Los Secretos del Yoga

Rate this book
Originally emerging some 4,000 years ago in the Indian subcontinent, yoga began as a philosophy--the word yoga means "oneness" in Sanskrit--to develop deeper meditation. While meditation is still an important element of the practice today, the role of asanas, or poses, has increased over time to enable the unification of body and mind through a combination of breathing, stretching, and mental focus. Within this guide you will find explanations of the various schools of yoga, how you can expect to benefit from the practice, and a series of exercises to follow, illustrated with color photographs. Discover why yoga continues to maintain its popularity by embarking on your own journey of self-knowledge. Here is an exciting new series focused on today's most popular healing approaches and spiritual insights. Presented in a clear, concise format, the Secrets of Series demystifies popular alternative approaches and teaches proper application, providing a perfect balance of theory and practice. Perfect for new or casual readers, these handbooks are simple to follow yet thorough and authoritative. Covering a wide range of topics, they appeal to readers from every background.

This book is a newer edition of a book that was originally written in 2000. This was something that I looked up because reading through the book it appeared to be very dated, which is a shame considering the amount of competition for yoga books out there. It’s unusual for someone to wear a leotard and tights to a yoga class these days.
Fashion aside, I’m afraid that I was put off by seeing bad alignment early on in the book. Students of yoga should never put their foot against their knee when in tree pose as is shown on page 21, Though correct alignment is then shown on pg 34 and then 60-61. As this book is also for beginners to yoga it would be good to show a photograph of the foot against lower leg modification
One of the very good things about this book is the way that it explains to the student how to increase awareness in the position and there are grey boxes which give alignment cues to students wanting to have a home practice.
It would have been more original to have the positions in a class plan that was created by the author so perhaps they might start with positions like Easy seat or lying down and then eventually going into triangle pose.
My copy was provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
