Overall, "Of" is a well-crafted and thought-provoking tale that resonates long after the final page.
We have all wondered at one time or another what our pets do when we leave the home. The movie, The Secret Life of Pets, answers that curious question in the most humorous of ways. The writers cleverly took the normal behavior of animals, mixed it with a dash of mischief and a sprinkle of chaos to produce a dog-gone bowl full of hilarity.
The book, Meet the Pets, is an excellent companion to the movie, The Secret Life of Pets. The book is part of Random House’s ‘Step 3’ reading program, where children can read on their own. Author Mary Mon-Kong highlights several quirky facts about each pet that appeared in the film. Did you know that Bearded Dragon loves to drive, even though he does not know how to? Or, that Leonard, the posh poodle, is a classical music lover when his owner is around, but a true heavy metal fan when left alone?
The illustrated computer graphics which appear throughout the book, stay true to what is seen in the movie, The Secret Life of Pets, right down to the intricate detail of the animal fur. The colors used on each page are both vibrant and accurate in tone, particularly when it comes to the the animal coats, e.g. the fawn color of Mel the pug’s hairy coat. The blending of the tan and black colors all over the character, along with the dark shading around the muzzle, ears and eyes, are true to how a pug’s coat appears.
To add more fun to the book, Meet the Pets, Random House has included 16 Collector Cards at the back of the book, which feature pictures of the pets from the film. The cards can be cut out and used to decorate a room, a play area and school books. They are also fun to trade with friends while watching the movie again and again on DVD or BluRay.

My 6 year-old son got this level 3 easy reader from his Scholastic book order. The book is fun. It describes most of the characters from the movie with scenes from the film. And it came with trading cards for most of those same characters. He's read the book many times and enjoys playing with the cards. It also came with a Max pen, which he also likes. I like anything that gets him reading, but this book isn't anything spectacular. It ties into the movie well and at least gets the story right, which some Step into Reading books don't do.
