reviewed in retrospect July 2009:
I had a health scare in 2007. It was horrible. My body was constantly in pain. I had been diagnosed with interstitial cystitis (cystitis means a bladder infection, but interstitial cystitis means that there is no infection present, jst all the pain and symmptoms.)
When I read this book, I realized that my health problems that could be traced back almost 2 years. I had several respitory infections that triggered my asthma, that were treated with anti biotics and steroid shots. Then I had digestive symptoms for several months. Then, after getting the flu, I started having trouble staying awake, which led to depression. I went to a doctor for that, but then had started getting migraines. For monthes I had migraine headaches at least twice a week. and Then the Interstitial cystitis.
But this book showed me that all of these could be connected. The antibiotics and steroid shots both diminish the good bacteria that we need in our digestive systems. If theses aren't repopulated after antibiotics or steroid shots, or viruses, then bad bacteria and yeast can repopulate the gut. These bad things in the gut can produce toxins and highjack nutrients away from your body.
The anti-yeast diet is no fun, but it helped me a lot. a year and a half later, I try to keep my carbs down and am more aware of food allergies and how I am affected by the things I eat. Digestion is back to normal. The migraines have gone from 2-3 a week to once a month. I feel more awake and aware than I had felt for a couple of years. I was really foggy headed for quite a while. I'm no longer depressed. It also led me to being more knowledgable about the bio-medical treatments that have been helping my autistic son.
The book was very informative and connected a lot things I hadn't seen. It was easy to read and understand.

Very interesting information about how foods effect the body. After dealing with constant fatigue and just an overall sense of blah, I'm almost positive I have a yeast condition. There is a quiz in Chapter 2 that will help you determine if you are suffering from excess yeast. A score of 180 or above means you are extremely likely to be suffering from yeast overgrowth. I scored a 250. Yikes! I plan on using the suggestions and following the candida diet the book suggests. I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially women, who are constantly tired and cannot understand why. This book will help you figure out why.

Excellent resource if you suffer from recurring yeast infections, or if you have other symptoms that are unexplained. Anyone with IBS would benefit, because most likely it's a yeast overgrowth.

February 20, 2015Well, according to this book I'm overrun with yeast and it's causing all my problems. . . . It's convincing enough that I'm going to try the diet. *Gulp*

Easy-to-read, straightforward. Perhaps a bit overly simplistic. I'm not sure that I believe it all goes back to yeast, but some advice that seems generally good pertaining to basic diet and supplements that might be helpful. The self-assessment in chapter 2 seems a bit over-the-top, I would love to see the research method on it. And how they come up with those item scores. Could be a good discussion with your doctor if you're suffering with chronic issues without a clear etiology.

Excellent, highly informative and readable guide to dealing with systemic yeast infections. One of the author's virtues is his flexible attitude and his repeated statements that the condition and treatment vary from person to person--something many doctors deny or ignore about diseases.

This book is informative but I'm not sure it is believable. Most people have yeast in their system and that is normal. My GI doctor said not to follow this. I believe him and my sister in law. There is not medical proof behind this book.

Women-centric distillation and compilation of Dr. Crook's other writings on yeast minus most of the drawings present in the earlier books. It's fairly updated and has plenty of footnotes and other resources that readers can explore.

Did not like the layout of the book. Also took issue with the diet, which wasn’t clear enough about why some foods weren’t included anywhere (no fruit, but what about lemons and limes?) I think there are better nutrition books out there on the topic of yeast and Candida diet.

If even some of it is true, it was worth reading. Could change a great deal in terms of diet, supplements, etc.

If you're sick and tired of being sick and tired, this book might give you some help toward feeling better.

It's like putting a bunch of puzzle pieces from my life together and finally seeing the big picture, even if it's still fuzzy.

I found this an informative book. If you think you might be suffering from a build of yeast in your body and have the symptoms...read on. Lots of ideas .
