If I wanted to cook I would. I have the same problem with this book as so many others of the slow cooker variety. I do not want to have to cook before I cook.
I don't mind say fry up some hamburger/drain & add. But when it comes to melting butter, flouring cubed meat, then add onions, garlic, & shrooms, and then pour over potatoes and vegetables already in cooker, and then in 2 hours turn from high to low, and then 1 hour before finish add... Get my meaning?
As for making sauces or margaritas in my slow cooker? Not interested. Don't get me wrong I'd love a cheese dip or fondue but mainly I want dinner. I want to dump a bunch of stuff in a pot, go to work and come home to dinner. If I wanted to cook I would.

This is what I mean: Mom'Z Beef-N-Barley Soup = EZ

Brown BEEF + BARLEY, TOMATO, & CARROT. & THEN + whatever you got in your kitchen = Healthy meal when you get home.
• Brown 1lb. ground beef. Add it to slow cooker.
• 1 ½ Quart water
• 32oz diced tomatoes
• 3 Cup sliced carrots
• 1-4 Cups of whatever'Z left over in fridge Diced Celery + Potatoes + Onions.
• ¾ Cup Barley
• 3 Bouillon Cubes, Beef
• 2-3 teaspoon Salt
• ¼ Tea Pepper
Mix and cook on low for 8-10 hours (4-5 hours on High)
