General William Joseph Hardee was a career army officer, serving in the U.S. Army during the Second Seminole War and the Mexican-American War, and as a general in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War, opposing Sherman in Georgia. Hardee's writings about military tactics were widely used on both sides of the conflict.
