Tommie Mills is a nine-year-old boy with very few interests or friends. On a field trip to a local farm, Tommie meets Bruce, a feisty little chicken with an unusual personality. When Tommie finds out that Bruce is going to be sold, he is so upset that his parents buy Bruce and bring him to live with them. However, once he's under the Mills’ family’s roof, they discover that their feathered friend has the makings of a martial arts master.
A kid goes to on a field trip to a farm. He spies a small rooster. When the class bully tries to scare the chicken, the chicken gives him a kick in the stomach.
The farmer, fearing liability, wants to sell the chicken, and the kid convinces his parents to buy it. He tries to teach the bird karate.
I love "Bruce The Kickin Chicken" Finally - a novel idea. Teach tolerance (Boy likes chickens) and the concept "You can't possibly guess what talents others have..." by showing that Bruce the chicken is a superstar in disguise!
Novel - creative - FUNNY!!! MODERN! Bruce the Chicken has a social media following.
Author John Ulutunu does his best to a) point out the tactics of kids who bully others or say mean things, "... Whenever Melvin smiled it meant that he was about to say or do something mean..." b) offer concepts (like, "You don't have to be afraid of bullies or mean kids") "... Tommie sighed. He had stopped being afraid of Melvin a long time ago, but he didn't want anything to ruin this day. c) and offer actionable steps (Like, "Don't hide but speak up!") "I don't eat everything in sight like you do, Melvin. Chickens are cool animals," Tommie answered.
I love this book, hope to learn more about Bruce and his adventures. 5 stars - Highly recommended! Gisela Hausmann, author
My daughter loved this book. She thought it was fun and funny. It was clean and a great choice of story for a child her age. Would be nice if it went through editing again though. The sentence structures were the same throughout the entire book, along with some spelling and grammatical errors. Reading it myself was entirely tedious.
The story is interesting and the language is quite simple and easy to understand. Additionally, it also contains a meaningful lesson that you can teach your children at home. Thank the author very much to have such a nice story.
I did not like the fact that the reader was told that it would take less than 30 minutes to read this and had given no clue that it had about 6or so chapters with o illustrations inside this ebook. I did enjoy this story's action and adventurous events though. These are my reasons for rating this for four stars and wishing to recommend this for those ages 5-18 and or in grades K-12 who may be involved in or enjoy watching one doing martial arts as Bruce did. I received this for free and in return, here is my honest review. Great work John! By Sunny
For some reason, I came into this thinking it was going to be an illustrated children's book. It wasn't, but it also did not disappoint.
Tommie's a great kid and could serve as a perfect role model for kids his age. He has a kind heart who tries to understand where people are coming from, but also stands up to bullies when they step too far out of line. He's not perfect, but is also brave enough to own up to his mistakes. But what I liked about him most is that he's a responsible pet owner, who really cares about his adopted pet's welfare. ♥
I read this to see if my grandchildren would like it. It was a cute, imaginative story about a chicken that learned karate. I had two issues with the story aside from a few proofreading errors. First, the ending left the reader with questions I know a child would ask. Second, a chicken named Bruce should be called a rooster and that was never mentioned. I might share this with my grandchild, but it would be better with a little better editing and fleshing out of the story.
An enjoyable contemporary children's story. I received this as a free download and felt that it was good value when compared with other children's stories that are often too short. There are no illustrations in the book. A few punctuation glitches caused my rating to drop by one star; otherwise, I would have given 5 because the story is excellent. Kids' books must have perfect punctuation because they are in the process of learning while reading.
This book was adorable! Short story with no pictures. Tommie visits a farm with his class and sees an astonishing chicken, Bruce, who stands up to a bully in Tommie’s class. Unfortunately, that action gets Bruce in trouble, and he has to leave the farm. Tommie’s family adopts him and Bruce shows off his skills in non-violent ways.
Our 7 year old son who takes taekwondo loved this book! There were some grammatical errors and spelling was wrong here and there, but since I read it to him i corrected it as I went.
Lighthearted, easy read for upper elementary kids.
From my kids: the whole thing! Silly but sweet with a good moral. Easy to read. I read it to my kids at bedtime for about 3-4 nights in a row. Fun read for the whole family.

I read this book. I love it. It's goofy. I love the story about a chicken who knows karate. I read this book in half a hour. Twice. I read it twice. Loved it.
Bruce The Kickin' Chicken by Mary Sue is a strange tale and I have mixed emotions about this book. It was a cute tale about a boy wanting to save a chicken, rooster, that attacked a boy at a farm. He then teaches the bird to fight. Ummm... I know it is just a story but with all the illegal cock fights, is this what we want to teach the kids? Maybe teach him to dance?
This was actually a book that had an interesting title and proved to be just as interesting as the rest of it sounds like. But as a heads-up to those who may be interested in the cover the cover isn't truthful although it does catch the eye.
The book is written for a younger crowd who are actually into reading chapter books so even though it may be a bit on the long side and with no pictures the writing is very simple to follow without a lot of words to trip up younger readers. Furthermore with the exception of the first chapter most of the chapters are only just a few pages.
Otherwise the writing itself could do a skim over by an editor once more. The most problems I see deal with the names with either a wrong name being given, the last name of one character being changed around every so often or the name being misspelled from its original format. There are also a few spots where too many words were used or the wrong words were added but they are fortunately few-in-between.
So if your child is looking for a good book with a interesting name this is one that I would recommend. There is truly no need for an adult to read it beforehand unless they are interested in checking it out on their own and it carries a good message on how children shouldn't be bullies nor take the advantage to mock bullies as well as that we all need to find something safe to do to pass the time instead of letting it waste.
This is a great easy reader chapter book. The adventures of Bruce the chicken and Tommy are ones that young boys or girls will love. There is plenty of action throughout the book which keeps it exciting and engaging to the reader. The story also teaches some life lessons about bullying behavior. How to treat others, forgive others and apologize when you do something wrong. This is a perfect book for teachers to use after recess to calm students, and then use to encourage good behavior.
