CHAPTER XXIII OBSESSION AND INSANITY In this chapter, I desire to place before the reader in a fair and clear manner facts which are too often neg- lected by Spiritualists, but which those who develop or become mediums are apt to find out to their cost later in their development, unless they are aware of the facts at the beginning. "Truth is always best," and it is accordingly best for the student to know the dangers and difficulties attendant upon Spiritualism as well as the bright side. We do not wish to alarm or divert from interest any student by this and the following chapters. Precisely the reverse. But inasmuch as "fore- warned is forearmed" the student should be familiar with all the possible risks he is running; as there are such risks if he does not develop his mediumistic power systematically and along the right lines, as so often pointed out before in this book. THE REALITY OF SPIRIT OBSESSION As we saw in the last chapter, it is often easier for the low and less developed spirits to come in touch with us than those more highly developed; and this is especially the case where mediumistic development has not been such as to bring the student in touch with the higher forces and intelligences. Modern science does not accept the doctrine of spirit-obsession as true, claiming that the cases of so-called spirit influence are really only cases of diseased mind and body, requiring for their MI cure proper medical attention. Experienced Spiritualists, however, know that while many cases of apparent obsession may be accounted for in this manner, there are also cases of real influence coming from less-developed, disembodied spirits, and as great a psychologist as Prof. Wm. Hereward Carrington, Ph.D. (born Hubert Lavington) (17 October 1880 – 26 December 1958) was a well-known British investigator of psychic phenomena and author. His subjects included several of the most high-profile cases of apparent psychic ability of his times, and he wrote over 100 books on subjects including the paranormal and psychical research, conjuring and stage magic, and alternative health issues.
Verrrrrrrrrrrry textbook lol You don't need to read the whole book, just the chapters you find interesting :) This is why it took me forever to read lol there's only so much you can learn in one sitting and then it just get's friggin boring.
I listened to the audio version on youtube for free, it was an 10+ hour recording. I found it absolutely fascinating. A lot of the advice for lifestyle for being a good medium applies to those who want to live a healthy life also. A lot of the ideas that have been revitalized via media today like: "our thoughts become our reality" are covered in depth here.
There are things I think are likely and those I think are unlikely in this book (the latter of which predominate towards the end of the work). I, however, will give the author credit that he came across as highly educated, and handled the wide range of subjects that this work covers quite well.
Overall great informations and tips, but many things said are surpassed. I surely recommend it anyway, for a general first knowledge on the ‘super-natural’ ☺️
A good book with lots of info but title is a bit misleading as it's very heavily slanted towards mediumship development, as opposed to psychic development of other types.
