Wilbert Vere Awdry, OBE, better known as the Rev. W. Awdry, was an English clergyman, railway enthusiast and children's author, and creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, who starred in Awdry's acclaimed Railway Series.
The characters that would make Awdry famous, and the first stories featuring them, were invented in 1943 to amuse his son Christopher during a bout of measles. The first book (The Three Railway Engines) was published in 1945, and by the time Awdry stopped writing in 1972, The Railway Series numbered 26 books. Christopher subsequently added further books to the series.
Annoyingly ineffective. Got a series of four in a little box from Sam's Club at Christmas time. My husband and I aren't thrilled with them, but our son (fascinated with all things train) enjoys them. Unfortunately durable with no objectionable content, we will be keeping them for him to look at but trying to avoid reading them!
Engaging for a Thomas fan but not particularly clear in illustrating opposites. For example, the up/down illustration is drawn from the perspective of someone standing on a hill looking up a road; 'down' is the train coming towards the reader and 'up' the one going away from the reader. It would have been much simpler to show a side profile of a hill, with one chugging up and one chugging down!
