AWESOME. I love Pamela Isley's aloofness to most humans, and her compassion for plants and animals. She combats the "pit bulls are evil" stereotype like a champ (Harley would be so proud!). And we even get hints at a secret desire she may have had for some time. Fantastically written Ivy. Gorgeous artwork.
As always, I love Poison Ivy and everything I read about her ever. It's really awesome that they're coming out with more comics with her as the protagonist, usually she's just a side character.
I just discovered this series last week and the second issue is already coming out. It's nice to get some more of the story without having to wait a whole a month. Of course, since I'm caught up now, I'll have t wait a full month for issue #3.
Amy Chu picks the story up in this one with the GCPD at the Botanical Gardens investigating the death of Poison Ivy's mentor. The cause of death was ruled to be poisoning. The plants she had been working with are very poisonous and other scientists keep telling the police it must have been an accident, but those scientists are obviously hiding something and Poison Ivy knows it. Poison Ivy, as her alter ego Pamela Isley, and the dead scientist had been working on a way to splice animal DNA with that of plants. Their research is now missing. Ivy thinks someone she works with knows that Poison Ivy and Pamela Isley are the same person. As she sets out to uncover the mystery of her mentor's death, a policeman on the case develops suspicions of his own.
That mystery is the only thing the writing really has going for it in this issue. For the most part, this issue is rather mundane. There is absolutely no action in this issue. There is a lot of different people standing around talking in this issue. It starts off with the cops talking to all the scientists. Then you have cops talking to each other and scientists talking to each other. Oh, yeah, let's not forget Poison Ivy talking to some plants. Even the dialogue isn't that great. It is as mediocre as the story in this issue. If all stories are divided into 3 Acts, this would be the closing of Act 1 of this 6 issue series. I know it is setting up for the 2nd act, but this issue is just basically just a building block laying foundation for the rest of the story. when all is said and done with issue #6, the overall story may turn out to be great, but this one part is rather slow and boring. Judging this issue alone the writing gets 2.5 stars.
Clay Mann's art doesn't seem quite as breathtaking to me in this issue. It is probably because I just saw the same art for the very first time last week. Don't get me wrong. The art is still extremely fantastic, but when I saw it last week it reminded of seeing a movie like Se7en or Fight Club for the first. I was blown away. Seeing the art in this issue was like watching one of those same movies again for a second. It is still highly enjoyable, but you can never get that mind-blown feeling that you had upon the first viewing back. Ivy continues to look great and the scientist with the purple Mohawk stands out too. Of course, anyone with a purple Mohawk IS trying to stand out. Mann's art gets 5 stars.
The art and writing scores average out to give this issue a 3.75 overall rating. The art continues to be the strongest thing about the book. I will pick up the next 4 issues of this series for that art even if the story doesn't get any better than it is here.
