Missing In Action: A Military Romance by Holly Hart is a romance story that is a quick read and entertaining. The story is told by the H/h in alternating chapters.

The story starts in Afghanistan with Mike Carson, who is a hot Delta Force soldier and dog handler. Jake, his dog, makes all dog lovers happy with his inclusion. When Mike is severely wounded while protecting a frontline position, he is taken to the hospital at Bagram Air Force base where Katie is a nurse, who had sex with Mike previously and she hasn’t been able to forget that encounter. During Mike’s recovery, Katie is kidnapped by Taliban fighters who breach the walls of the base and Mike goes after her with Jake. They find and rescue her, but there are consequences.

The characters in this story are very likable and the sex scenes are hot and well written. The story has a wonderful ending that is extremely satisfying. You have to suspend belief on the kidnapping though, because I have never heard of this happening at this base and there is no way only one soldier would go searching for a kidnapped nurse. Also, the terrible conditions in the kennel of the service dogs, I hope, has never happened. The ARC of this book has several spelling and word use errors that need another round of editing. If you can get past these few problems, it is an entertaining, fast read.

I received this ARC from the author for free.

This book is a hot mess and the perfect example of what NOT to do when writing a book.

description

Set Up

This book takes place on "the largest military base" in Afghanistan.

FMC is a civilian nurse on base. She hates Afghanistan and wants to go home but stays because she says she can't make over 90k salary stateside.

MMC is Delta force dog handler. He's injured and his friend dies during combat in the field. He & his dog return to base where FMC is his nurse, he's deemed a hero, and the dog is impounded.

Prior to the storyline beginning, we are told that the two shared a drunken one night stand and haven't seen or heard from each other since. They do think about each other in a 'wow, that was sure hot' kinda way.

The MMCs cry. They muse about their lives and each other's lives. She saves his dog. They muse about how horrible the military conditions are and such.

^^^ That is 50% of the book. I shit you not, people. I'm waiting for something ...

description

The next 15% is one uneventful sex scene , a surprise you're pregnant, a bam the Taliban physically attack the largest base in Afghanistan on motor bikes and break the MP defenses to trudge around through housing quarters so that we can have an ...oops you've been kidnapped.

description

I get it's fiction but you've bored me to tears with these dull characters and then you have a unicorn pop up out of the puddle on the floor?!? Come on now!

Specifics

That's blunt and painful for an author. So, I'll be more specific...

1. Where is the character and plot development?

All these people do is complain, sensationalize, and bemoan about EVERYTHING.

description

If the characters are supposed to be bland, cry baby, narcissists ... Target hit.

I get it's a hell-of-a-job in Afghanistan and life over there is traumatic AF. But, the content here is 90% political and social preachy vibe , 8% character development, and 2% plot development.

Me when he's shot, they cry, they have sex, she gets kidnapped...

description

The way this is written elicits zero emo connection to them nor their plights. That's a gigantic book flaw when a reader, who actively supports the military, wounded warriors, and veterans and has direct family in the military, DOESNT CARE about the content of this book.

Is it wise to throw passive aggressive stones if you live in a glass hypocritical house?

description

I believe if I was breaking rules left and right - all the way to getting pregnant during fraternization, I wouldn't be judging and bitching about EVERYTHING and EVERYONE all around me being inept and horrible. Just saying.

Is this what you call romance?

They don't see, write, communicate, nada for months after the one night stand. They think about how great that one night was, but there's not even thoughts about reconnecting with each other. Hell, she doesn't even know his last name. Yet, when she sees him injured, she starts spewing shit about him being "her love." It's weird and not in the least romantic.

As it progresses, there's no meaningful dialogue here, no moments of intimacy or connection. It's awkward crying and one line 'trying to be cute' moments by which the reader is supposed to deduct romance and love OUTSIDE the notion she's pregnant.

description

If she wasn't pregnant would there be a book? If the answer is no, maybe, or uhmmmmmmmm, then you don't have a R-O-M-A-N-C-E! You have the adult version of a teenage 'oops, oh shit' moment.

He has to tell her that she's pregnant?

description

Ms. nurse is 3-4 months pregnant and showing typical S&S, but pregnancy never crosses her mind. Anything wrong with her can all be blamed on...

description

So, HE grabs her breasts (which he has only touched one other time months ago while drunk) and determines they're

"heavier than the last time he bedded her."

And she's...

"positively glowing, she's radiant."

description

Anyway...Therefore, she must be pregnant.

Only one thing to do before he informs her that she's preggo. Not that he thinks his former one night stand mommy to be is 'that kinda girl' , but he does need to know if she's fucked anyone else.

Once satisfied he is the only possible baby daddy candidate...

description

He informs her of her pregnant state and goes into daddy bear mode to vow love, protection, and to leave the military for the mother of his child.

description

Can you see the white picket fence? Yeah? How about the divorce six months later?~?

This scene goes down in my book of Top 20 WTF Book Moments That Should NEVER be Repeated!

description

Mommy~

From the above moment forward. The MMC should just be referred to as "mother of my/his child." No pregnancy test needed either. The breast squeeze and radiation radiating skin is the litmus test for pregnancy. Pregnancy is now just a fact that we hear at nauseam every five seconds and that these two seem to think EVERYTHING should revolve around.

Btw: if kidnapped by the Taliban, the first thing you should do is tell them you're pregnant. Not like the people famous for torturing the fuck out of people would use that Intel against you. No, I'm sure they'd say, 'aww, well let me not hurt you nice pregnant lady.'

description

For my non-southern pals, ^that^ translates to 'are you really that damn stupid?'

Attacked & Kidnapped

At this point...

description

I'm not even going to get into the undeterred bike Taliban attacking, rummaging around, and kidnapping on the largest base in Afghanistan .

Bottom Line

DNF @ Chapter 18.

I read way more of this than I should've.

I recommend to no one.

Should you choose to ignore my sage warning, then I highly recommend you keep this handy...

Mike's off fighting the Taliban. And I'm having his baby.

Katie

When I had that fling with Mike, a bad boy Delta Force dog handler, I thought I was just blowing off steam. I've seen so many soldiers come in to my hospital, half dead - I just couldn't take it any more. I needed an escape. But Mike was different. When he got sent back into the field, I couldn't get him off my mind. And then I found out I was pregnant with his baby.

So when Mike was airlifted to the hospital, I didn't care that he was a hero who'd just saved a dozen soldier's lives - I just knew I needed to save him.

Mike

The moment I saw Katie, I knew I had to have her - she was the bravest, strongest, sexiest woman I'd ever seen. When I got deployed, I thought about her every day. My platoon were sick of me talking about her, but I couldn't help it...

When I found out she was carrying my child, I knew I had to protect her, whatever the cost. And then the Taliban took her.

I'm going to save her, and my kid. And if anyone gets in my way, they're going to regret it.

My Review:

I think it was more my feeling of being burnt out on military romances that caused me to rate this book three stars than the actual book. Missing in Action is well written and has a good amount of suspense and romance, but I didn't care for the fact that as a military romance that Katie didn't care for what Mike did despite knowing what he did. It seemed a little redundant but the baby thing was quite believable considering those that know military relationships. The whole your cold is everyones cold saying is true but not really the case in this book despite the baby issue.

I did like Mike as a person, I like him as a man, and as a soldier. I also liked that he took responsibility and accountability. A rare thing indeed. Missing in Action was a good read.

This story had great potential, a Special Forces Sargent and a War Zone Nurse falling for one another when everything is turning to shit around them, but for some reason I just couldn't connect with either of the main characters. I did love Jake, the bomb sniffing army dog, though and since he played a big part in the book I gave it one more star than I was actually feeling.

This was the first book I have read by Holly Hart, I will read some of her work again it just won't be at the top of my list of things to do.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book
I was lucky enough to get this as a bonus in an arc copy of Brawlers Baby
Oh Mike, you are so much more than a hero in Delta Force, fighting in Afghanistan. Saving all those men. You are a true hero in my eyes because, although still injured, you still would do anything for the woman you love.

Who would have thought that a one night experience with Katie would change your life forever. She is sexy, feisty, loving, caring and so much more. As a nurse she is trained to looked after the soldiers but meeting Mike , she feels something more and now there is another little issue....she is pregnant with his baby.
A fantastic read, I couldn’t put it down and it also shows all the horror and emotional stress all these men and women go through in war. It makes you think. My true little hero in all of this is Jake, a German shepherd who shows unconditional and never ending love to his master. A story you just have to read at least once in your lifetime. Loved it.

This is a great short read. I love military stories and this is almost a second chance romance too. What are the odds that her patient would be the soldier she "encountered " months before?

Holly Hart A Military Romance “Missing In Action”

The focus of the book was on Mike Carson, a Delta team member who was a handler for Jake a bomb sniffing service dog and Mike’s best friend. Of course there is Katie a contracted nurse and both are stationed in Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan. The base was the largest U.S. military base as well members of NATO with over 40,000 military personnel.

As we begin the book, the Delta sent Mike and his best friend Tommy are east of Kandahar to a dangerous lookout. Even thought they were Special Ops, they were sitting ducks waiting for Taliban to show up. Mike was thinking back to three months ago when he had and Katie had been together and he couldn’t get her out of his mind.

When the Taliban did show up, Mike and Tommy were only two soldiers against wave after wave. To add insult to injury, their radios weren’t working all the time being in the middle of nowhere and help probably wouldn’t make it in time. It was a miracle that Mike and Jake his dog made it, but, his best friend didn’t.

As soon as Mike was helicoptered into Bagram hospital and Katie saw him in critical condition, she begin to give orders for his emergency surgery. Katie had thought about Mike from their encounter three months ago. She had to do everything in her power to assist the doctors to keep him alive.

Mike and Katie’s journey is just beginning. During Mike’s recovery, the Taliban breach the wall of Bagram Air Force Base and kidnap Katie. No one is going after her so Mike must save her.

Take this journey with Mike and Katie and find out if Mike even find Katie after she is kidnapped.

What doesn’t work?
Having studied Bagram Air Force Base in the past and there has never been a total breach of the walls of the base, at least never reported. If something like that happened, there would be an immediate and full force response by many military personnel. At least I could not find where the enemy breached the walls of the Air Force Base. If that is the case, then Mike would not have been the only one that heard the breach and then gone after Katie…. Just saying?

The scenes about the service dogs that were held in terrible facilities, food and water deprived and cages not cleaned of their own excrement. I have always heard that the service dogs were treated with great care and respect. BUt, perhaps I am wrong??

I received an ARC of this title from the publisher in exchange for an honest review and here it is, a generous 2.5 stars.

This is the first book I've read by this author, and she does have some skills as a writer, but in this case my willing suspension of disbelief only went so far. From the beginning, if two soldiers are on watch high on a mountaintop in Afghanistan, why are they talking to each other rather than maintaining silence? Why are they tossing rocks down the hillside? Why do they need the company of a bomb-sniffing dog up there? Did is not occur either of these soldiers that they were giving away their position? These are both Delta Force operatives mind you--the elite. How was the enemy allowed to get within 100 yards of their position without either of them, or their trained dog, noticing?

Further, I did have a hard time coming to terms with the author's lack of research about military protocol, the ease with which Mike, the hero, made Sergeant in Delta Force in such an incredibly short time, military doctors being sent home, leaving only a couple of nurses to care for the sick and injured alone, including being expected to perform surgical tasks, without anyone bothering to secure either the Army base or the hospital? Really? And that's just for starters--why did no one other than an injured hero go after Katie when she was taken by the Taliban, who overran the base with only 5 men on motorcycles? Mike has been told that he's being considered for the silver star for bravery in action yet is being accused of going AWOL when he's the only person to go after Katie?

Let's consider our heroine, Katie. Why is she still on the base anyway? She would have been sent home as soon as anyone suspected she was pregnant--and she's a registered nurse--how could she ignore the obvious? She's certainly a dedicated nurse yet she meets and has unprotected sex with Mike who is deployed the next day and she doesn't even bother to learn his last name? She's certainly feisty and has guts but the way she responds to orders at a military hospital was also hard to believe, and we are told absolutely nothing else about her life back in the U.S., other than learning that she's making a lot more money as a nurse in Afghanistan. In addition to her nursing duties, why is she also the only person in charge of Mike's physical therapy?

While I enjoyed the romance part of this romantic suspense novel and the sizzle between the two main characters, the aforementioned flaws kept me rolling my eyes until the last page. Finally, why on earth was this novel titled Missing in Action, when no one was missing in action?

I loved this book! The story was exciting and hot and sweet and scary and depressing, all at the same time. Did I mention emotional? It's about Mike and Katie, and mostly takes place in Afghanistan. Mike is a special forces soldier. Katie is a civilian nurse, signed on to work in the war zone for one year to earn some big bucks. She only has a few more months to go, and is looking forward to go home. They had a one-night stand, and neither of them has been able to get his/her mind off the other, though they haven't seen each other again. Thinking of Katie lightens Mike's mind while he's out manning the Afghanistan hillside. Mike is also the handler of a military dog named Jake.
This story deals with the realities of war in a very descriptive and realistic way. It was maybe a little upsetting to me, because as an American who likes to take things easy and smile and say “thanks to our troops”, the actuality of what they deal with isn't something I like to look at closely. But this book put it right in my face. I learned a few things I maybe didn't really want to know about, but now when I say thanks, I'll really mean it and it's not just a cliché. In that way this book will stay with me.
I had a hard time putting this book down. Mike and Katie are both such realistic, human characters, I fell in love with them both. Oh, and Jake too, of course. I usually like to tell a little more of what the book's about in a review, but in this case I don't want to give anything away. Let's just say Mike gets injured.
If you love military romances, or war stories, or just want to have a better idea of what it may be like over there, I highly recommend this book. It is a standalone with no cliffhanger, and I really want to tell you whether it has a HEA or not but I don't want to give it away! Read it! It's an excellent, quick read.

3.5 stars!

One thing I really loved about this story was how it showed the camaraderie between soldiers, especially those in special forces who only have their partner at times to rely on as well as the relationship between animals and soldiers. The depression that Mike suffers after losing his friend, the pain, the anger, and guilt are honest emotions that these troops really feel. But these losses aren't only felt my the troops, they are also felt by those who are volunteering to help care for them like Katie is this story. It's not a job for the weak and takes strength to do what they do everyday.

A couple things kept me from giving this a full 4 stars. First at the end of the book I go so confused that the author jumped years ahead, and instead of making those last chapters an epilogue or even putting "2 years later" it was just put right it with no explanation. Second, I'm not sure if it's because I'm a military spouse and have lived through all this pain and war, but Katie really aggravated me when she said she didn't like the kind of life Mike could provide for their child with his constant deployments and the worry she may end up raising a child alone. As a spouse/GF you know that with a man in the military you are taking on his job and will come second.

*ARC received from Red Cape Romance in return for an honest review*
War stories aren't really my thing but this book captured my attention from the beginning and kept it all the way through. This story seems very true to life. Mike and Katie are both stationed in Afghanistan, and had one memorable night together. She is a nurse contracted to be there but the horrible conditions are almost more than she can take. Mike is with special forces and survives a harrowing engagement with the Taliban. Katie is the one person who helps him find his way back and when they realize she is pregnant life takes on a new meaning. When Katie is captured by the Taliban, an injured Mike knows he has to get her back and will do whatever it takes to save her and their unborn baby. Mike is a real hero and both Katie and Mike are very likable characters. This story has romance, great characters, and a really good plot. I could not put it down.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I was contacted through random selection to read this ARC. (That's not always a pleasant experience, I have read a lot of books that I wouldn't have otherwise.) In this case, I have to say I am very glad I did.

I read an ARC that desperately needed another round of editing. So I can't say for the final copy how bad the grammar, words, and sentence structure is, but I can say grit your teeth because the story is worth it.

A good hero is hard to come by, but it seems like Katie found an Elite hero in Mike. Delta Force trained soldier who does everything he can for her? Goes out of his way to find her? Yes, definitely a keeper.

But can he keep her? A lot of things can go wrong in a war zone. Can they also go right?

It's a sweet story with plenty of action to keep you going. Dog lovers will fall for Jake, just like Katie does. Everyone will fall for Mike.

Loved this one!! I was hooked from page one and couldn't put it down. There is suspense, romance and kidnapping. Katie is a military nurse. Mike is a Delta Force dog handler. They have a one night stand that sticks in their minds. He gets injured on duty and is brought into the hospital she works at. She immediately tries to help. She finds out she is pregnant and doesn't know how to tell him. Meanwhile she rescues his dog from a filthy Kennel and has the attendant turns the kennel around. Max is falling hard and wants his child but then she gets kidnapped and he is the only one going after her. Can they make it work? Will he be able to rescue her?

I was given this e-book by the publisher for the purpose of an honest review. My conclusions are my own. I was not compensated in any way.

I love a military romance and this is a really good story. If has all I look for with Mike the Delta Force hero, Katie the nurse heroine and Jake the trusty canine. Katie meets Mike at an Army base in Afghanistan and she doesn't even get his last name. He was different, something between them just clicked. She hopes she sees him again. Only the next time she sees him is on an emergency helicopter about to crash land at the hospital. He has been shot and lost a lot of blood, will he survive his injuries? These two will go threw a lot to try to be together and maybe make a life together. Will Mike want the same things as Katie? Will they be able to take Jake with them?
There are missing words and I think more editing is needed but give this story a change and you will enjoy it too.

I think this author has a real knack for setting. I felt like I was in Afghanistan with the H. I could picture everything happening around me and that initial description is what drew me into the story. This was a quick read, which left out some important things for me. I understand it's sometimes hard to get everything in a story when it's not full length, but I felt like I didn't really know much about the characters other than their lives overseas. I wanted a little more. I also wanted more page time between the couple before the H's injury. When they got back together it felt rushed because I didn't feel that connection. Now, after they got back together and the story started moving, I really enjoyed this book. It had lots of action, a protective hero, a loyal dog and a couple who were perfect for each other.

Katie is a nurse fighting for her sanity.
After 9 months of trying to keep her psyche complete Katie finally runs into the man who brought her a semblance on peace in a world full of chaos. Only problem is that now he is fighting for his life after being ambushed by the Taliban.
Mike is part of the delta group and as such he is one of the elite. But when he sees his best friend die right in front of him while fighting for their lives he battles for his and those who live in the compounds lives.
When they realise that their one night together so many months ago resulted in a child they go on a wild adventure of kidnapping, politics, and so much more
This was a great romance story that really brings the characters to life.

I received an ARC of Missing in Action from Hot New Books in exchange to an honest review.
Missing in Action is a great military story by Holly Hart. The story takes place in Afghanistan, where love is not supposed to happen. It is the story about Mike, a Delta Force dog handler, Katie, a contractor nurse, and of course, Jake, an almost human German Shepherd.
Missing in Action takes us on the journey of Mike and Katie as they navigate their way through newfound love while under fire in Afghanistan. We see Katie become a confident woman who refuses to be pushed around, while Mike, a military hero, risks his military career to protect Katie from harms way.
This is a sweet romance that will tear at your heart!

This book was tacked into the end of Hung, I ended up reading it just because I didn't want to sift through my TBR to find something else. There are several things I enjoyed about this book, the characters themselves are good as individuals, but I didn't feel much chemistry between them together.

I had a huge issue with all of the plot holes and/or missing pieces within scenes. It distracted from the flow of the story and I found myself skimming.

I completely appreciate fiction, it's my favorite flavor of book, but there is a place where you need to be realistic with plot devices or things just feel sloppy. The military aspects, especially the dog handling parts, were not well researched. Definitely off-putting.

I enjoyed the story and found it hard to put down. The characters are likable and their relationships are exciting and evocative of great emotion in the reader. The plot line is well drawn, with surprises in all the right places. The details of setting seem well researched, and the author writes of combat with insight usually seen only in male authors. The first-person narrative jumps back and forth between Mike and Katie, each chapter headed by the name of the character speaking. The story is for mature readers, with some profanity and a few explicit sexual encounters. In all, it is a winsome romance with action, pathos, and some humor.

Love. One thing you don't find in the middle of a war, or can you. Where stress is high, accidents don't just happen and danger approaches from everywhere. When danger strikes there is hope for one person to actually help, in the mean time it's time to plot and escape to help delay. One thing leads to another and yet somehow a tiny miracle comes into play, so does survival and freedom.
Really good read, immensely enjoyed it. Action, love, danger, sacrifice.

This was a great story that showed perfectly some of the horror that our men in uniforms go threw to protect our way of lives. It was a powerful story about the love of a soldier and a battle nurse and the soldier dog he works with. It was also a story about some of the bad things our government does to the wonderful people that protect and serve. I received this book free in exchange for an honest review. I must admit that the editing was not great, although the author offered another copy with corrections.

Two people reach out to one another and create something new and wonderful. They meet at a low point in their lives and it takes more pain to bring them together.

I liked the characters. They seemed like real people who don't always make the best choices but try the best they can to do good. There is a lot of focus on the military and the situations they face - both good and bad.

This book is about Katie, a civilian nurse at an army hospital in Afghanistan, and Mike, a Sgt. Delta Force dog handler. Katie and Mike have a one night stand right before Mike left the base. Katie and Mike meet again when he is brought back broken and nearly dead and she saves his life. There are quite a few things in this book that doesn't make a lot of sense, most of it was the way things happened with the military. However it is written well and I liked the idea of this book.

Light reading

I really enjoyed the characters they were interesting and completely enthralling. Mike seemed like a really decent guy and I'm glad he wasn't a coward. I think Katie was a very strong and confident character that didn't take any stuff from people but she was soft too. Overall it's a good light read

This was a fun and interesting read if not at times corny and very unrealistic. I liked the characters Mike and Katie and of course Jake. It held my attention but my recommendation to the author is to do more research on the army and the reality of what really goes on.

Great story!

This was a great story right from the start! I loved it. Not what I thought it would be and it was a great change. The story line was strong with great characters and I could not put it down!! I would read more stories from this author any day!!

This book was actually a bonus story to another of the author's novels. The story was enjoyable, but I had an extremely hard time getting passed all of the errors in this book. My OCD brain can't deal with it.
