Ruby's Potty

Rate this book
Ruby loves her brand-new potty. The trouble is, she doesn't know what it's for. She hides it, slides it, and puts it on her head ... but when it's really needed, it's nowhere to be found-oops! Parents will smile and kids will squeal with laughter over this sweet mouse's clever uses for her potty. Even better, toddlers will be inspired when they see how proud Ruby is when she finally learns how to use her potty for the right thing.

This is a cute book, but all I got from it was how counter-productive it is to leave a potty out so the child "can get used to it." It's a great illustration for the parent on why you should only pull out the potty when it's actually time for the child to learn to use it. Otherwise, she'll do exactly what Ruby does - scoots on it like a car, slides it down a ramp, wears it as a hat (barf), puts her stuffed animals in it, etc. Of course, when she finally needs it for its intended purpose, she can't find it, and she has an accident on the floor. But does this help her parents to wise up and remove it as a toy? Nope. But somehow magically, one day, they can't find her ... because she's actually peeing on the pot.

All my child is going to get out of reading this book is that it's totally acceptable for her to play with her potty, and I'm going to continue under the delusion that one day she will just on her own learn what to do with the potty. Not a helpful read for parents or children.

This book was sweet, but I felt like it introduced my toddler to things she could do with her potty that she hadn't thought of yet. Not happy making in my book.

What is the real use for a potty? Ruby tries to answer this question by using it for... EVERYTHING! But it isn't until she REALLY has to use it that the purpose of a potty sinks in.
