Andy considers all of the people he is thankful for in his life and imagines different ways he might return their favors to them through gift giving and gratitude.

I like the practical questions and the thoughtful answers. The book almost takes on a choose-your-own-adventure vibe in that you can follow one character through all of Andy's answers to see how he would best reward them with his gratitude. I did just that by following very closely the answers given in regards to the doctor; it was a good choice as the answers got very imaginative.

Back matter includes extension activities that encourage readers to consider the people in their lives and gives them practical ideas to show them they care.

Gouache and digital artwork is vibrant and retro-inspired.

Highly recommended for sharing with PreK-6.

I LOVE THIS
It's a unique format about a little boy who wants to be thankful - the author address who he wishes to thank, what he'd like to offer as far as giving (aside from physical things, also addresses feelings) and toward the close of the book prompts making a gratitude jar
Age appropriate
promotes kindness... we need that

A simple book about gratitude for early elementary kids. Each double spread opens with a question followed by numerous answers, each illustrated in colorful gouache and digital art. Sample questions: Who would you like to say thank you to? If you could give them a gift, what would you give?

This is a great book to reflect on things we're thankful for or to help jump start the conversations of gratitude. And, maybe get inspired to do your own acts of kindness!

If you are looking for a way to inspire your children to think of all they are grateful for, who they may want to thank, and unique ways to express gratitude to others, then this is the book for you!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Giving Thanks begins when Andy introduces himself to the readers. He dives right into the idea of giving thanks by letting us know that he was asked if there was anyone he would like to thank. He shows us everyone he thought of, but also challenges us to think of who we would like to thank.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Throughout the book, Andy poses a question to the readers (such as “What would you like to say thank you for?" or "If you could share an afternoon with them, what would you do?"), while also showing us how he'd answer the question for every single person he wants to thank. I especially love the pages where we see Andy's ideas for an act of kindness that we could do to show gratitude and thinking through quality time with the special people (or pets or stuffed animals) in his life.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But, my favorite pages of Giving Thanks are the final two spreads in the book. On one, Surrey gives step-by-step directions to both making and filling a gratitude jar. From pets to food to nature to friends to achievements and more, Surrey's questions ensure that readers think through all aspects of their lives as they think of what they're thankful for. The othee teaches children how to make thank you cards for the important people in their lives, prompted by the questions "Who are you thankful for?" and "How many people can you make feel special?"
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After reading this book in our family meeting, we made gratitude jars and thank you notes. Throughout the month of November, we'll fill the gratitude jars, and every Sunday night we'll write thank you notes to the people we are thankful for.

What a clever book this is for students! It teaches them basic English for abstract concepts
related to an attitude of gratitude. Giving Thanks illustrated by Ellen Surrey encourages reflection by children and a caring attitude communicated to a child's social circle. A perfect PYP book for teaching the learner profile of reflective, caring communicators.

It would be so easy to include additional activities with the reading of this book: reflection and discussion about who we are thankful for, writing thank you notes, and/or creating a gratitude jar.

The book contains happy joyful illustrations and short chunks of language as if the book if for one's first 100 words in English, yet these words are all related to thankfulness. Probably a perfect storytime read for Thanksgiving as well!

May be useful in a classroom setting to give examples of gratitude and maybe making a gratitude jar but it is not a read aloud.

If you need some help getting ideas of how to thank people or give gifts, then this could be helpful. Even has a recipe for some homemade thank you cards. Wahoo!

I really liked the premise of this book where it was set up with each spread as an answer to a question, but I felt like it was missing some polish. I wanted the language from Andy to be consistently first person. Like shouldn't he say "share MY favorite thing with them" rather than YOUR? Also it got weird when his dr turned into an imaginary princess and he was pretending to be a knight.
