The author did a fantastic job on the agent/business end of this story. The buildup of moves approaching the draft and thereafter was very well done. As our heroine, Sloane Ashford works for her father’s agency but has to battle him at every turn for her clients.

”I refuse to give up because I knew going into this job that you were going to be big one day, and I wanted to be the one to help make that happen for you.” For both of us.”

I found Sloane to be smart and a very strong character. Even though Sloane and Trey do cross a line with their relationship they do try to keep it professional. Sadly the love aspect of this story never got there for me. I think the hero trusted her and relied on her but love…the author just didn’t get me there.

Still, the plot was entertaining regarding all the power play moves that goes into making a NFL player.

Rookie Mistake is book one in the Offensive Line series by Tracey Ward. I read this as part of a series box set but the books are also available individually. I’ve been telling myself I wanted to read more football romance and have had this series for quite awhile so it’s the perfect fit.

Trey Domato, who was the star quarterback at UCLA, was cool as ice on the field and made a name for himself. Enough to catch the attention of an up and coming agent who has just been waiting for him to graduate so she can sign him. Trey grew up as an only child to loving parents but they always struggled to get by. Trey’s dream, his absolute need is to make it in the first round draft pick, to get drafted to a team with a big enough paycheck to ensure that his parents won’t have to struggle anymore.

Sloanne Ashford grew up at the knee of her father who is a big time sports agent. It’s all she’s ever known, always dreaming of working at her father’s side. Only the dream hasn’t quite worked as well as she might have imagined. She’s working for her father, yes. But he keeps her under his thumb. Undermines her at every turn. I have very strong feelings about this man, and not in a kind way, but I’ll leave that for you to decide.

Sloanne has watched Trey his entire college career. She has memorized ever stat, every play. She has always known he was meant to be her client. When they meet in person for the first time, though, there is something more there between them. Something that sizzles and sparks. But something that cannot happen. It would ruin her reputation if anyone found out. Not to mention that it’s just wrong. But they can’t seem to remember the rules whenever they’re in the room together.

As Trey’s name becomes more and more well known, so do the problems that come with that. But Sloanne is there for him every step of the way. Somehow always knowing just what he needs.

I really enjoyed this but I didn’t warm up to the two of them as fast as I would have liked. Sloanne was tough and smart and knew what she was doing. She had to fight so hard for herself and for Trey. I guess there were just a couple of things that I didn’t love that happened. But, still, I enjoyed the story and the ending was great. I really loved her best friend and co-worker, Hollis. And I’m enjoying getting to know Trey’s teammates, one of which will be the focus of the next book, Sugar Rush. It’s Trey’s teammate, Colt’s book and I’m super excited to read it.

What's What

She's his sports agent.

He's her NFL client.

^So^ a relationship is a no-go.

Her dad is a greedy crooked ass and her boss.

He has panic attacks that are only soothed
by music or screwing.

How can they have each other and their careers?

"Rookie Mistake" ... More Like Rookie Book.

Bottom line .... It's unlikeable. Here's why.

• I start bored. I stay bored. I end bored. There aren't any peaks and valleys in the plot and character develop. It's all monotone and flat.

• What little secondary plot is here is asinine and solved too easily - abortion threat, panic attacks, injury, etc. Much ado.

• Both MCs are sleeping with each other & people all the way to 65-70%.

• Sex scenes fade to black after first or second base. No heat. No umph. No sexy times. Blah.

• The sports inner workings (the character's jobs) are too in depth, too draggggggged out, and occur too often. Very "Show me the money" And, I typically love reading the sports mojo part of sports romance. Not here, however.

• The female MC "smells manly" because she wears Old Spice deodorant. Eek, okay~ no comment.

• The transition from fuck buddies to love just comes out of clouds.

• Characters don't appeal to me on any level - personally, professionally, romantically, nada.

• All the way through the book, he treats her, who is supposed to be special, just like all the other "drugs" he used sexually to defuse his panic attacks, even if he says she was medical grade compared to them. <<< That doesn't differentiate their romance from all the others.

• The end is kinda a HFN situation where they are just dating. They still live separate and make no commitments or proclamations past the "I love you."

Bottom Line

Very simplistic and mediocre story that had a flat, monotone delivery. Add in the distaste of having the MCs still screwing other people at 65-70% and after they've been with each other, and it's just a bust for me.

This book was such a fun surprise for me! Rookie Mistake was my first book by Tracey Ward, but I am definitely going to dive back in for more!

I am a football junkie. I love the boys of fall and everything surrounding the sport itself. There's a lot of football in this book - which is likely off-putting to some, but it was smack dab in the middle of my wheelhouse.

Also in my wheelhouse? The sexy, sweet, passionate romance between Trey and Sloane. I loved them! I bought into their chemistry and I loved their easy banter. I loved the strong, sharp minded heroine and the more emotion driven hero. I didn't always love the twists and turns that their story took, but I loved their dynamic when they were together. And falling into this story was so effortless for me - it flowed so smoothly and I really enjoyed the time I got to spend with these characters.

That said, it wasn't a perfect reading experience. I felt like I would have liked a deeper dive into their emotions. The ending felt a little abrupt and I felt like there were so many loose ends that didn't get tied off. It just fell a little bit flat - but not enough that it impacted my enjoyment of the story - or that it felt like a chore to read. I still enjoyed the book a lot. I loved the writing style and the storytelling - it drew me in, held my attention, and captured my heart - no easy feat these days! As a series starter, this was a super solid foundation and I can't wait to follow more of the series from here! ~ Shelly, 4 stars

Before I review this book, I need to say what lead me to read it. I've never read Tracey Ward before I stumbled upon book 2 in this series. I didn't pay close enough attention to see it was book 2 in a series and read it first. I loved book 2. Colt Avery was hot and charismatic. Lilley was standoffish and he had to work for her attention. I like it when the guy has to chase the girl. I'm not a big fan of the other way around. Best of all, Colt didn't sleep with any other girl once he met Lilly. That was icing on the cake.

Now the reason I talk so much about book 2 is that's why I had to go back to book 1 and read it. After reading two books of Tracey Wards, I can say I'm definately a fan. Book 1 was good. But I had to lower the rating to 4 stars instead of 5 because of a personal issue I have with romance novels. They both slept with other people after they got together. They couldn't be a couple at the time so it wasn't cheating, but I still didn't like it.

Ok so that's the negative, the rest is all positive. Sloane was bad ass! She had to prove her worth as an agent due to working under her father. A father that treated her pretty badly. I loved how smart Sloane is. How she wheeled and dealed with all these professional men to make a dream come true for Trey. Not only Trey but any athlete she felt deserved it. It was beautiful to watch...well, to read. I'm a fan and anxious to read book 3. I just hope the other woman/men are not an issue in book 3.

Nailed it!!!!
OMG I hoped that this book would never end. It was so awesome. I even loved Sloane, maybe a little more than Trey. I know, it's sacrilegious. But she was a tough cookie. And I can't not love such a strong woman. They were perfect together.
It was such a fun book to read. But it ended pretty fast and now I need more. I can't wait for Colt's story.

So here’s the thing I’ve discovered about sports romance. Sometimes you get to the end and you think: “hang on, there was supposed to be sport in that!” Because ultimately, I want to become immersed in the energy of competitive sport and the drama both on AND off the playing field. This is where Tracey Ward absolutely gets it 100% right. I’m not from the U.S so my knowledge of American Football is pretty limited. But I can tell you, I was THERE, I was totally in the moment, with every pass, every play, every breath our hero takes, the authenticity is truly a credit to this writer.
Rookie Mistake follows the lives of Trey Domata and Sloane Ashford. Trey is about to enter the NFL draft and Sloane is the sports agent who battles to help make their dreams come true. Drama unfolds in the shape of a broken hand, a D*^K of a father, a best friend hiding his sexuality, family responsibilities and a love that demands both Trey and Sloane let their guards down and trust each other enough to give their love a chance.
The characters drive this story and their natural dialogue is flawless. I believed in Trey and Sloane’s story and I couldn’t help but fall in love the supporting characters too. Figures and toes crossed Hollis and a few of Trey’s teeammates get a well-deserved spotlight as this series continues.
I was in book heaven from start to finish. Tracey Ward masterfully captures the feelings, romance and the cheeky sexiness of the New Adult genre in Rookie Mistake. It is honestly one of the best sports romances I've ever read. I giggled, I swooned and I couldn't put it down. Ms Ward has broken my 5 star drought! Thank you!! I can already tell this will be one of my favourite reads of 2016.

Being a sports fan Draft day isn't unfamiliar to me. I don't know everything that goes behind the scenes but we know there's always rumors and other things that affect it before or after. Negotiations, trades and picks are part of the deal. I liked that aspect it appealed to me.

While NFL Draft isn't something I tune into or watch intently I've seen it on TV and social media. I'm not aware the goings-on. One thing is for sure I just realized how cutthroat sports agents world can be.

Tracy Ward did a good job representing and showing it as accurate as possible. I like this forbidden romance between agent and client I'm not sure how possible it can be in reality but it was definitely entertaining and charming. The heroine a strong career woman which is refreshing and not boring at all. A new comer football hero on the cusp of super starfom. Fans of NFL and sports romance will surely enjoy this one. A superb start to a new series and I look forward to the next one.

2.5 - 3 stars.
A female Jerry McGuire with a gifted QB out of college. It was a nice enough story but I was turned off by both mc have other partners before and after being together. Also the mc's were not that emotionally invested so that takes out the romance part for me. Not really that satisfied with the ending like what happened to Demarcus? And most importantly what happened to Sloane and Trey? What I liked about the story was how the h was with her clients and the way she fights for them and make things happen.

Why did I read this so fast?! :(

As soon as I knew this book was even a thing I knew I wanted to read it. Tracey Ward has solidly became one of my favorite authors and then she hits me with a sports romance! Football isn't my game but I don't think you need to know much or anything at all about football to understand what's going down. I loved Sloane because she knows her stuff and she's kinda badass. And the best part is she doesn't lose a bit of that being with Trey. I like badass heroines but so many books change them once a guy comes along and that bothers me so much so I'm glad that didn't happen. I'm a sucker for secondary characters and Hollis didn't disappoint. I hope he gets a story eventually cause he's great. Brad is a horrible person! Tracey did her job cause oh boy do I hate him! I hope karma really starts to rip him a new one cause he's so far gone from that little snippet of a decent person we saw. I'm so sad I read this so fast cause now it's back to waiting.

What a really fabulous read, I loved that it was so very focused in on the draft yet we still got some great sports action. The only down side was I felt at times the story was a bit face paced, jumping from one point in time to another, and left me feeling like parts of the story was missing, scenes between Sloane and Trey and the build up completely left out and I would have loved to seen them. For me those jumps and missing parts were what took this book from being 5 star to being 4 star for me. It was truly a fabulous story I could it put down it just left me wanting more so many times through out the story, wanting to see more parts of their relationship developing

This book was really nothing special for me. It was a cute way to pass the time, but the beginning of it really dragged on a lot! I started getting a little more into it around the 50 percent mark, but still nothing real page turning til about 70 percent. At that point I found myself interested in how it was all going to play out. While it had a nice happy ending, I would have liked a little more information about how things went down. Sloane came up with kind of a badass plan to fix everything, and we got the end of a chapter, then a recap in the next chapter from her POV! I really would have liked more from that! It was the most exciting part of the story! I think her dad is a pretty skeevy dude and deserved what happened.

The connection between these two was also pretty luke-warm. I know she's been after him and wanted to sign him for years, but I felt like she was a little more Fangirl than sports agent... I mean what sports agent knows your bird died and that's why you were moody and lost a game? That's full Fangirl status borderline stalker; not in a weird creepy sense, just way more invested than necessary.

Overall, pretty cute, but prob would have rated it a little lower if I didn't like the end.

This book was my first book by author Tracey Ward, but it won't be my last. I liked the author's writing style, her characters and her knowledge of the game. It shows through the pages that she loves the sport, the technical aspects of the sport and that she put her everything into the book. There were a few spelling errors, punctuation errors and wrong words used, but overall it didn't disturb the reader too much.

The characters were compelling, they grabbed the readers attention and never let it go. The story was a bit rushed at times and then at times it seemed a bit too stuffed with fluff. I felt like the relationship progressed so quickly that the author had to add a bit of filler to make up the word count.

Overall a good book and an author that I already one-clicked book 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of....

I liked it but it was like a non ending. Yes, they are together but as what? Plus he was with other women after her which is a turn off for me. And she had to see pictures of it in the paper. I mean really? She was with one guy after him, months after he was whoring around, and he gets all upset and comes to her home. Really dude? No. I like that she is so serious and jumps ship from her dad and that job but I wish it had been different while they were apart.

Rookie Mistake was fantastic! It felt like the first hardcore NA novel from TW. She's had YA and coming of age, with some sex and language in it, but this was far more NA than even Lawless was. It wasn't over the top with sex scenes every other page though. You really get a feel for the characters and understand them. There is sex, but it's secondary to the character development. It was a perfect mix.

Trey Domato, oh... Trey. Tracey writes wonderful male lead characters, and this is no exception. Trey is the next big QB coming out of college going into the NFL. He breaks his hand toward the end of the season and his NFL career isn't so certain for him anymore. He is lost with what to do. Enter Sloane, the sports agent recently assigned to him, to help him find his way.

Sloane works for her dad, the owner of one of the biggest sports agencies, and is trying to get out of his limelight. She yearns to be successful in her own right. She battles to get Trey signed, even though his draft chances aren't a given any longer with his injury. She fights to get him through this tumultuous time.

What follows is a lot of laugh out loud, witty banter between two fully lovable characters. I love a lot of Tracey's characters, but I don't know that I have ever loved the male and female equally as much. Usually one stands out to me more than the other. Not in Rookie Mistake. I loved them both. These two were made for each other. I giggled, I snorted, I laughed until people around me tossed funny looks. I didn't care. It felt real with sarcasm, coarse language, and comical sparring.

TW always has some humor in her books. There are always funny jokes and scenes and banter. This one is my favorite in that aspect though. It never stopped. The banter in it was her best yet.

Even if you aren't a sports fan or more specifically an NFL fan, you will adore this book. Sloane is feisty and passionate. Trey is such a good guy- great heart, great soul. I cannot wait for more novels in this series. Tracey's books are always read ASAP books for me. Forget anything else, that book comes out, I will not stop until it's finished. I started with Tracey back with her first novel, and continue still for a reason. She is awesome!

Maybe because I am not a young but her NA writing is her best yet. Sports books generally aren't something I gravitate toward. I love the NFL and sports but I don't usually read about them. I read more second chance romance NA novels if I am reading romance. When Tracey announced this though, I didn't care, I knew I would read it ASAP, and now I cannot wait for more. Pick up any of Tracey's books- you will fall in reading love. She has something for everyone- YA, NA, end of the world catastrophe, romance, etc. etc. Grab one and get to reading!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review, but I would have one-clicked this book (or any by Tracey) without an ARC. She's a must read author every time for me.

Ms. Ward continues to prove why she is one of my favorite authors. When I heard she was writing a new series I was excited. Add a sports theme with hot football players, and you've got me counting down the days until it's release. Lucky for me I was able to get an early copy of this book and let me tell you I loved it.
Right from page one I was immersed in the story of Trey and Sloane. The progression of not only the storyline but the romance was done perfectly and not once felt cheesy or over the top. These two struggled with their feelings and often denied what they truly wanted.
Sloan is such an incredible heroine; She was bold, sarcastic and didn't take crap from anyone. I adored her. She takes her job as an agent very seriously and I respected her a lot by the end of this book. Tracey has a great talent to write amazing heroines and Sloan became one of my favorites of hers. Total girl crush!
Trey isn't just your typical jock but has a big heart and puts everyone he cares about (including his teammates) above himself. The struggles he faced I could really relate to from personal experience and knowing how hard that is to go through. His life isn't just about making money and getting girls (although he does that lol) but making a living to take care of the ones he loves. How could you not fall for this guy?!
The supporting cast was one of the best things in this story.
Hollis in particular is my favorite and I really, really hope Ms. Ward writes a story for him. If not to get more scenes with him and Sloan. Their exchanges were hilarious.
As you can see from this long review I loved Rookie Mistake. It truly has it all; sports, romance, humor and of course angst. I can't wait for more in this series and can't recommend this or Tracey Ward's books enough. 5 Stars!

Rookie Mistake is Tracey Ward's first book in the Offensive Line series. Trey Domato, superstar heisman winning quarterback, is entering the NFL draft. Sloane Ashford, professional sports agent, had her sights on signing Trey for four years. She knows everything there is to know about Trey and is willing to fight for him.

Ward weaves us through the daily challenges of a sports agent working in a family agency, a high ranked NFL draft candidate, and the dynamics building up to as well as during draft day. The underlying current within the story has Trey and Sloane fighting the attraction between them as a conflict of interest.

I loved Trey and Sloane. Both are incredibly likable, straight forward, strong, intelligent, and sexy. Ward also revealed flaws and weaknesses of each, which endeared them to me even more. However, I didn't feel a strong connection between them outside of a deep friendship until the last few pages. I did however see the budding friendship; she grounded him and provided the calmness he needed. I desired additional depth and character development throughout the storyline for a realistic build up for transitioning from friends to soul mates.

Otherwise, I loved the storyline. Ward did an excellent job providing depth and development into their jobs and the sports world. It was entertaining, enlightening and provided a strong foundation for Trey and Sloane's journey to love.

Ward also charmed us with a great supporting cast of characters. There are multiple opportunities for future books in the Offensive Line series. All in all, an enjoyable read. I look forward to Colt Avery's story in the next book of the series, Sugar Rush.

I'm thinking 5.5 stars. 6 Stars.

This has got to be the best NA book from Tracey Ward so far. Trey Domata is a quarterback and Sloane is a sports agent. It's sexy, sure, but it's also a lot more than that. It is smart, with fully fleshed out characters with flaws intact. It is incredibly well researched. I find that in most NA or even smutty book that the MC always has some PR job, I don't believe it for a second. Ward has made Sloane not only live and breathe her job, but has made her believably capable, effective, and truly strong-willed. You can almost taste Sloane's frustration as a woman in a male-dominated field. I can believe every word she says.

This is no fairytale romance either. The realism in Trey's interior fears and coping mechanisms is above par. Ward has made him sexy as all get out, but has also made him a real person as well. There is no knight in shining armour here. There is just a guy watching his lady kick ass even if he wants to be the one doing it.

And man, the supporting characters. I say it every time when it comes to Tracey Ward, she makes them interesting, lovable, and irritating but not intrusive or distruptive to the story. Though, most of the time I like them so much, that I want their story as well as whatever I'm reading. This is not a problem I mind having.

Read this book. Funny, sexy, smart, interesting, you need this book.

4.5 stars- A football romance heavy on the football

I've liked Tracey Ward's books since Knockout. Her romances are exactly as she says, a little messy, but very honest. I like grit, I like when things aren't straight forward and couples have to fight to stick together, so I'm a fan. I'm also a major football fan, and I really appreciated that this football romance contained a lot of the sport. The sports agent and draft angle was unique and interesting. However, my favorite part of the book was the characters. I love strong females, and Sloane was definitely that. She owned her professional success and her sexuality, she wasn't the inexperienced, weak heroine so common in contemporary romances. I found Trey charming and his struggles made him relatable. His flaws were unexpected, and it captured my interest immediately. The banter between characters was great, the sexual tension and chemistry palpable. My only complaint is I wish we had one more chapter with Trey and Sloane together as the couple. We got the answers, but I wished we had seen it a bit more "first-hand". The only other reason I didn't give 5 stars is I saw some editing errors. They weren't excessive or disruptive, but they were noticeable. That said, I'll definitely be reading more of this series.

So many more than 5 stars!!!

If your a sports fans than this may be the best book you ever read! Trey Domato is a college football star entering the NFL Draft and Sloane Ashford is who every huge, female football fan wants to be...an agent in a top sport's agency.

Sloane has been following Trey's career for as long as he has been throwing a ball and this is the moment she has been waiting for. Except, her boss (and dad) is not on Board. Sloane goes out on a limb to get Trey signed to the company and get him on the team he wants to play for.

Trey is about as modest as they come and has worked his whole life to make it in the NFL. He does have a secret that could complicate his career and Sloane just may be what he needs to get past it.

This story goes back and forth between Trey and Sloane's POV through his draft journey. Lots of unpredictable events and JUST SO GOOD!

I discovered this author by chance, reading the comments of current-read shelf Goodreads' friends, so I bought it and I read it.
Being honest at first I thought the story was slow but I liked the atmosphere in which it developed so I wanted to know how I was going to finish it.

The characters are strong, making mistakes appropriate to their ages, and although they have the well furnished head, do things which maybe they regret...just a little for 2 seconds .

I loved the scene in the Draft, for me it is the best plot of the book.

I recommend the book for peronas who like sports, romance and the play between companies and advertising contracts
