring everyone to their fate... It's a fantastic read from start to finish. I can't wait for Book Two!

I'm not a big fan of what is often called high fantasy, but I do read a few now and then. I'm often unimpressed when I do so, left with the feeling that I've seen all this before. Not this time. From A Broken Land is not a novel on which the label "derivative" can be applied. While it contains many traditional fantasy elements, they are employed in ways that neatly, and to good effect, tweak some of what you might expect of a fantasy novel. I found myself caught up in this tale, and will soon own a copy of the second book, to see where the author takes it.

In the enchanting and engaging novel “From A Broken Land,” first-time novelist William R. Herr transports us through space and time to another land filled with foreboding shadows and mist. In this Book 1 of Herr’s, “The Broken Throne” Series, we are introduced to a devastating and mysterious blight that is encroaching on the countryside in every direction. Herr’s hero and heroine both set out on different journeys only to inevitably come together as one to try and stop the evil mist from spreading and killing everything in its path. Reminiscent in many ways of the works of Tolkien and Martin, Herr’s “From A Broken Land” is a wildly imaginative tale filled with sword fights, princesses, wizards and a heroes and bumblers sent out to patrol the roads, warn others and enlist them in this fight between good and evil.

“From A Broken Land” is different from the typical adventure tale partly because of Herr’s ability to blend dramatic irony and sarcasm with this kind of action that moves the plot along at a steady pace in this action drama. Herr’s characters literally leap off the page with the author’s unique and, at times, laugh-out-loud dialogue and edge-of-your- seat suspence. William R. Herr is at ease creating realistic action, battle scenes and dialogue at every level of discourse. Indeed, it’s often the conversations between characters that most endear them to us and invest us in their destinies.

Herr doesn’t waste much time trying to establish the world he has created. Instead he lets that world unfold as his multi-dimensional characters traverse it and discover the extent of the evil that surrounds them. This is a science fiction thriller that will leave you breathless with both suspense and laughter, as our hero/warrior travels throughout towns and villages meeting with memorable, irritable foot soldiers, obstinate wizards, and deadly goblins who materialize out of the mist with devastating and murderous powers.

“Upon the mist, darkness cast long shadows,” writes Herr at the outset. “Something lived within its towers and coils, and cast shadows that skulked through its substance. To the north, the dark forms drifted from the banks of mountains, across the haze of suspended ice.”

Using narrative that is creatively crafted and dialogue that both advances the story and is highly entertaining as unconventional a tale as the author’s own life has been, “From a Broken Land” is a stellar and promising first installment. It will take you to places unimaginable from the start and contains epic scenes and battles. If you’re looking for a great escape from the hum-drum of daily life, slip into the world of William R. Herr and “From A Broken Land.”

Highly recommended.

An epic fantasy adventure that will transport the reader to another world

In his debut fantasy novel, William R. Herr brings us an epic story of the battle between good and evil in From a Broken Land, the first installment of The Broken Throne trilogy.

With a poet’s finesse for description, Herr magically crafts a world where the elements of nature have a will of their own. A dark mist that is very much alive encroaches upon people, twining amongst their legs like a cat, listening into their conversations, whispering thoughts to them. While the mist lingers, a strange blight has struck the land, leaving death and destruction in its midst.

Desperate, the Cardinal sends a young man in search for help. Gidon, trained to fight but untried in battle, is sent on a mission from the church into the land of the enemy. He is charged with the task of finding help to stave off the blight – and not expected to survive.

Met with adversity as soon as he leaves, he is forced to kill another man for the first time. What he doesn’t know, is this is just the beginning of the fate that awaits him as he seeks aid for his fellow men.

Herr introduces two other sets of characters at the beginning of the book. Kiranae, a beautiful young girl in flight from an abusive prince, and Tertoillane and Bergeran, a lovely minstrel and her gambling escort. When their paths cross, the story only gets more interesting, and a bit distracting for Gidon as he develops feelings for Kiranae.

Herr does his world building as the reader moves through the book, introducing us to things through action and story development, which is an entertaining way to enter the lands of the Broken Throne series. He also inserts a division between church and science in the novel, and each chapter begins with a quote from the “Book of the True King” that is reminiscent of scripture.
Readers will find Herr’s book entertaining, filled with battles, romance, humor and memorable characters. I only wished we had seen more of a stronger Kiranea earlier in the book, and it would have been fun to include a map. Maybe in the second book?

The cover is beautiful, and the eBook cover is a special delight, in that it has falling snow. Readers can download it for free from his website.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves an epic fantasy filled with battles, romance, seers, kings and minstrels. The world in From a Broken Land is an adventure from a writer I think we’ll soon hear more about.

Listen to the very opening lines of this mysterious, powerful tale: The mist moved, and the world moved with it. It drifted between trees and along well-worn pathways, across rivers and the chatter of brooks, and through hamlet and city alike. The reader may think like this carefully crafted opening is merely to lure readers into buying the book, but the truth is that you cant stop reading. You are drawn into the book with this sense of something extraordinary, drifting in the air you breathe, something sinister --- and it is really sinister. Immediately, your curiosity is awakened. You want to find out what it is. Such is the atmosphere that permeates the gripping story in From a Broken Land, the first and brilliant opening to The Broken Throne series by William R. Herr.

Fate brings together two unusual characters and puts them before challenges and a power they never could have imagined. Gidon the Sidhean is traveling to accomplish an impossible mission among his own, sent by the Church to get the help of a group of Seers. It is on this mission that he meets Kira, a young woman of noble birth running away from a marriage she doesn't want. They are both watched by something so powerful it could be the cause of the downfall of humanity itself. William R. Herr is an author that I root for and his seductive writing, the powerful descriptions, and the strong plot points will keep your eyes riveted on the pages of this book. Prepare to enter into a dark and frightening world.

Gidon has been sent on a mission to discover the cause of the blight plaguing the land. He doesn’t expect to come home alive, but things never quite turn out the way you plan. All he is trying to do is find the local Seer, not join the local Guard or meet the most enchanting woman he has ever seen...in his limited experience growing up in a monastery, of course. Surely she could not help him accomplish his mission, but why won’t she leave?

From a Broken Land is Book one in the Broken Throne series, and it does a great job of setting the scene and explaining some of the politics and back story of the fictional countries of Sidhea and Hammat without resorting to long monologuing or awkward exposition. The main characters of Gidon and Kira were developed well, as were some of the more interesting aspects of this world’s spiritual realm, such as the extremely binding nature of oaths. I thought it was a really well done first book in a series and look forward to reading more soon!

This book remind me of George R. R. Martin's work. The world-building is fabulous--deep and intense. Everything about it is well-developed: religions, races, clothing, cultures, etc. You can fully immerse yourself in this world in no time.

There is much action in this book, which will keep you turning pages to see how it is going to play out. Seeing as how this is the first book in a series, not all of the action gets tied up by the end, so there are cliffhangers to keep you waiting for the next release.

You can tell from this book that this world has MANY more stories to tell, and I look forward to reading them.

From a Broken Land (The Broken Throne) by William R. Herr is a great debut novel and one that must be read. The imagery was so good it makes you feel as though you are a part of the story. Once you begin reading it's hard to put it down until you have finished reading it. This book would make a great addition to your book shelf. It would also make a fantastic gift to anyone who enjoys reading fantasy and supernatural. I gave this 5 stars but it clearly deserves many more. I highly recommend this to everyone and I wait for more great reads from William R. Herr.

There might be some SPOILERS. You've been warned.

I really liked this book. REALLY liked this book. It's that perfect mix of adventure, fantasy, supernatural mystery, blended mythology, and dash of romance.

Blurb (from Amazon.com): Kiranae is a girl in flight, carried through the mists to escape a marriage she cannot abide.
Together, they are thrust into war, intrigue, and impossible love, never realizing that their lives are part of a larger, and darker, plan.

Why I picked it up: The author gave me a signed copy at a convention almost a year ago, and I felt it was about time I read it.

Thoughts:
Prepare your brain, cus the first few pages are a trip. However, they make sense as the story goes forward.

I have a whole host of positives, so I'll do the negatives first:
Grammar and punctuation. I found errors, and those who know me know they can distract me from a story. I tried very hard to ignore them.
YES, that was it!

Positives:
Characters - these are not paper cut-outs. They are fleshed out, complex, three dimensional people with conflicting priorities and emotions. I really liked watching how they grew and evolved, and I'm looking forward to how they change in the next book. Though, I'm not a fan of Tertoillane. Nor of the Countess, though I can see more reason for her presence that the minstrel. Maybe I'll change my mind after the second book.
Description- vivid, easy to visualize, balanced between what sits in what direction and the more immediate surroundings of the characters, just enough of the characters themselves to get dominant characteristics but leave them open to reader interpretation (yes, I ignored the picture on the cover). Loved the expounded descriptions of the blight and its random effects.
Battle - lots of this, doesn't lose sight of who turned what direction or which arm moved. Very much enjoyed Bergeran's moment in the final battle. Rest assured, the guy he kills totally deserves it.
Mythology - Herr pulls from a variety of sources, but it's its own contained religion within the story, just different enough from the ones I know of to be distinct. Has it's own scriptures, prophets, allegories, etc. If you're a gamer, it's like Dragon Age and the Chantry.
Supernatural mystery - magic ABOUNDS in this novel, and the rules are sometimes what we expect, and sometimes not. Gideon and others are partly initiated in its workings, but there are other aspects that remain hidden no matter how hard they search. The secrets each character carries is a heavy driver for the plot.
Romance - develops slowly, largely because of other problems facing Gideon and Kira, but is (hopefully?) delayed because of Gideon's position of authority - she's his recruit, a soldier under his command, and he's an honorable man. To succumb to his emotions toward her would appear to others as if he took advantage of her, or worse, coerced her against her will.

SO! Clearly I recommend buying the book b/c it's worth it.

Fantasy and Gothic Horror? Yes please!

The author lays out a story of both Fantasy and Gothic Horror that I expect will get better as the books continue. I'm intrigued by the mystery, and the world is drawn in with just enough description to get a good feel for it, but I don't really like the main character. At first he didn't seem to have any depth other than his mission, but he's grown on me some by the end.

I really enjoyed this book. I think this novel potentially fits many genres. However, I primarily consider it to be a unique historical fiction/fantasy novel. Props to the Mr. Herr for inventing creative names for people, places and things many of which I almost thought were real!! This really adds to the authenticity of the historical fiction. Throughout the novel, the author employs an excellent use of imagery. This book has the best use of imagery that I have read in quite a while! However, I think this may have affected the pace of the novel a bit. I wish that part II which officially introduces the warring tribes (Sidhean and Hammat) that are central to the main plot was presented as part I or that part I and II were integrated in some way. I think this would have helped me follow the novel better. There are also some minor facts that were unclear in the beginning. However, the later parts were helpful for clarifying. Overall, this is an excellent book and I highly recommend it. It is not a light read and requires your undivided attention. I look forward to reading the second book and hope Mr. Herr will further develop the entertaining characters and complex plot lines!

From a Broken Land is the first book in William R. Herrs The Broken Throne series and his debut novel as well. A fantasy adventure in a land erupting in war as two young lovers find each other and are put on a path of adventure. Only their entire meeting was set in stone before they even met. This isnt fate but two who have been thrust together as pawns in someone elses scheme.

Gidon, a messenger meets a young woman named Kiranae who is on the run to escape a marriage she had no say in. The two end up together as the world around them is falling apart as part of a much longer plot.

There is some great character development, action, and story that can be found in these pages. However, this being Herr's debut novel does show in a few instances. A few passages I felt there were details that were quite painstakingly added in with more description than necessary and took away from the story.

Also when those known as Seers would communicate it felt off. That being said, it was still a very enjoyable book and I'm eager to read both more about the world that Herr has created and to see how his writing style evolves.

William R. Herr’s debut novel, From a Broken Land, was a great read and exciting setup for what promises to be an engaging fantasy book series.

For fans of mystical adventures, this is a treat. The slow reveal of the mysteries surrounding the hero, Gidon, and the horrific blight that threatens to destroy everything in its path, introduces us to an intricately built world of prophecies, shadows and mist. The diverse characters are readily recognizable, yet individual and fully developed. The story builds to an exciting climax full of action and just the right amount of romance.

Gidon is a true, reluctant hero who doubts his own gifts and abilities. He is likeable from the start, but as his confidence grows, he remains an honorable man, worthy of his new found authority.

Kira, the feisty, courageous princess, is a wonderful female character full of depth, spunk and all the heroic characteristics young women need to read about - a terrific role model.

I’m eager to see what Mr. Herr comes up with next. Great job! I truly enjoyed your book.

William R. Herr does a fantastic job of not only creating an incredible story that anyone would want to be apart of, but creating a land full of mysteries and adventure that will draw in even the most picky readers. Setting up a world that any author would be jealous of and any reader would want to be a part of. Every character is wonderfully diverse and getting to know each ones back story as the story progresses is a wonderful treat. Every twist and turn that comes about just draws the reader in the story more, making them beg for more knowledge about even the most simple of topics and Herr delivers in every way. "From A Broken Land" is one of the most intriguing first novels and sets the reader up to be begging for more before the story has even ended. Herr keeps the reader so entranced with the land and story that you never want the book to end, but "From A Broken Land" leaves you completely satisfied (but that won't make waiting for the sequel any easier).

A strong debut novel in a new epic fantasy series, Will Herr creates an intriguing and well-developed cast of characters in a realm where the mist is alive with secrets. Part coming of age story, part mystical mystery tour, From a Broken Land is a well-written page turner worthy of the classic fantasists.

The novel does not dwell on details or linger on its own clever world-building. Instead it tells a story with creativity and economy which will appear to both fantasy readers and fans of thrillers. The story holds a steady momentum and is vastly entertaining.

As a lover historical fiction I found this book to be a gateway drug to fantasy. The initial feel is very realistic as the characters unfold but soon magic and adventure reveals its self. With both male and female heronies this book touches on all levels of power dynamics and inteliect. Already looking forward to the next book in the series!
