A Texas rancher will do anything to protect a woman in jeopardy and the little boy who could be his son…
With the ferocity of a tigress, Kate Williams desperately fights a kidnapper trying to snatch her adopted son from her arms. When rancher Dallas O'Brien sees the skirmish, he bravely saves the infant and his lovely mother. Single and new in town, Kate accepts the handsome cowboy's offer of a safe haven at his ranch.
Spurred on by their Texas-sized attraction, Dallas and Kate untangle a web of lies that throws the baby's paternity into question. And Dallas wonders—could he be a father? Could he be a husband? But when bullets start flying, the real question is, will he survive to find out?

Good book. Dallas is at the feed store when he sees someone attempting to snatch a baby from a woman's arms. He jumps right in and saves the child and his mother, then takes it upon himself to protect them both. But does he have some extra motivation, other than his feeling of responsibility? Dallas has recently received word that a former girlfriend gave birth to a son, and that he could be the father. He has set a PI to investigating and discovered that her child may have been put up for adoption, through the same agency where Kate adopted her son.
Kate's marriage recently ended, but not her desire for a family of her own. So she has adopted a baby and set out to make her own life the way she wants it. She is running a soup kitchen and giving back to the community where she has made her new home. She is terrified when someone attempts to kidnap Jackson and grateful for the help of the stranger who came to her aid. There's something about him that makes her feel safe, but she's wary of getting involved with another man.
I loved the way that Dallas fell so hard and so fast for both Kate and Jackson. He quickly makes them part of his life and doesn't want to let them go. He's also fascinated by Jackson, and wonders what the chances are that he is Jackson's father. I loved his protectiveness toward them both, and how he is determined to get to the truth about the attempted kidnapping and follow on attempts.
I felt bad for Kate and the problems she has been having with her own family. Their lack of support is only emphasized by the closeness of Dallas's family. She is also wary of getting involved with Dallas so quickly because of her experience with her ex-husband. She is afraid of making the same mistake again, though her heart tries to tell her that there is no comparison.
The mystery of the attempted kidnapping is very well done. When they discover that the attempt on Jackson is just one of a series, the question becomes why. It is especially puzzling because the kidnapped infants show up unharmed a few days later. It also appears that there could be a link between them kidnappings and the disappearance of Dallas's former girlfriend. It was interesting to see the false clues left, and how Dallas and Kate worked to figure out the truth. I liked seeing what it was and what it meant for Dallas.
There was also some unexpected information that came out about the recent deaths of Dallas's parents. He had held himself responsible for what had happened to them, but the new information shows something entirely different/ There are hints that things were not all what they should have been in some of the family dynamics. I suspect that this storyline with continue through the series, and I am looking forward to seeing if I am right about who is responsible. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.
This romantic suspense had an exciting beginning, end and a couple spots in between but lots of repetitive ruminating that I started skimming. Also, the heroine's actions were contradictory. Rancher Dallas thwarts an attempted kidnapping of Kate's baby.
Texas rancher Dallas O'Brien intervenes when an assailant attempts to kidnap Kate Williams' baby. When the police inform them of a series of recent abductions, Kate accepts Dallas's offer of a safe haven. But why would Kate's son be targeted, and does Dallas have an ulterior motive?
Although the story takes place Texas and the hero is ostensibly a cowboy, these elements play no role in the plot, and it could have been set anywhere. That said, the suspense is well-written with some exciting action scenes and an interesting twist or two.
Kate and Dallas have good chemistry and his interactions with baby Jackson are sweet. Both have well-developed backstories, which is not always the case in a category romance. While the mystery surrounding the death of Dallas's parents is obviously the beginning of a continuing story arch, Kate's problematic relationship with her family is wrapped up in this installment albeit too neatly and tidily.
Overall, a strong start to the series and I look forward to reading about Dallas's brothers in the following books.
This book gets you involved and on the edge of your seat from the beginning. There's an attempted kidnapping or maybe we should call it an attempted baby snatching. The adopted Mom struggles to hold on to her baby and then a good looking stranger helps her. So the baby is still with her, but she needs to keep him safe and find out who is trying to get him and why.
Dallas is the good looking stranger that helped her and he is also looking for answers. He has some questions of his own that need answering.
Someone tries to steal Kate Williams' baby Jackson as she heads to work. The kidnapping attempt is thwarted by the assistance of rancher Dallas O'Brien. How vows to help her figure out who is behind it. It seems most likely linked to the adoption agency Kate got her baby boy from. Dallas has a personal involvement, as an ex-girlfriend said she had his baby, and he suspects she gave him up for adoption before disappearing, and he has a private detective looking into it. Could he be Jackson's father?
Another Barb Han snorefest. There are maybe two moments of action in the whole story. The rest is just Kate getting tears in her eyes or sobbing every two pages, saying, "I can't lose my baby!" Seriously, her tear ducts are on overdrive! Or Dallas' heart swelling with love at seeing how motherly Kate is with Jackson. There was some initial intrigue as to what was the motive behind the attempted kidnapping, but this is slowly and surely sapped away by the fact that barely anything is happening. By the end, I'm not sure even Barb knew what was going on. I also had trouble believing that Dallas and Kate would be allowed to have so much access to a criminal investigation despite Dallas being close friends with the detective. Events wrap up in an extremely underwhelming off-hand way.
Barb Han's boring books is a large part of the reason I ended my Intrigue subscription. Reading dreary, uninspired, uninteresting stories such as this only confirms I made the right decision.
Dallas may have thought he could prevent the kidnapping and walk away, but one look into Kate's eyes and he knew...he wasn't going anywhere! Multiple cases are intertwined and overlapping here as Dallas fights to keep Kate safe and find the answers they desperately need. Neither Kate nor Dallas are looking for a relationship or love, but they cannot deny the instant attraction and trust that springs up between them. There is a closeness that cannot be explained as anything other than "right", They belong together, with Jackson and whilst the timing may be difficult, it forces them to face their feelings. Dallas is such a strong character who is juggling many balls already, but as a protector he cannot walk away from Kate and Jackson, which is good as it makes him to slow down a little and ask his brothers for help, something he would usually avoid if possible. An intriguing start to the series I look forward to getting to know the brothers better as they each find their "one". I listened to this on Audible.
This is the first book in the Cattleman Crime Club series. It was a page turner. We meet the first of six brothers, Dallas, He is trying to keep his ranch up and going that he inherited from his parents, who have recently passed. One morning Dallas is waiting to get some supplies when he sees someone try to kidnap Kate and her son..he rushes in to help.while helping they get away..Kate has adopted her son and doesn't understand what is going on...things start happening as they are trying to stay safe.sparks are there between Kate and Dallas as he is helping her as much as he can....Could her son be his that he believes he has? Will anything come out of investigating Safe Haven the adoption agency? When Dallas learns news about his late parents he is upset...This is a page turner. You have to keep going and not putting it down til you find out what all happens!
I've read this series already. I already own it on ebook and in print, but now I got the chance to listen to the audio. The author did a phenomenal job writing the story. It's the perfect balance between excitement, mystery and romance. I like the characters, they're very relatable and the story kept a nice pace throughout the story. It didn't seem to lag or drag on at any time. I do wish the ending had been a bit more exciting, as the car chase scene was more exciting than the ending, but I like the ending anyway. The narrator did a pretty good job. I think she could have been a bit more excited in some places and when the characters whispered she could have simulated whispering instead of just speaking normally, but other than that she did a good job. Well done to both. I'm off to read... listen to the next story.
I really enjoyed this story. Kate left an unhappy life and found love in her adoption of a baby boy. I loved her strength and determination to do this on her own, and her mother-bear protection of her son. Dallas had quite the family support system with all the teasing that went with it. He had his own past that haunted him, but he was protective of Kate. He was so tender with both mother and son that it melted my heart.
The narration by Rebecca Mitchell was very well done. She kept the story alive as well as the characters and made the story that much better.
This was a good story. I enjoyed that the story kept me guessing from beginning to end. What made it even better was the surprise that only one of all my suspicions was correct. I love stories that keep the ending a secret until the end. The characters in this story are down-to-earth feel-good type characters. The type of characters that could be your neighbor or your best friend. I loved the dynamic and chemistry between Kate and Dallas and I look forward to reading more of this series, getting to know more of the O'Brien family.
I enjoyed this intriguing romance. I bought this at a local Goodwill store and I voluntarily chose to review this book. I've given it a 4.5* rating. This is not for the under 18 readers because of violence and sexual content. This pulled me in fast and kept tugging on my heartstrings to keep turning pages. Yes, it involves a baby and a single mom. Lots of action, and a good ending.
The story pace is slow and the romance is abrupt. I find it hard to believe that a single mother has the energy to react so passionately while running from a killer. With all its drawback, the storyline is still interesting.
Okay, so in going to start my review before I forget a few things.. So far I really like this book, although it has a couple questioning spots... at one point the book mentions a time of 6 months in the past with Kate and her Adopted son, but later after the almost kidnapping takes place she says the baby is only almost 3 months old... so that park didn't make sense to me, maybe an error... Then Dallas keeps talking about the women he was with who was possibly pregnant with his child. He says she skipped town and no one has heard of her or the child's whereabouts since, but yet he keeps bringing up an adoption center.. but if He and no one else knows, then why is he so adamant that she gave the baby up? They think she might not have ever been pregnant, so it's possible there never was a kid to begin with, let alone put up for adoption...He also keeps saying it's a boy and the last place she was seen was new mexico... so even if she did adopt the baby out the logical place she would have adopted him out would be in new mexico, not texas where this book is based in, they said her family hasnt even heard or seen from her....Just some things I'm questioning, it might reveal itself later, maybe not? but I wanted to document it before I forgot :)
okay I have finished the book now :)
I liked it, I loved all the characters especially little Jackson and dallas.. I loved that the author let us get to know the baby, I feel that alot of authors write a story about baby's but never tell much about them for us to really get to know them. so I really liked that about this book :) I did already know how the outcome was going to happen as far as finding out if Dallas was the father or not. But it was overall a good story, quick read, there were a few iffy things in it for me that's why I gave it a 4 star instead of a 5. one thing I didn't like too much is how they literally just met and decided to get married, it's a sweet idea, and I know it's a fictional book, but in reality, marrying without hardly knowing someone like that never tends to end up good.. with that being said I can't wait until the next book in the series comes out. I hope it's even better :)
A great start to the new Cattlemen Crime Club series by Barb Han! It's exciting from the first page as we try to figure out who is up to no good and why!
Recent transplant to Bluff, TX, Kate Williams is minding her own business heading in to work for the morning when someone attempts to snatch her adopted infant son from her arms! She holds him off and lucks into Dallas O'Brien seeing what is happening and jumping in to save her and her baby.
Dallas takes her under his wing and off to the Sheriff's office where they find out there's something big going on and Kate and her son seem to be right in the middle of it. He whisks them off to his ranch to keep them safe until they can figure out who is behind the attempted kidnapping and they try to unravel the web of lies surrounding the adoption ... and figure out if it's possible this is the possible son Dallas has been trying to track down!
This is a fantastic start to this new series! Suspense all the way til the end! Loved every minute of it.
Dallas has to have answers. And he needs them now. That's why he hired a P.I. to find them. And his ex. Is he a father? Chances are slim to none but he has to know. And when fate throws Kate and her baby son Jackson his way, he will do all in his power to keep them safe and find out answers. Could Jackson be his son??
Kate always wanted a family. But when her marriage went from bad to worse she decided to do it on her terms. Adoption was her answer. So when a failed abduction scares her senseless she's glad Dallas is there to help. And with all of his help keeping them safe maybe they can find answers. But as their attraction grows, can she keep a level head and find out who is after her son? And will she find out that Dallas is really Jacksons father?
If you haven't read any of Barb Han's books yet, you are missing out. I just finished reading Stockyard Snatching and it was Brilliant. The story was great and the Characters were amazing.
Dallas - was in the right place and the right time. Witnessing a would be kidnapping and jumping in to save Kate and her baby. While trying to figure out where an old flame went and possibly having a child out there somewhere he tried to protect Kate and her son all the while falling for her.
Kate - Almost lost her son due to a kidnapping but was saved by a hot cowboy. While trying to figure out who is trying to get her baby she grows feelings for her protector.
This is my favorite story from Barb. I can't wait to check out more of her work.
This book seems to be the start of a series. The Cattlemen Crime Club is only mentioned in passing and even though the problem with Kate and her baby is resolved, Dallas is faced with the realization that his parents were murdered. The investigation into that isn't even started.
