Pretentious, boring, and rather insufferable.

If you are hoping for a book that tells the story of a new farmer, may be to inspire your own journey to farming, this is probably not what you're looking for. If you were hoping to read about practical decisions and lessons learned, and may be even glean some wisdom about how and what to plant, this is definitely not for you.
If you want to read philosophical and political mumbo-jumbo, this is the book for you.
Oh, and spoiler alert, which made me want to throw the book across the room....
There is no freaking farm! Because on the last page of the book, hubby gets transferred to Europe.
Seriously.

I like this author because she has a creative flair with words. I sought this book because I have read another of her books "The Kitchen Congregation" which I thoroughly enjoyed each time I read it. She wrote "The Road to My Farm" to describe her journey towards becoming a small farm owner. She goes into detail as to what crops she should plant and whether to go organic or not. She discusses all the pros and cons of various animals that she could keep. She talks to farmers to find their opinions on all these topics and to find out how they care for their animals. She conducts an in depth research and while she does, her husband supports her in every way including lots of teasing. She also talks about her education, various classes and things she learned while studying agriculture at a large Texas university. She relates experiences she had working on ranches in various parts of the country. Becoming a farmer is no whim and she wants to do so with her eyes wide open. I'll admit that I got bogged down in the middle of this one but it may not have had anything to do with her writing. My reading time was significantly interrupted for a few weeks at the passing of my mother. I do recommend this book.
