Distopic space opera - A novel of a future owned by a malign corporate run government that kills the first alien visitors to steal the technology and use it to create & control their own hegemony of planets. Rissa Kerguelen is a ward of the state but unwilling to submit she escapes to join the underground resistance fighters. She trains then rises to command in the rebellion. The rebellion is the remnant of a once powerful corporation from before UET took total control.

This is one of my all-time favourite books ... and series. Love it.
