Rate this book
A 2017 Outstanding Science Trade Book for Students K-12 (National Science Teachers Association-Children's Book Council) and Prehistoric Book of the Year by the readers of Prehistoric Times magazine.

Through detailed illustrations and descriptive narrative, readers will experience a thrilling, thoroughly enjoyable ride through the most popular time period of prehistory. What would it be like to see a living, breathing dinosaur? Following in the footsteps of Ancient Earth The Early Cretaceous , this next installment, The Late Jurassic , will take readers further back in time to a period when giants ruled the land and early mammals began to secure their place alongside the dinosaurs. The Late Jurassic period was home to many species of our favorite dinosaurs, such as Apatosaurus (or Brontosaurus), Allosaurus, and Stegosaurus, to name a few. The Late Jurassic includes the latest paleontological findings to build an accurate depiction of the dinosaurs, environment, and wildlife of the period. Due to the abundance of fossils available for both plants and animals of this period, the book paints a vivid, realistic picture of the flora and fauna of the time, with more emphasis on hunting and defensive tactics, as well as early mammals and their role in the planet's evolution, for a thrilling, thoroughly enjoyable ride through the most popular time period of prehistory. Written and illustrated in the style of a naturalist's notebook, the reader is given a first-hand account of what it would be like to stand alongside some of the largest creatures to ever walk the earth.

I have decided that this will be a DINO-SUMMER for me! This beautiful book kicks off a summer of reading about a subject I loved as a child. This book really makes you feel as if you are on an very important expedition; trying to find the next 'new' dino out there that you can name - wonderfully illustrated!

This book is GORGEOUS. It is one of the best dinosaur books I've ever seen, and I was a big dino fan as a kid and also just went through my kids' own dino phase (we read A LOT of dino books!) This is shelved in the juvenile section but, honestly, I think adult dino fans would find it completely suitable and it's coffee-table quality in terms of the illustrations. The dinosaurs are not made to look unduly ferocious, though some of it is fairly realistic with dinos fighting or eating (bloody) meat. So, some sensitive young readers might want to give it a pass. It's also chock-full of fascinating information, but can be perused by younger readers simply for the incredible art. Note that it is an Ancient Earth Journal, not simply a "dinosaur" book, so in addition to sections on theropods, sauropods, and ornithischians, this one includes also pterosaurs and mammals. There is a pronunciation key in the back. Unfortunately, no bilbiography, but Gregory S. Paul is an expert in the field and written numerous books himself (mentioned in the back) so I don't mind. Highly recommend along with the companion volume, Ancient Earth Journal: The Early Cretaceous: Notes, drawings, and observations from prehistory.

Wow! What a fascinating book. If you have a dinosaur lover in your house I highly recommend running out and buying this book. Not only is the book very informative while still being child appropriate, the illustrations are absolutely stunning. Alonso has done an amazing job of creating lifelike illustrations of the different dinosaurs while sharing little snippets of information about what makes each of the included dinosaurs unique. Most of the dinosaurs that are included have a four-page spread that gives basic information about the dinosaur (Location observed, family, length, height, weight, temperament) as well as an illustration comparing the size of the dinosaur to a human being. The third and fourth pages give additional interesting facts about the animal. Even skeletons of a few animals are included to highlight specific features that made the different species unique. A fabulously delicious book for those young dinosaur lovers in your life.

The colorful illustrations by Lucy Lletherland are outstanding!
Beginning with a world map, this amazing book covers many animals from all over the world along with maps, trivia and other information. The last two pages of the adventures lists 58 animals for the individual(s) to look up and review again. There is a large index at the end of the book.
This would be ideal for Summer Reading Programs or classroom settings because of the size of the book.
There is a lot of useful information for YA and adults as well as children.

This earns Five Stars.

Simply marvelous! The information about all the the dinosaurs and animals is fantastic and the illustrations that went along with each one was beautiful. I loved how the whole book was layer out; it's very easy to discover different facts and find out fun things about these creatures that I haven't known about before.

Both of these books have rather skimpy text but make up for it with gorgeous illustrations. Highly recommended for the classroom library.
