I am biased as this book was written by an ancestor. What I love about this book is that it provides a window into a an understudied period in American History. Of particular note are the descriptions of the nature in the Ohio valley (parrots inhabited the region during that time). Of course there are regrettable violent acts, it is nevertheless part of our heritage. Again this book was of particular interest to me because it described moments with my ancestors including an Army Captain who was one of the few survivors of the massacre of US Soldiers (with the help of his loyal fellow soldiers).
Short but fascinating 1st person account written 40 years after being abducted on the 4th of July at age 10. Just as riveting as Huck Finn, but true. Highly recommend for any preteen readers who can stomach scalping. This edition has lots of footnotes and other historical documentation.
I am always interested in the history of the Greater Cincinnati area. Being very familiar with the Columbia area also makes this book a very interesting read.
