One more Brady Bunch joke, and I swear I will ugly cry in the corner! Dad took seven years after Mom died to find the right woman. My stepmom is nice. I have no complaints but one. Like Dad, she has three daughters. If math is your defect, that’s six teenage girls in one house. At least, we have a new house, but we also have a forced bonding project. It’s not a camping weekend—that’d be lame, but short. We have to share our craft and creative skills as a group to help each other with stuff. That’s what I get for offering to help with decorating this drab house. Even worse, it has to be recorded for the parents. Add that to school, boys, friends, and our own stuff…when am I supposed to have any fun? I’m glad Dad is happy, but the sister explosion was never in the plan. I’m the oldest. I’m hoping a stepmom will free me from being mini mom. Maybe I’ll find the freedom to pursue my art, spend time with some interesting guys, and enjoy what’s left of high school.
Writer of YA…currently DIY Dolls contemp with intrigue and romance. She loves meeting readers, binge watching TV shows, wasting time watching YouTube, writing as much as possible, and making up stuff. Cats over dogs. Chocolate over vanilla. Lime over lemon…gotta make decisions!
I am a fan of this author's books. However, the name I know this author under is Cheryl Dragon. She writes erotica novels. I can barely remember a book that I have read that I did not like. So, when I got the chance to read this book I jumped at the chance. Yet, you could call me very curious about this book. I wanted to see how Ms. Dragon aka Ms. Oblon was at writing YA books. Well I am happy to report that Ms. Oblon can write YA books.
In the beginning I was team Chloe but then I quickly got on team Cat's side. However in the end I was on both of these girls sides (ok, may still a fan of Cat's more). The reason for this is because I found Cat to be a strong leader. She is smart, caring, and a bit sassy. Although, I liked Chloe's artist view point on life. While she may have been a little naïve, she grew stronger herself for it. Another thing that I liked about this book is the blended family and that everyone from the rest of the family to Cat and Chloe's friends all had voices in the story. I pictured Chloe's gay friend, Kyle to be more outgoing and full of personality, so I was disappointed that he was not. I have hung out with several gay friends who were like this so I am used to this type of personality. They are so much fun to be around. I can't wait to read the second book in this series which is Cat's story.
Starting out I really had hopes for this story. I love a good YA but I feel that there was something missing.
The story follows Chloe. A teenage girl whose had a comfortable/rich lifestyle. Though she has lost her mother. She took more of the role, since her father worked so much. Then one day her father meets Nat, falls in love and gets married. So they combine both household naturally. So six teenage girls in one house. Cat is the oldest and becomes her roomie.
The writing for me, was ok and I think that this could be a really great story. It was a bit on the over descriptive side. There are some things that turned me off a bit. I love that she mentions that both of the girls have gay best friends. But I'm not understanding the modern/vintage thing. It's like their sexuality put them in this other world. And I get their teenagers, but I was not impressed at all by Chloe.
I don't think this is the story for me. I'm sure plenty will find it great. I don't ever like giving two star reviews but I had to be honest with myself. There may be great lessons to learn throughout. I mean they had to come together and eventually really became a family....Lissa
I would like to say up front that I was given a copy for review by the author. It is not a book I would typically choose to red but I was pleasantly surprised. Once I started reading it, I really liked it and didn't want to stop. At the end, I felt like I wanted to pick up the next installment and keep reading. Chloe is a 16 year old girl that has been a mother figure to 2 younger sisters since their mother had passed away. Suddenly everything is about to change when her father marries a woman with e teenage daughters of her own creating a "Brady Bunch". The story goes through how strange it is to suddenly share a room and be sisters with someone you don't know. Luckily things work out family wise and Cat and Chloe become friends and family life seems to work out well but you know this is a book and things are not going to be quiet and happy. School proves to be a much tougher place to get under control for the new sisters. Not only do Chloe and Cat become forced together at home but now their friends and school get blended. There are also some dramatic real life issues that come up such as drugging and rape, but it is nice to read how the sisters come together to deal with what may seem hopeless at the time. The girls and their friends and family are all well developed and likable characters. The conversations are smooth and believable. Overall, I really liked the book and despite being a YA genre book, I would read the following books in the series.
So this will be a series? Hmm. Not sure how I feel about that.
There seems to be an identity crisis in the novel as I was reading the beginning expecting one thing (a very static girl-story about family) and then was catapulted into darker themes of rape, while still being distracted by all the family dynamics. Yes, an identity crisis.
Chloe is the main character, while Cat, her stepsister is now in the picture, along with four other sisters after Chloe's father remarries after the death of the mother and he finds Nat, who also has three daughters. Their family blends, they have odd ways to blend their family that deal with decorating and parenting. Then trials and tribulations push Chloe and Cat together to strengthen their bond.
It's quite possible that I'm not an uber-fan of chicklit stories, though I do enjoy some. Maybe it's because I don't have sisters and am raising boys that I don't understand sister stories (see my comments about To All the Boys I've Loved Before), but there was a confusion as to what the story was really about that had me scratching my head rather than truly enjoying the story.
Chloe Seaburn gets a new family which includes three sisters when her dad marries again years after her mother's death. Chloe is hoping her stepmom will step up and relieve her of mini-mom duty. Chloe has to share a room with her new stepsister Cat. Cat has very rigid ideas about money and food. As Cat and Chloe learn to get along with one another a new problem arises in the form a boy named Diego. Chloe has admired Diego as an artist for a really long time. Cat warns Chloe that Diego is bad news and not to get involved with him no matter how much she admired his art. The parents think that all the girls should help decorate their new home to reflect each of their personalities which leads to the inevitable clash between the girls over what they want. Can they learn to be a family? Will they accept one another? Your answers await you in Sunflower Touches.
This new to me author really had the voice of a teenager to present this book so beautifully. As mother of three teenagers I could definitely relate to this story and situations. Definitely looking forward to more from this author in the future.
I LOVED this book, and can't wait to read more in the series. It's definitely not the Brady Bunch, for sure. It's a more realistic look at two families blending, and six girls trying to find a way to get along.
One of the first differences that rears its head is how the families look at money. Chloe has no problem buying tablets and vanities for her new sisters, and making sure everyone had top quality hair products and feminine products. Cat is more frugal, and would be happy with the status quo.
The parents decide that the six girls should work together to decorate their home, reflecting each of their personalities--and that the entire process should be recorded. That shouldn't cause any problems, right? LOL
Having raised three children, and survived, I found this author to have a truly authentic teen voice. I'm looking forward to learning more about this family in future books!

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Review of Sunflower Touches. . . I am not sure if I could push on with a new family being blended with three new females. Now giving the already estrogen filled home seven females to cope with. Not without pulling some hair out and maybe even kicking a little but along the way. The one really good thing was getting a friend and a sister that could understand you.
Chloe has some giving up and growing up to do. She has a newly blended family where she is no longer the woman of the house. She has new younger sisters that she need to set an example for and care for. She has a new mother figure in the home and need to give up some of the responsibilities of everyday. She needs to allow someone in to help her and care for her. With young romance on the horizon, she needs to take all the help she can get.

"Love hits you like a bus. Hopefully, it's the right one." Sunflower Touches is a story of how opposites attract, and making a blended family work. Chloe has been the "woman of the house" since her mom died, and is looking forward to having some of the burdon of taking care of her younger sisters lifted when her dad re-marries. But sometimes giving up old habits can cause friction, and Chloe must work on being a big sister to the new additions to the family, as well as allowing new family members take care of her.
Would recommend this story to those who enjoy contemporay YA reads.
Fav quote:
"I mastered the ice queen mode when my mom died. Sometimes, the emotion was too much and you didn't want to let everyone see you crumble. It worked...I put it on like a second skin."
I won this book in a goodreads giveaway and I was extremely excited when I got it as is the first book I've won in a giveaway! The saying don't judge a book by it's cover is very relevant to this book. When you first see the cover it looks like a cute fun book, and while this book was enjoyable, it covered many darker subjects that I wasn't expecting.
Enjoyable YA story about a two families with sisters who must learn to become a part a large family after their parents marry. This is about the eldest sister but you meet all the others and the second oldest is a big part of this story. I really enjoyed getting into the dynamics of the sisters as they learn about each other.
Provided by instafreebie. Family went from 3 to 6 girls with the marriage of their parents. Tension between 2 oldest when one warns other about a boy but will not confide why. Good teen insight but not for young teens because of subjects.
