Mercer Mayer is an American children's author and illustrator. He has published over 300 books, using a wide range of illustrative styles. Mayer is best known for his Little Critter and Little Monster series of books.
I bet this was really fun back when it was first published. My daughter was amused by it, but the poems are mostly obscure ones (to me). And some are even more difficult to understand because Mercer Mayer adds his own characters into the poems. There's a running gag where some characters are looking for someone named Alice, but I don't feel like the punchline payed off in the end. I love Mercer Mayer's artwork,.so that's why this got 3 stars instead of 2.
Picked up at a yard sale because I love Mercer Mayer books. This one however had no point/moral, rambled and had odd and outdated rhymes. I don't know what a kid would make of it as I couldn't even figure out where it was going. However, the illustrations, as usual, are adorable! Super cute and fun!
This book isn't really good for bedtime reading. It is almost more like a comic book than a storybook since it has a ton of characters talking in text bubbles. It doesn't tell a story through those text bubbles, either. The characters just make comments and tell jokes as they attempt to put on a play about nursery rhymes. I also think I might be missing some context for this book. It's pretty clear that it's part of a series about the Little Monster character, but since this isn't something I grew up with, much of the book doesn't make sense to me. I'll keep it on the bookshelf because I suspect it's something my son might enjoy when he's older and able to read on his own since it has a lot to look at and some humor an early reader would probably appreciate.
