Wilbert Vere Awdry, OBE, better known as the Rev. W. Awdry, was an English clergyman, railway enthusiast and children's author, and creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, who starred in Awdry's acclaimed Railway Series.
The characters that would make Awdry famous, and the first stories featuring them, were invented in 1943 to amuse his son Christopher during a bout of measles. The first book (The Three Railway Engines) was published in 1945, and by the time Awdry stopped writing in 1972, The Railway Series numbered 26 books. Christopher subsequently added further books to the series.
There is no story here, it just features characters from Thomas the Tank Engine and their corresponding colors. I like trains so that's enough for me to like the book just to see the characters and practice identifying their names and jobs.
I am a believer that books on colors should feature primary and secondary colors and this one is missing purple, but included the white helicopter Harold. I would've preferred to see a purple engine such as Charlie, Culdee, Fergus, Godred, Hank, Lady, Mighty Mac, Rosie or Wilfred. There are plenty to choose from.
Got a series of four in a little box from Sam's Club at Christmas time. My husband and I aren't thrilled with them, but our son (fascinated with all things train) enjoys them. Unfortunately durable with no objectionable content, we will be keeping them for him to look at but trying to avoid reading them!
