Penelope Jones Halsall
aka Caroline Courtney, Annie Groves, Lydia Hitchcock, Melinda Wright

Penelope "Penny" Jones was born on November 24, 1946 at about seven pounds in a nursing home in Preston, Lancashire, England. She was the first child of Anthony Winn Jones, an engineer, who died at 85, and his wife Margaret Louise Groves Jones. She has a brother, Anthony, and a sister, Prudence "Pru".

She had been a keen reader from the childhood - her mother used to leave her in the children's section of their local library whilst she changed her father's library books. She was a storyteller long before she began to write romantic fiction. At the age of eight, she was creating serialized bedtime stories, featuring make-believe adventures, for her younger sister Prue, who was always the heroine. At eleven, she fell in love with Mills & Boon, and with their heroes. In those days the books could only be obtained via private lending libraries, and she quickly became a devoted fan; she was thrilled to bits when the books went on full sale in shops and she could have them for keeps.

Penny left grammar school in Rochdale with O-Levels in English Language, English Literature and Geography. She first discovered Mills & Boon books, via a girl she worked with. She married Steve Halsall, an accountant and a "lovely man", who smoked and drank too heavily, and suffered oral cancer with bravery and dignity. Her husband bought her the small electric typewriter on which she typed her first novels, at a time when he could ill afford it. He died at the beginning of 21st century.

She earned a living as a writer since the 1970s when, as a shorthand typist, she entered a competition run by the Romantic Novelists' Association. Although she didn't win, Penny found an agent who was looking for a new Georgette Heyer. She published four regency novels as Caroline Courtney, before changing her nom de plume to Melinda Wright for three air-hostess romps and then she wrote two thrillers as Lydia Hitchcock. Soon after that, Mills and Boon accepted her first novel for them, Falcon's Prey as Penny Jordan. However, for her more historical romance novels, she adopted her mother's maiden-name to become Annie Groves. Almost 70 of her 167 Mills and Boon novels have been sold worldwide.

Penny Halsall lived in a neo-Georgian house in Nantwich, Cheshire, with her Alsatian Sheba and cat Posh. She worked from home, in her kitchen, surrounded by her pets, and welcomed interruptions from her friends and family.

PJ sure loves her love-at-first-sight, bad timing scenarios. Hero is in his 20's and heroine is 15 when they first meet as she tours his godfather's manor house with the other foster children. His godfather takes a shine to her and offers her a home for the summer.

The heroine chases the hero all summer. She is very open about her feelings and the hero is tempted. Before anything untoward can happen, the evil foster children decide to rob the old man. He has a stroke when they swarm him and the police take the heroine along with the other girls to the station. The hero is disappointed in the heroine and refuses to see her or listen her side of the story. His godfather dies a few days later.

Heroine escaped charges because someone* pleaded for leniency. Godfather left money for the heroine to go to university to be an architect. Heroine gratefully accepts that help from the trustees of the estate and earns her degree.

The story opens when she returns to the manor house to draw up blueprints for converting the place to a children's home. The trustees are following the godfather's wishes. Hero is one of the trustees (and it turns out the only trustee) and has decided to live there to watch over the heroine and to get in a spot of revenge.

The revenge scenario is never really developed because the hero is too busy with punishing kisses and insults. Plus his revenge scheme is undermined by the fact that he was the one paying for the heroine's tuition and her diamond earrings on her 21st birthday, since his godfather died with very little spare cash.

The H/h eventually clear up all these misunderstandings as well as what really happened the night of the robbery. I found the hero lusting after a 15 year-old a little squicky, and the hero's revenge was too anemic to be believable. But the hero was smitten as was the heroine, so I believed the HEA.

"The Marriage Demand" is the story of Faith and Nash.

So, I've just realized one of the tropes I utterly DETEST: The H's misconceptions leading to incarceration of the h, or vice versa. Nothing is worth jail time.

In this book, our h and H meet when he hires the company she works for to catalog and sell a home filled with precious antiques. Years ago, the h was taken in by the H's godfather at 15, and fell for her. Our naive ninny h then gets bullied by rich girls into stupidity aka shoplifting, and they try to rob shit and blame it on our h. So how does the h react to these accusations? By crying and barely speaking up while people put all the blame on her. Anyways, the godfather passes away, H blames the h, she is sent to juvenile center, story moves on. Also, H was apparently in love with the h but sleeps with multiple OW in the meanwhile.
In present, he manipulates and hires her again- only to seduce, slut shame and accuse her of everything. He's jealous, but he also hates her..sorta. They bang, a hymen is discovered, he calls her a hoe and wants to marry her. Our helpless h is like *insert crying noises and silence*

So what that he paid for her education? Does that warrant forcing marriage on someone you could have possibly sent to jail?

As always, our sissy h is afraid of thunderstorms. And he comforts her. And they shooby doo.

Then OM shows up. And macho H is jealous. My slutty ex virgin wife is MINE, how dare someone else look at this skanky ex-hymenated hoe (I am aware of the contradictions in the statement, the nincompoop hero isnt)

And it just gets worse after that.

This was stupid.
Filled with cliches.
I HATED it.
Please authors, MORNING AFTER PILL EXISTS. STOP FORCING DYSFUNCTIONAL ASSHOLIC IDIOTIC SPINELESS POSSIBLY HERPETIC COUPLES ON EACH OTHER.

I wish the poor stupid h ended up with OM. And someone donated their backbone to her.

Unsafe
0/5 (1 on GR because I want the rating to suffer)

15 years old orphan heroine is madly in love with hero. Hero is attracted to her but sadly Faith gets involved with a gang and is wrongly accused of a crime she never committed. Nash does not believe in her innocence and their romance ends before it even begins. Years later Faith is forced to work for Nash, he comes to realize how he misjudged her and they rekindle their romance.

Sweet and angsty read with a lovely HEA.

This was better on re-read and I did move it to two stars instead of one. Yes he was pretty vile and I got sick of all his accusations and was ready to say enough already, but then he'd think about how much he loves her when she was 15. He never went over the line with her because he was 22, and he was going to wait for her to grow up so they could have a future together and then we have the great and terrible misunderstanding. I hated that trope. And this man carried a grudge! I Just wanted to slap him. But I digress. He still paid for her education and bought her diamond earrings for her 21st birthday. I kind of squicked out that He was thinking of her on her 21 birthday when he went to spend a weekend with another woman and his he almost couldn't perform because of her but he managed it eventually but he said it was just awful. It was just so random and I really don't understand why it was in there. Just yuk also I did not mind that he moved on with other women because she was only 15 when he met her. Plus he thought she had caused his Godfathers stroke and killed him. He thought she was trying to rob him at the time too. He totally had no faith in her and it turned his young love into hate.

Hero, could you slut shame her just a little bit more? I don't think I quite got that you think the heroine is lying, cheating, thieving and possible diseased slut of unparalleled experience.

And heroine, instead of laying down figuratively AND literally could you please show a little self-respect? A little.

This is a fantastic example of Penny Jordan’s work at her very best. The story is as follows: Faith (our heroine) has grown up in social care. As a result of a chance meeting with an elderly man who sort of adopts her, she gets to have the opportunity for an education and grows up to be an architect. Using her knowledge, she then gets a job with a charity which refurbishes houses to become children’s homes. This was a theme which came up again and again in Jordan’s work and it makes you wonder whether this was a particular issue which was close to her heart. It pops up an extraordinary number of times in her novels.

However, Faith is hindered in her work in transforming her old mentor’s old home into a children’s home by the arrival of his godson, Nash – a man who blames her for the death of his godfather (the man who had helped Faith in the first place). It’s a bit more of a complicated story than usual, but – of course – Faith would never have done anything to harm the old man (if only she could get Nash to believe this!).

Fortunately for Faith, Nash has a habit of listening at doors and spying on Faith and due to this, he overhears the real cuprits confessing and so, of course, everything is okay for Faith and Nash in the end.

This is an interesting novel. I wrote an article some time ago about the feminist value of these texts and was then publicly ridiculed on radio 4 and in some newspapers for saying so. However, I stand by my research in this area (which is backed up by the research of others, I hasten to add). This novel really supports the feminist value of these texts – the hero is forced to accept the flawed way in which he has been behaving and forming judgements and the heroine, whilst not asserting her superiority to the hero, is only willing to accept a relationship which is formed on equal terms. By the end of the novel, the alpha male hero has learned his lesson (i.e. it’s not okay to go around being the alpha male hero without taking into account anybody else’s point of view) and everyone lives happily ever after. It’s exactly the outcome any reader can be happy with.

4.5 fab 🌟
Upgrading my original review since I finally decided to re-read. The plot was much different and somewhat of a workplace setting.

The h is an architect, working with a firm to overlook a heritage estate’s conversion. Her boss leaves her to live at this estate so she can work on the grounds. On day one the h meets the H, a man from her past. She is shocked and nervous that he might reveal her past to her employer and she’d be out of work any second.

The h had a bout of bad luck growing up. With her mother recovering from an extensive surgery and having no father, the h was left to grow up in foster care. At some point in her life she meets with a group of conniving girls who thief their way through life. While the h is bothered by this, there isn’t much she can do to avoid their bad influence.

There is an estate close by where the h meets the H. The estate’s owner is the H’s godfather who also treats the h as a long lost grand child. Eventually her bad company catches up with her when these girls leave the h in a vulnerable position in a petty theft as well as an accessory to murder.

Thankfully the h is never convicted but the H who catches her at that time believes the case against her and starts his long winding journey to hate her.

Finally at current times they meet after ten years. Their chemistry is still burning and the H still wrongfully accuses her of theft as well as his godfather’s death. There are many sweet surprises revealed when the h finally sees who had been supporting her expensive education as an architect and sending her graduation presents.

Just like expected from PJ, the MCs were passionate and explosive in their hating and loving. I loved how the H forced a marriage proposal without having any real reason for it. I wish there was more of an epilogue and their life as a married couple. Also don’t know what really happened to her engagement ring :(
Loved it and recommend it!!

I sympathized with Faith and admired her for persevering despite all the adversities she'd faced. By the time she turned 15, Faith had been abandoned by everyone she cared for in some way or another. *sniffs*

Years later Faith is reunited with Nash as she finds herself working for him. I found their romance believable considering the circumstances, but it felt bland.

The ending seemed abrupt and could have been drawn out more. I was puzzled because they didn't really address their issues.

Debbie's review gives a great overview of the problems with this book. The H gets everything wrong and his constant conflcting feelings make him King of the Moodswings. He allowed himself to be persuaded and never truly reconsidered.

PJ is one of my favorite authors but this one is not her best..... unfortunately.
H/h have a painful past together made of unrequited love/lust (filled by guilt on his side for the age gap) turned into hate because of false allegations against the h.
They live apart for many years; she graduates, starts a good job and seems to be out of the past ghosts.
Chance (actually not chance....) reunites them and we see the H all bent to make the h pay for her (supposed) crimes.
This seems like a usual PJ train wreck and it is but.... some elements do not fit: the h is an "annoying" martyr, the H is only apparently cruel... so the story does not really impress.

Millionaire Nash Connaught knew something about Faith that could cost her her job. And he was holding the dark secret over her head.... He had never meant to blackmail her into bed! But the temptation they both felt had been too strong....

Faith was--had been--a virgin. Nash's reaction was to insist on marriage. But was he marrying Faith for honor? Or was it part of his revenge for something that had happened between them ten years ago?

This was a good story, but some things bugged me. First and foremost, the h being only 15 when she meets the H and while it's not surprising that she'd crush on a guy in his mid-20's, it feels a bit creepy knowing he was attracted to her, as well, when she should have been in kid sister mode. (As these stories always go, since she's his destined soulmate, those feelings are supposed to be more acceptable but still, it doesn't feel right.)

Also (and worse), the H is convinced (or convinces himself) she's guilty of a crime that caused his uncle's stroke without ever hearing her side of the story which she desperately wanted to tell him, and later admits this was because he couldn't handle his real feelings for her. (It might make an intriguing song: "I Couldn't Handle My Love So I Wanted You in Jail".) Yet, he secretly argued for leniency in her case.

In truth, she was unhappy. lost adolescent in a foster home (her mother was alive but ill and unable to look after her) where a group of tough girls set her up, so they could get into the H's uncle's house (the elderly man had befriended the h) and then rob the place. When she figured this out, she tried to stop it, but circumstances made her look like the guiltiest of the bunch.

Worse still, over six years later they meet again (she's helping with renovating his late uncle's house into a children's home, and he seems determined to act like he still thinks the worst of her. when meanwhile he's the one who paid for her to go to school to study architecture. He threatens to tell her boss about her past, makes cruel comments, claims he still doesn't trust her, etc. There are characters in these books that you sometimes want to shake until all their teeth rattle and he's sure one of them!

Of course, the time comes when it all gets straightened out (the crappy excuse for a person a.k.a. leader of the bad girl gang resurfaces, along with her equally crappy mom, and the truth comes out at last. Naturally, there's a HEA (and before that, the OM/OW thrown in to add a bit of jealousy, also a poignant story involving an old tapestry that might have been a good historical romance, if it had also included a HEA.

Worth reading, but a little frustrating at times.

Faith has started a new job for a charitable foundation as an architect but the last thing she expects is to come face to face with her old flame and one true love, Nash Connaught!
Things are complicated they still deeply feel a lot for each other but situations in the past are clouding the present and only time will tell if the ghosts can be laid to rest and Nash and Faith can move on and have any sort of future.
A quirky modern romance with little twists along the way which always makes Penny Jordan's oeuvre a cut above others in the genre.

Jempol buat niih buku... buku Penny Jordan lain yg membuat gw gax merasa rugi karna membeli.nya...

Ceritanya dalem...

tp akhir.nya??? Alhamdulillah Happy Ending... ^^
