synopsis:
susannah is attacked by the brother of a greedy rancher who wants to marry her. the brother, instead of just taking her to his brother, beats susannah up and plans on raping her. when she throws herself off the side of a cliff rather than submit, they give her up for dead. conor sees what is happening from across the canyon, and makes his way down to the river to rescue susannah. when he takes her to a cave and helps her to heal. when susannah sends him to their homestead because the men talked about beating her father, she asks him to look after her little sister lily carolina, too. connor finds the father on his deathbed, and brings lily carolina with him to the cave. when it turns out that both susannah and lily carolina are hurt worse than he originally thought, they head to town to a doctor, and pretend to be married. when susannah heals, all she can think about is revenge on fletcher, the man who wanted to marry her.

what i liked: conor. he was honourable and did the best that he could by everyone. he loved susannah and didn't hesitate to say so long before the last couple of pages. i liked the doctor and surrounding characters.

what i didn't like: susannah, surprisingly. i thought she was more annoying than brave.
