My husband was given this book last evening for his 60th birthday by his Mom. It was originally published in 1958, the year of his birth, by the John Deere Tractor Company. As a story it has no plot and only consists of the machines in Fowler’s Farm playing a verbal game of one-up-man-ship about who is the most important vehicle. It reads like a precursor to Thomas the Tank Engine Storybook; it is easy to see the appeal for little children who enjoy playing with tractors* and such. The vehicles are cleverly personified in the bright green and gold John Deere colors. At any rate, there must have been something to it, because my husband ended up working for JD during his teenage years and still talks about it.

This is 1997 reprint of the original which my M-i-L says was more like a Little Golden Book.

*Our daughters were serious Thomas fans and I seem to recall a tractor personality in that series.

I would give one and a half stars to this book.
Not many classics of literature are told from the perspective of John Deere farm equipment, but this one just might be considered that. Very reminiscent of the early going in Esther Forbes's "Johnny Tremain", this story of the equipment on one rural farm, and how these diverse machines get along and work together for the good of the farm and the benefit of their farmer, is an excellent parable of teamwork, and of what it means to subjugate one's own ego for the greater good of a bigger effort. It is a well told and well illustrated tale.

Johny tractor likes to think that he is the most important piece of equipment on Farmer Fowlers farm. Throughout the story the other pieces of farm equipment speaks their piece as to why they are so important. Foreach other piece of equipment that speaks Johny has a smart remark as to why he is more important. Then one of the other tractors speaks up and calls Johny out and Johny realizes they are all equally important.

As a child I was obsessed with the idea of John Deere tractors and this book was one of the books my parents read pretty frequently. As a farm kid this book was very important because it was a fun engaging book that lead me to really understand what each piece of equipment was for. For these reason this book was rated a 5 star review in my opinion

As I grew up on a farm I never got to read these books for some reason. Maybe because I was not able to read being blind. But I definitely am enjoying getting to read all these books now. Even if they are just a quick read in some kids books.
