What if you met someone from ten years in your future? What would you ask them? What if you met someone from ten years in your past? What would you tell them? What if there was a place where people from different points in time could meet and talk? What would you do after leaving such a place, with knowledge of the future or knowledge of the past? Of course, such a place should be clean and comfortable and offer great food and coffee. On a lonely stretch of Route One in central Florida, with nothing but sand, cement and palm trees, is a place that few will ever see, a place called the Second Hand Diner. The diner is run by a kindly southern gentleman named Atticus who loves people, loves to cook and has a way of making you feel at ease. He also seems to know a lot more than he lets on. Come along as two men stumble upon this place. Mike Avery is a homicide detective at the end of his career, chasing one last killer, the most brutal and horrific he has ever dealt with. A killer that has a way with women and blends right in at Florida's singles' bars. Peter Cruse is a used car dealer running from a troubled past, and hoping to finally make his fortune on Florida's Treasure Coast. This unlikely pair could change everything...if they can learn to get along.
I think I might have given this book 5 stars if it weren't for the surprising number of grammar and spelling errors. I don't have a problem with a few mistakes, but these were so frequent I was distracted from the story. Nevertheless, the plot was very interesting and it was a very fast read so I'm rating it 4.5 stars. I'm looking forward to the next in this series.
Pete starts his new life in Florida with a stop at an unusual diner. He feels like he's home, and then he meets Mike. Mike is a state policeman on the trail of a serial killer, and it turns out Pete can help him catch his man. But when Pete realizes the diner they meet in takes each of them out of their own time, he has to decide what to do, save himself or a little part of humanity.
I did enjoy reading this book. The story line is fun to follow. The characters are authentic. Their personalities are very believable. The book could receive a five star rating except for the miss use of some words throughout the text, i.e. using the word there when speaking of people and several others along with miss spellings.
I really enjoyed novel. The characters are intriguing and the concept of a time portal can always keep my attention. Well written with an amazing plot line. I read this book in just a few hours. I had to know how it ended. I'd like to read more about Atticus. Only or little mistake by having dolphins in the Indian River. Dolphins do not swim in fresh water. As a native Floridian that's one thing I'm certain about. Otherwise a day story that begs for more from the author.
It's not often you find a book that has such a fresh idea and pairs it with great characters and a vibrant sense of place. I loved the fact that it took a gripping hunt for a serial killer and combined it with the intriguing Twilight Zone type feel to the Diner and Atticus in particular. Detective Mike Avery is the no BS cop the Mickey Spillane tradition, and Peter Cruse is the not-so-stereotypical used car salesmen. Both came to life for me as I read The Second Hand Diner. And Atticus....well let's just say I'm hoping that this is the first of many stories about this mysterious character!
I couldn't put this book down! I don't normally read science fiction, so I was a little hesitant, but I really enjoyed The Second Hand Diner. First of all, although the sci-fiction element is there, it is also a really good action adventure detective thriller. The characters are terrific and I am definitely intrigued by Atticus. I hope the author has at least one sequel in mind because I want to know more. I would recommend this to just about anyone. I couldn't put it down!
This was a hard book to put down. I found I needed to know the next thing the characters were going to do. Bringing two strangers into a diner to meet and change their lives is not a new idea, but the circumstances of the meeting definitely is. No matter if you like detective stories, sci-fi or just human interaction, this is a book you can enjoy. By the way, I am never going into a diner again unless there are many cars in the parking lot..... Waiting for the next installment.
My first mystery fiction genre. I don't like mysteries because I want to skip to the end to see who done it or how this will turn out. This is a very fast read. I liked the time warp thing. The only thing I didn't enjoy was some on the loose ends in the storyline, especially towards the end. Enjoyable nevertheless.
Really enjoyed this book. Read it straight thru with only short nap. :) can't wait till the next book in the series (hoping for a series!). Thank you Mr. Kloner!
I am a sucker for time travel stories. This book has a lot of typos (seriously, have someone edit the book), and a number of mechanical flaws (none too obtrusive or damaging), but the story holds up well, the characters are engaging, and you end the book with a good feeling about it.
This book was great. Interesting storyline with engaging characters. I found it hard to put down. Real page turner, if kindles had pages. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a sci-fi, mystery fan. Looking forward to reading the sequel.
