Charlie Greene, the lone literary agent at a colorful Hollywood talent agency and a part-time sleuth, has her hands full when someone murders Gloria, the sharp-tongued office "witch."

What a fun read! On my shelf for many years and my copy is signed by the author. I got to meet her at a reading she and 2 other mystery writers gave at Barnes & Noble years ago. Her reading sparked my interest then — I don’t know why it took so long for me to pick it up. I really enjoyed the interaction between Charlie and her daughter, Libby. I am glad to learn there are more books in the series and that Ms Millhiser has written other books as well. I will be on the hunt at the used book stores I visit.
This book was just ok. It really didn't hold my interest, nor did I particularly care about the characters. It took me forever to slog my way through the book even though it wasn't very long. I kept going purely for the principle of the thing. It wasn't horrible, it was just ok. I would not pick up another in the series.
I didn't realize how long ago this was originally published, but it doesn't stop it from being unique and interesting. However, one thing that could be a sign of the times but angered me throughout--and I almost stopped reading it each time--was the slur used for a gay character. I understand that the other characters, not the main character, were calling him this name, but she seemed to accept it. I hope I don't encounter more of this language in the next book.
Slow moving and too many characters seem to be key features of this series. The second book was okay, but nothing special. Not sure I'll attempt another.
I loved the Mirror---so I tried another of her books from the library and was bored before the 2nd chapter began....and realized that it was not going to happen and I was not going to finish it
DEATH OF THE OFFICE WITCH - Okay Millhiser, Marlys - 1st in series
As a busy talent agent and single mother to a willful teenage daughter, forays into the paranormal are not exactly Charlie's top priority. But when Gloria, the loathed office receptionist, is found dead—and Charlie admits to being the first person to talk to the victim after the murder—there's no turning back. The police, impressed by Charlie's psychic powers, insist on her help in their investigation, and Charlie soon discovers that Gloria more than lived up to her nickname of "the office witch"—she was a member of a local coven. Unwillingly drawn into the bewitching and bewildering goings-on, Charlie realizes she must mobilize all her powers to silence Gloria's insistent voice from beyond the grave.
Hollywood literary agent Charlie has a stressful job, a lion mother out in Colorado, a teen-aged daughter who won't listen to her, and maybe stomach cancer (or it could be indigestion, who knows?). She doesn't need the creepy voice of the missing office receptionist demanding Charlie's help. And when the body is found, she especially doesn't need a homicide detective who believes in New Age phenomena deciding that Charlie should use her non-existent psychic abilities to solve the crime.
I loved the first Charlie Green mystery but this one is badly written. Too hard to follow the characters. Who is saying what??????????? Very irritating.
