Disclaimer: I received a free print copy from ECW Press as part of a 49th Shelf giveaway.

A likely 4 stars for someone with market expertise, but 3 stars to someone (like me) with no advance knowledge of Canadian or US markets. So, 3.5 stars.

The brief chapters make the daunting length much easier to manage. However (since different brokers naturally contradict each other at times), the interviews seem to muddy any overriding message (especially since there's no real thesis given). The unavoidable use of jargon makes a lot of the interviews seem similar, so the best moments were those where the interviewees' personalities shone through (Jason Donville, Kiki Delaney, Bill Ackman). The appendices and glossary are certainly helpful, but I still think this may be too "inside baseball" for a general audience.

A great book into the minds of successful investors of all styles, be it value, growth, thematic, or technical, which explains why they succeeded as investors.

The author has also done a great job summarizing master keys which are very thoughtful and useful for those who learn to invest. After all, whichever investment style you choose, you have to be disciplined to succeed.

Only one thing that I was hoping to have Prem Watsa in this collection of thoughts, but it’s not there. Keep it up, Robin! Looks forward to your ‘Next Market Masters’ book, and I hope I could make it there one day.

This book exceeded my expectations. It's hard to write good books about investing. There are many investment philosophies and techniques to cover. It's a highly emotional, somewhat technical subject.

There are many books that compile interviews with great investors, whose authors don't know enough about investing to ask the gurus good questions.

Some of the Canadian portfolio managers featured in this book are my former clients. Others were unknown to me, but author Robin Speziale gathered an eclectic group comprising a wide range of investment styles. He asks good questions. The book is well written and even entertaining.

Speziale interviewed the investors in 2015, when markets felt to some of these experts similar to those in early 2021: quite expensive.

The specific stocks discussed are less important than the experts' investment approach, because we investors need to ask ourselves not what's gone up already, but how to identify which stocks are likely to rise in the future.

Read this book and find an approach that matches your personality, as investor Jason Donville suggests. The explanations are simple to understand. Applying them consistently when your own money is at risk is the challenge, but there's much good stuff here and there's never in history been more financial information at our fingertips, thanks to online resources. Highly recommended.

Thanks to the 49th Shelf and ECW for a free copy of Market Masters.
Although I am interested in dabbling in the stock market, I have little experience or expertise in the area of investing, so I initially cracked open this book with trepidation. First of all, it's a pretty thick book at close to 600 pages and prior reads on the topic have been dry and often on the boring side.
Market Masters isn't like that at all. It was entertaining as well as informative, capturing my interest right from the beginning.
Interviews with close to 30 top Canadian investors are divided into 6 sections and each interview is prefaced with a little glossary and concludes with a summary of key points.
The interviews are easy to understand and effectively blend personal experience with information and advice.
The book is organized cumulatively such that each lesson builds on the one before. So, as the author suggests, I will read through Market Masters a second time to build on the knowledge acquired from the first time around.

This is an INCREDIBLE piece of work. Robin has delved deeply into so many investment styles, showing how they work and why they work with great success. He has picked the brain of some of the strongest leaders in the industry and shows us just how diverse the world of finance and investing can be. The questions he has asked are concise, mind-opening and beyond helpful. He has asked each of the investors some tremendous questions that pertain to their specific background and investment philosophy without any sort of boring repetition from interview to interview. As one makes their way through each interview, one embarks on a new journey, gaining exposure to solid and unique strategies, not to mention varying personalities as well!

At the end, Robin compiles an incredibly satisfying post-interview summary highlighting very important points to set readers up for success. I loved how this book was formatted and organized.

THANK YOU ROBIN SPEZIALE!!!!!!

Near then end of the book, Speziale describes this collection of interviews with some of Canada's leading investment managers as "a recipe book of investing strategies". For the Canadian investor - and investors around the world - Robin Speziale's book will introduce readers to many strategies and approaches to investing in the Canadian markets that can be translated into their own contexts and investing personalities. My scope of investing styles was widened after reading this book, and while some of the strategies may not be a good fit for me, the plethora of investment counsel is worth far more than the book's price.

This is a little too big for me so I started skimming near the end. It has a lot of good stuff in it though but you really need to be into wanting to take care of your own investing. Its convinced me I have no interest in being a money manager. I'll stick with my index funds.

Eric's Notes:
-i5 research
-Index funds and ETF's are still the best way to go for a passive investor like me
-Think about doing the Beat the TSX model
-Check out Purpose Best Ideas Fund from Purpose Investments (copies guys like Buffett who buy and hold for long time)

An excellent buy.

I bought this Kindle book hoping it would live up to the Title. It did not disappoint. It is written in a way that you can pick it up and put it down after each interview. There is a marvellous summary that can be read without reading the entire book. Well done Robin.

I thought this book was very interesting.
This book is pretty thick 600 pages. However
It was so interesting and well laid out that it didn’t feel
Like it was that long of a book at all. I finished quiet
Quickly and I am a lazy reader. I am Proud to have this book on my bookshelf.

This a pretty nifty book. You get a cool sense of how little people who talk about crypto understand investing. You see how your homies on timelines are gambling and that investing is a completely different thing. It was a little old with regards to the examples but really releavant still

Really entertaining read. A lot of other finance books are full of information but dry. For those of you looking to get started in the markets, this is the perfect book for you.

Excellent read, it was a breath of fresh air to cover Canadian investors. Almost felt like I was there watching and listening the interview live. Also, I really enjoyed the break down into sections and styles, it allowed me to pick and choose who to get advice from.
Definitely recommending it to others.
