Until I Love Again by Jerry Eicher is a wonderful Amish romance. It is the second book in the St Lawrence County Amish series but can be read as a stand-alone.
The Amish and Englisha worlds collide within the novel creating a palpable tension. Susanna, on her rumspringa is torn between her Amish upbringing and the pull of the Englisha world. "A woman's place is in the home, and not out in the Englisha worlde." Jerry Eicher shows how these totally opposite cultures can cause conflict and distress within the family. "I'm trying to make peace with my heritage." It is hard to be true to yourself and to obey your parents who love you.
The Amish way of life is presented in the novel. It seems very simple and loving on the surface, however dig deeper and one finds there is a tight control on people's behaviour.
Love permeates the novel. Love motivates the courses of action by various characters. This love can be smothering though.
There is the whole debate of nature versus nurture within the novel. What makes us who we are? Susanna has been bought up as Amish, so why does she yearn for the Englisha way of life? And where did her musical talent come from? Read the novel and see if you can decide the answers.
Jerry Eicher shows the devastating effects of keeping a secret for years. Sooner or later the truth will emerge causing pain and anguish.
The novel has the theme of the sins of the father's. "The sins of the parents should [not] be held to the child's account." People have long memories and like to remember past indiscretions. However there is no condemnation in Christ Jesus. Our past is behind us and we cannot change it. "We can't change the past but we can help shape the future with our choices."
Until I Love Again deals with the topic of arranged marriages. It seems alien to us that the parents or even the Bishop should suggest life partners. The Amish believe marry first, and love will follow. The reader witnesses the conflict this can cause in some characters whilst others embrace this ideal.
Family is of vital importance. This comes through in both the Amish and Englisha worlds.
Until I Love Again was a wonderful read. Jerry Eicher has the talent of writing in such a way that I can 'see' my way through the novel. I could also empathise with Susanna and 'felt' her dilemma and torment.
An absolutely superb novel. I can highly recommend it.

Until I love again is book #2 in the St. Lawrence County Amish series. Even though it's apart of a series they can both read as stand alone books. The book started off great followings Susanna's rumspringa and time with her English friend Joey. As a got further into the book I started feeling like the days she spent were becoming redundant.
Once the story lined picked back up it was like an emotional roller coaster and I felt for Susanna. She was going through the struggle of staying Amish and marrying a Man she didn't love or, jumping the fence to follow in her Mother's ways. I honestly didn't see the story ending the way it did. I was a little upset about the decision until I finished the book and realized it was a great ending.
I recommend reading this book once it's released September 1, 2016

Suffering cleanses the heart of what doesn't belong there. Even in me this suffering can produce good.
Susanna has been given her freedom in her rumspringa and her father is anxious for it to end as she develops a friendship with Joey an English young man. Her father has had his own heart ache with the English and is fearful for his daughter's future. Susanna is beautiful inside and out but she feels the tension of the English way of life. A secret of her family that is known to the community but not known to Susanna changes her heart as she struggles to know who she is. Marriage is important to the Amish community and with this secret, Susanna's father is fearful that Susanna will be damaged. When a young widower with two small children becomes enraptured with Susanna and dreams of her becoming his wife and being her "savior", will the tension end in Susanna's heart as she is pulled between two worlds and two different men.
I love an Amish story that brings out the tension of the English and the Amish lifestyles. If you follow after Christ, you will appreciate the pull of Susanna's heart as she struggles to remain faithful to the will of God, her family and to the integrity of what marriage is. Her father wanting the best for his daughter, encourages her to marry a man that she does not love but will learn to love. Susanna in her freedom of rumspringa, learns something about herself that causes her to reflect her heart. She is mindful and respectful as she goes thru this struggle of where she belongs.
The two men in her life are so different. Ernest the Amish widower is prideful as he is forced to learn some lessons of his own. Joey is gentle and patient as he waits for Susanna to work thru the tension of her heart. I loved the relationships that were developed and the hearts that were broken and healed with mercy and grace.

Volume number 2 in the St. Lawrence County Amish (can be read as a standalone) is about a young Amish woman, Susanna Miller. Susanna is on her rumspringa - her "running around time" prior to being baptized and becoming a member of the Amish church. However, Susanna has gone a little too far in her freedom with some of the Englischers. One friend in particular, Joey Macalister, has become a "special friend" although nothing untoward has happened, except that she has visited his home and discovered his family's piano. Both of them realize that she has the gift of music, but for the Amish, instrumental music is forbidden.
Susanna's daett has given her much freedom on her rumspringa, perhaps too much, and the reason is that he remembers his own rumspringa and his feelings and actions. But when he finds out that she has been spending time in a young man's home, he immediately tells Susanna to end her rumspringa and marry a man of his choosing, a widower with two young children. Susanna is aghast. She loves her father and doesn't want to do anything that would cause him pain, but her heart is very drawn toward Joey, and she doesn't want anything to do with the widower. While she does her best to be obedient and to pull her heart back into line with her Amish faith and family, she slowly begins to realize that there is a secret about her life that everyone knows but her. Until I Love Again is a book that keeps you engaged from page one. I cannot say enough good things about the book. It provokes emotion in you as the reader because you are so engaged in the story.
Susanna thought she was a typical Amish woman, but she learns a secret about her past that changes her life forever. She learns she had an English Mamm who died when she was an infant. She was raised by her natural Amish father and his wife who gave her a typical Amish upbringing. The community forgave her father for his transgression with an Englisher but was much less understanding of Susanna's situation. The men in the community were not inclined to marry her due to her English Mamm and their fears she may "jump the fence" back into the English world. There is one man, a widower, Ernest, who agrees to marry Susanna thus ending the fears the community has about her. Susanna receives much pressure to marry Ernest despite the fact that her world has been turned upside down and she does not love him. Susanna met a young man, Joey, during her rumspringa and they have remained friends. Susanna receives much emotional support for Joey but the relationship is forbidden. Susanna has to decide whether or not to remain in the Amish community or enter the English community. She feels as if she has one foot in both worlds but does not really belong to either.
The characters were so well defined. You get to experience the emotions each character has as the story unfolds and as secrets continue to unravel. The ending was so perfect. Eicher is an incredible author and he has really out done himself this time.

I found myself with missed feelings for this book, although I can say I like the book and at times there were tears, other times I was frustrated because I really would have liked a bible quote like so many of me favorite Authors are good at doing in there books to show the Amish faith.
In this book you will meet Susanne Miller and travel her road with her as she struggles to find where she truly belongs. I had to wonder while reading this book although I know this author is ex-Amish how much of what I'm reading so far fetched?
I know this is Amish fiction but with other Authors the realism of facts within the books is what draws me to them. Whit that said if you want a fun story at that will make you happy at times and sad at times will make you shed a tear then this is your book.

I really got a little boring with this book it has me going in circles it took to long to get to the point of what was really going to happen to the main characters I really did not enjoy reading this book.

A very heart warming book. This book is not your typical Amish book. A young woman who loves her family and not sure what she wants. A good approach to the Amish romance.

Disappointed in this book for many reasons. Not a Christian story, in my mind. Could say more but that’s the biggest point. Look elsewhere if you want good Amish or Christian fiction. Sorry.

I thoroughly enjoyed the 2nd book in the St. Lawrence County Amish. I would highly recommend this book that is filled with love, hope and restoration.

I really enjoyed this book. I admit that at first I was a little upset by how adamant Susanna's father was about her getting married to someone who she didn't love but as the story progressed I started to see why he acted the way that he did. Not only that, I started to think about how hurt I would be if I were his situation. While Susanna had not committed to the church and she would still allowed to see her family if she left her community— it just wouldn't be the same. In many ways it would be like losing your daughter. Further, it would be seeing your child step outside of faith to be a part of a world that you are set apart from. I understood Susanna's father more after I thought about these things and reflected on how I'd react to my daughter turning from everything that I had taught her. We have so many hopes and dreams for our children and I imagine it hurts we those dreams do not become reality.
I feel like this book was excellent in giving the main character, Susanna her own voice and the freedom to make her own choices. I sometimes feel that characters in this genre are bent to the will of the parent so this spin was very refreshing. I also appreciated the love that was evident in her family despite their differences and misunderstandings.
One character that I didn't like in this book was Ernest. That man was infuriating! Ernest was so blinded by his own desires that he failed to see what God wanted. Despite my distaste for the man, I feel like he has an important part in this story and that is to learn to take a step back and ask God what He wants rather than telling Him what we want. When we make decisions for ourselves we often fail to see the whole picture and see only what we want to see.
As usual, I really enjoyed Jerry Eicher's writing. I appreciate his spiritual insight that he weaves into his books and as usual, this is a book and author that I would recommend to others who enjoy the genre.This review was originally posted on A Simply Enchanted Life

I have come to love Jerry Eicher's writings as authentic Amish lifestyle written into a novel. He does what other Amish novel writers seldom do--he writes about people who make hard decisions whether to remain Amish or adopt an Englischa lifestyle, and he writes about the ones who leave the Amish church and the pathway that took them there. Such is the story of Susanna Miller and Joey MacAlister.
Susanna is finishing her rumspringa and works at a feed store in town. Her parents have been lax about her running around days and now there is a man who wants to marry her. So her parents are cutting her rumspringa short and encouraging her to accept the suit of Ernest Helmuth--a man who wants a frau and a mamm to his two small girls. Susanna wants nothing to do with him, but her parents push without allowing her to make up her own mind. The harder her parents push, the harder she pushes back--sneaking around to see Joey, escaping whenever Ernest comes over, whatever she has to do. It seems that when Ernest shows up, he talks AT Susanna without letting her get a word in edgewise.
Her Daed wants this marriage because he holds secrets that will devastate Susanna. When the secrets come out, she does the only thing that will bring her peace--she calls Joey. That one action sets the course for the rest of the book.
Susanna is a character for whom it is very easy to sympathize. She's between the proverbial rock and hard place with no easy way out. It's more than she can handle, but Joey has the perfect release for her--a piano at his parents' house. She can pour out her heart making music. By using the keys, her feelings and emotions become vibrant and alive for everyone around her.
This is the best book I've read so far this summer. Until I Love Again is one of the The St. Lawrence County Amish series, and is so hard to put down with so many things to recommend it. I can't list them all here. Five Stars, Two Thumbs Up, and a piano piece straight from the heart.

My Review:
This is one of those Amish stories that doesn't leave a real good feeling in my stomach much less my heart. It seems bad all the way around. The writing is superb, as always but the subject matter is a little upsetting to say the least. But tackle it we must. The author, Jerry Eicher can take and attack a story from all angles and this one is no different.
Susanna is not really truly proud of herself and all that went down during her rumspringa and most kids aren't I would say. The Amish lead somewhat sheltered lives so when they are released into the wilds of this world they can find themselves in dire straits and that's not a good thing.
Susanna is going to have to make a decision about her life, so she is definitely at a crossroads, of sorts. Her family will forbid her to fly the coop so she is torn beyond belief as to wait to do next but she feels that life calling to her. I really didn't understand why the book ended the way it did. I wanted a better ending.
A great addition to the series, just wish the ending was a little better. Fell in love with Susanna from the beginning.

Her family will forbid her to fly the coop so she is torn beyond belief as to wait to do next but she feels that life calling to her. I really didn't understand why the book ended the way it did. I wanted a better ending.
A great addition to the series, just wish the ending was a little better. Fell in love with Susanna from the beginning.

Until I Love Again by Jerry S. Eicher is second book in The St. Lawrence County Amish series. Susanna Miller is the final days of her rumspringa. She is friends with Englischer, Joey Macalister. On Susanna’s birthday, Joey has a birthday greeting put up on the sign at the seed and feed store. Susanna’s father, Ralph is not pleased. Ralph has given Susanna a lot of leeway during her rumspringa (which Susanna managed to extend quite far without his knowledge), but that is now at an end. Susanna’s parents insist that she start taking Baptismal classes and start keeping her close to home. They are even talking with Widower Ernest Helmuth wishes to marry Susanna (he is very determined). He knows the secret that Ralph Miller has kept from his daughter. Susanna is taking the classes, but she is not sure she wishes to stay Amish. Susanna needs to decide which life is really for her: Amish or English. Will Ralph’s secret help Susanna with her decision and how will affect Susanna (and her family)?
I found Until I Love Again to be a little unrealistic. No one (not even in the Amish) can be forced to marry in this day and age. I did not understand why any father would want their daughter to marry Ernest Helmuth (he was obsessed and not in a good way). I had trouble enjoying this book, because it felt unreal. If it was set in the 1800s I could understand (a wee bit), but not in 2016 in the United States. While Until I Love Again is the second book in the series, it can be read alone. The book is heavy on the religious aspect which I found unappealing. It needed a lighter touch. The writing is nice and the book is easy to read (flows well). It is just not my favorite book by this author. I give Until I Love Again 3 out of 5 stars (it was okay).

Ernest Helmuth is very persistent and controlling, and he is determined to have Susanna as his new bride. His two little girls are just adorable and need a new mother. His sister has been kind enough to help him care for his home and his daughters, but she is of marriageable age herself and is very fond of a young Amish man in the church. Susanna enjoyed her rumspringa time a little too much for her family and the community's taste. But does that explain why she hasn't been invited to ride home with anyone from the singings? Susanna has met a wonderful Englisha friend in Joey and his family as well. They are very good friends but her family does NOT approve. Will he lead her away from the church or will she marry Ernest and stay? and what is the secret that Ernest is holding over her head?
This book is very interesting. I did wonder though about the treatment that Susanna receives from the Amish community and the eligible young men? I don't want to spoil the story for readers in telling what this treatment is and why she receives it, but in other Amish novels, I thought things were done in a different way for young people in her position. The author was raised in an Amish home so I'm sure he is correct. I wonder why other authors show a different perspective? This does make the plot very unique compared to others I have read. Readers will enjoy learning about the Amish and Susanna's love interests.
I rated this book 4 stars and am sure that other readers will love this book.

OH MY, OH MY, OH MY! It has been a while since I've read one of Jerry's books and boy have I been missing out. Susanna's story made my heart bleed! Why would she be blamed for a sin that was not even committed by her? Not only does her family treat her differently but the community even seems to reject her, except for a man she does not love. Will her faith be enough for her to stay? This is a MUST read, one you will not want to put down until you discover which direction her life goes.

Another heart warming , with an unusual twist. Suzanna is on her rumspringa, where she has become friends with an English man, Joey. On her birthday an illuminated sign at the Seed and Feed store wishing her a happy birthday. Brought a change to the peaceful world that she has known
Her dad had been okay with what she had been doing before she was baptized. The Amish don't draw attention to themselves. Her parents decide to the agreement that Ernest wants to marry her. Having two small children who need a mother. He is insistent that she will marry him, even though she doesn't love him. What is a girl to do when it seems like there is three against what she wants. Causing her to be unhappy and missing seeing Joey. Henry her brother lets it be known that others have looked at her. But none of them came further to seeing her.She now is puzzled of why All the secrets that have been held not only by her parents, but the community. Will she marry Ernest, and obey her parents. Or is the draw for the English more for her and her love of playing the piano.

Until I Love Again is the second book written by Jerry Either in his. St. Lawrence County Amish series. When I read a series I look to see how the different stories connect, I still haven't figured this out as I finish the book. I guess that is why it could also be a stand alone book.
The characters were well described in appearance and in personalities. I wasn't thrilled with the character Ernest, he seemed alittle to strong willed almost treading on being a bully or a stalker. He was to stuck on the beauty of Susanna instead of her inner self.
Susanna is really confused as to where she fits in. She has concerns why she isn't more like her brothers. When the secret is revealed her confusion only gets worse and it seems to drag on in the story and becomes redundant. I think by repeating the same things to many times in brings the story down.
I was thrilled with the ending but I could see from the beginning that it would end like it did. Even though I was a little disappointed with some aspects of the story I would still recommend it to others.

I received this book as an ARC from Netgally for my honest opinion.
This wasn't my favorite Amish book and it felt like 3 books that I have read before just mashed together to make one. ***Spoilers** Susanna is in her rumspringa and has met some English people that she cares for a lot. Her dad has given Susanna a lot of free reign but now that her rumspringa is coming to an end she needs to leave them behind and she isn't sure she can. Her family finds out that a very close friend of hers is a man named Joey so they decide that Susanna needs to marry in a quick hurry to a man named Ernest. Ernest is OBSESSED with Susanna even though Susanna has told Ernest numerous times that she is not in love with him. Ernest believes that all it will take is discipline. Susanna then finds out that she is half English and she decides that is why she can't stand to continue to be Amish. All in all Ernest (who's story line just drops completely) marries Susanna's best friend and Susanna marries Joey. Very slow paced and felt like the author didn't really like any of his own characters. I also didn't understand the title of the book. To me it had nothing to do with the book.

I didn’t realize when I got this book from NetGalley and started reading it that it was the second in a series. I don’t think it really matters though as it seems to work well as a stand-alone.
Susanna Miller was in her rumspringa and was enjoying the company of Joey an English boy. She loved going to his parent’s house. His mother taught Susanna to play the piano and she loved it.
Her father had always been lenient with her and she would later find out why. After her father had gone to town and seen the giant Happy Birthday sign that Joey had put out for her, it was decided that her rumspringa must end. It was also decided that, since none of the young Amish men wanted her, she was to marry widower Ernest Helmut and help raise his two little girls.
I don’t like Ernest at all. He’s very arrogant…not a good trait for an Amish man. He loves Susanna and knows she doesn’t love him. He acts as though he’s doing her a favor by marrying her when no one else will have her. He even knows the reason. A secret still not revealed to her.
Read this well written book to find out what the secret is and how it affects Susanna. Does she give in and marry Ernest?

Being my first Jerry S. Eicher book, I was drawn in quickly although it was a tad different from other Amish books I have previously read. The Amish community in this novel is from New York and seem more strict on some of their beliefs but a very forgiving community.
I couldn't help but fall in love with Susanna right away. Her gentleness and spunk made me cheer for her. You can tell she'd make a great friend.
The pace of the novel was excellent. Eicher was able to speed the story up at just the perfect time and tied up all lose ends by the ending.
I have already purchased more of his books to read in the future.

Until I Love Again wasn't what I was expecting. It isn't your typical Amish book where the Amish girl is tempted into English life.
I have mixed emotions about this book. Yes, it's good, but I really don't know how I feel about the whole of it. There were a lot of things packed into this that I saw as negatives.
Susanna has both feet sitting on either side of the fence....one into the world and one into her Amish life. I felt like the scales were balanced when she was pushed into decisions that should've been left alone. Suzanne shouldn't have been for something her father did in his youth.
In the end readers will be happy to see there is a happy and sweet ending but to me it's sad.
