Without ever meeting him, Tai represents Mia's last trace of hope for the thing she holds dearest, her son. When presented with a very particular request by a desperate Mia, Tai sees a chance to help (even coming up with other more viable options) and simultaneously enjoy the time with this woman that captivated him at the first sight.
Mia was just as captivated, and when Tai starts to interact with his son, she has no chance to resist (and let's face it, no one could, they were adorable together, so much so, I found myself sighing every time).

“You look like you’re in love with him,” my mother said. I smiled dreamily.
“I wouldn’t say it’s love…yet. But it’s something,” I admitted. “I could fall for him easily…very easily.”

But when an unmeasurable tragedy falls upon them, Mia can't deal with her emotions and heartbreak and pushes everyone way from her, including Tai. And, even though he understands, it leaves him hurt and powerless to help her. But don't worry, soon enough she realizes her mistake, accepts him and his help, and never lets go.

Mia is such a strong and fierce character. I can't even begin to imagine the kind of pain she went through, and that will never completely go away, but she showed an incredible resilience that left me in awe. When she realized she didn't need to deal with all on her own, that in leaning on to him, she was giving both of them what they wanted the most, allowing love to grow and develop, strengthening and healing them.

Tai is without any doubt my favorite LLV hero. His support and care for Mia, in the most difficult moments were unwavering, even more considering he was battling demons of his own, especially regarding his past. He was such a sweet and loving character, and so open about is feelings, I felt he really wore his heart on his sleeve, surprisingly considering his troubled past.

I had done nothing but think about her for the last three months, and now here I was, falling head over fucking heels for her, and she may or may not even feel the same way.

But don't let yourselves be fooled, he may be a sweetheart through and through, but he wasn't any bit less of an Alpha, always possessive and protective of Mia against all others.
Their strong feelings and chemistry translated in some incredibly steamy HOT sex scenes. And their magnetism transpired every time they interacted, giving us a lot of sensuality charged moments.

And he had his wish, because Mia really gave herself to him, as did he to her, body, heart and soul.
We were introduced to some amazing new characters, that make me look forward to the next books, and we got to a chance to see some familiar faces, which are always joyful, and bring a smile to our faces.
This book was truly an emotional and beautiful journey. It had all the usual elements of suspense, humor, sadness, friendship and love, present in Lani Lynn Vale's books but taken to a whole new level. All these are the reason for which it quickly became my FAVORITE book by the author, to date. Very rarely does a book affect me emotionally like this one did. Yes, it was heartbreaking, but was also so very much more than that. I cried and suffered with them, but also shared their joy, happiness and humor. It completely draws you, from the very first chapter, and I literally couldn't put it down until I devoured it, in one sitting. That's how good it was.
Their love proved that two broken souls can indeed heal and make each other whole. And the beautiful heartwarming epilogue was the perfect wrapping bow for this amazing story.
A absolutely adored it!

I adore Lani lynn Vale's work. So far, every book I've read by her has been great. This was no exception. I laughed, I cried, I fanned myself ...so many feelings. Tai was such a great H! He stepped up when Mia needed him, even when he didn't have to. He was there for her for what I would assume would be the worst thing a person could endure. She struggled, but found her way back to him. They were faithful and loving. Great couple. Looking forward to more in this series.

This is the first in the Kilgore Fire series, BUT, big but, Tai is Jack's brother; Jack is from the Freebirds series, so there are characters that show up from that series, just FYI.

Lani Lynn Vale absolutely killed me with this story!! We are talking full out ugly cry! It's a true gift when you can have a reader blubbering in one chapter and in the next, laughing so hard that they almost pee their pants; thankfully Bean didn't kick in that moment or it would have been bad.

I have been waiting for Tai to meet his match since we met him. Mia is the perfect match for him, and OMG she had me in stitches..... there is one scene.... never mind. I love that we got to see the guys from Freebirds, it was like coming home a bit.

There was a lot going on in this book, tons of drama and as usual the sex is off the charts hot, but there is also something so deep and heartbreaking about this story that took this to a different level for me. There aren't stars high enough to rate this story. I think this may be my new favorite of her books! 5 stars just cuz amazon and GR suck!

I did like this book the characters were really sweet and compatible and the basis of the story line was good, I just found that at times it became disjointed and flipped from one thing to another and there were a lot of references to cliche situations. But over all it was a very emotional read.

Mia Darling is a mom struggling with a son who has leukemia, she has always dealt with the punches and when she reaches out to Tai he inserts himself in their lives. However when Mia needs him most Tai is nowhere to be found. Mia does what she needs to do to move on but another blow comes and Tai finds himself having to gain Mia's trust again, will he be able to?

This was a heartbreaking read, you can't put it down once you started. I have been waiting for Tai's story once he was introduced in Jack and Winters story. Mia, talk about a strong heroine she is outstanding in this book. Stock up before you start, you will need kleenix and hydrating drinks.

Title: Shock Advised
Author: Lani Lynn Vale
Series or Standalone: Standalone
Characters: 3.75
Plot: 3.75
Scorching Level: 4
HEA: Maybe...

The author takes us on a ride full of angst, drama and heat.
We meet Mia, a nurse and a single mother. Mia is fighting to keep her baby boy alive. She will do anything to cure little Colt from leukemia.
After pain and tears, salvation comes in the form of a donor, but it is not without Mia's efforts.
Enter Tai, a handsome firefighter who will ultimately be Mia's salvation.
The book takes its readers on a rough ride. The first chapters of the book broke my heart. Mia's pain was palpable and I marvelled her strength and determination. Little Colt stole my heart and kept it. His story was heartbreaking to witness and the development of it even more dramatic.
The writing is good. Lani Lynn Vale risks with this book because the theme might be a trigger to some people. It certainly affected me and I haven't gone through something like that, so up close at least.
The story is all about second chances and about gathering the strength to continue even after falling down. Sadly, the book lost it's most precious asset around the 20% mark. What happened after that didn't hold my interest and the whole storyline fell flat for me. If you read it you might understand why.
On the other hand, the author knows how to write steamy scenes and she can surely make her characters click. I certainly loved Mia and adored Tai for what he did to help her throughout the book.
I recommend it if you are a fan of the author. Keep a few tissues near you, you might need them.

From its Title “Shock Advised” by Lani Lynn Vale seems to be the first book in a new series called “Kilgore Fire” but during reading the story I felt at times that there was some information missing for me, which leads to my assumption that characters from this series must have been mentioned in previous books. But as this is my first book by this author I can not be sure.
The writing of this author is flawless and fluent so reading was quite enjoyable.

What follows next is the hard part – explaining why I really did not like where the plotline went - without spoilering it for others that plan on reading it. To be fair the blurb sounded really interesting that is why I choose to read the book, but the actual story starts off quite differently with subjects that are not only a trigger to me but also are used in such a casual way that I can totally not come up with any feelings for the characters afterwards. I was left with a nagging feeling throughout the whole book and an instant dislike to both characters.

So let me just say – when you have no problems with the reasons why Tai and Mia meet and what happens shortly – basically at their first “Thing” together (And I mean not the reasons for it but the way they act during it) - than you are probably good to read and enjoy the book.

So this is only my very personal feeling and there is a good possibility that a lot of other readers might enjoy this book.

Just finished reading this for the second time and once again Lani Lynn Vale does not disappoint. Everybody loves a hot firefighter from Kilgore. The book was full of emotion, hot and sexy alpha and a beautiful love story, not to mention some very hilarious moments. I also loved how it featured some of our old favourites from FreeBirds and KPD Swat. You will be taken on a ride full of twists and turns to your heart as Tai and Mia’s story is full of tragedy, turmoil, off the charts passion and an unwavering support system that will give these two just what the need to heal and love.

Received an ARC. Lani Lynn Vale did a wonderful job with Tai and Mia. The emotional pull at the heart strings is amazing. I was crying, laughing and reading as fast as I could to capture all the wonderful things in this book. A fabulous story with some heat that only a firefighter could handle. A journey worth waiting for, a heart breaking and heart warming chemistry along with a story that has your attention from beginning to end.

Little to no character development. From reading other reviews, it seems that, even though this was the first book in the series, you’ve met these characters in prior books by this author. So, unfortunately it didn’t gel for me. Lastly, I’m not a fan of Insta-love, especially in chapter one.

description

Fire means heat…
A new book by one of my favourite authors – yippee!! Firefighters, oh yah! The first book of this new series introduces a new group of friends and work mates at the Kilgore Fire Department – some characters known if you’ve read other series by this author. Tai is a firefighter but above all a protector and will go out of his way to ensure he doesn’t let someone else down. An advocate for the underdog, he is a paradox as he will do so much for others but expects, and wants, nothing for himself. Especially a meaningful and long-lasting relationship. Mia wasn’t looking for love either but these two were going to find not what they necessarily wanted but they desperately needed…
“I’d only known Taima – Tai – for less than a week, and I was seriously falling head over heels in love with him. It was crazy and way too soon.”
Mia is a nurse in the smallish town of Kilgore so it is not a stretch to think she would meet firefighters at the hospital. How she met Tai, though, was certainly different and a surprise for both of them. Tai couldn’t help but do all he could to help Mia and soon had his heart involved, too. Mia had other things to focus on but she couldn’t help the feelings that were growing.
I had no idea that my heart was going to be pummeled so much by this story but it did. I recommend Kleenex, bring a few. My heart just hurt for Mia and I wasn’t’ ready for it… Not one little bit.
I’m not sure if it was this the very different storyline but the flavour of the story felt like a departure from the fun-loving, super sexy stories I am used to. Not to say there wasn’t humour, there was, and there were steamy moments for sure but there seemed to be a layer of melancholy I wasn’t expecting. It could have been the mood I was in when reading it but I didn’t connect with the characters like I usually do. I don’t know if I needed more of the backstory first but I found myself wanting more from them, more of why things were the way they were…
Other than being greedy and just wanting more, the story certainly touched my heart in unexpected ways. And with a full department of characters to learn more about, I’m definitely looking forward to only more, more, more!

So even though I'd seen her name and books around, I'd yet to pick up one until about two weeks ago. Well, I picked up one book and went on a binge that lasted a week and a half and when all was said and done, I'd read all 22 books she's released and was suffering from one heck of a book hangover! I was so invested in these character's lives that I almost wanted to start reading them all over again. That doesn't happen very often for me, and I'm already counting down the days until I can revisit them. Since meeting Tai in Jack's book, Last Day of My Life, I've been eagerly awaiting his story and let me tell you; he was well worth the wait!

More so that any of her other books, this one physically hurt me to read. I can't really even touch on the issue without giving anything away, but you've been warned; have tissues handy. Just know that each time Mia cried, each time she screamed, each time she broke down, I was right there with her. A few chapters in and I could barely breathe. But even though it was painful, it was oh so delicious and worth it in the end. I loved how Tai was there for her every step of the way, even when he barely knew her. There was this connection they shared that just couldn't be explained, yet couldn't be denied either. It was raw, true, and utterly beautiful. My only qualm about the story is that even though there was so many mentions in his and Jack's book about their deceased sister Catori, it was never really explained a whole lot. And since it was told that Tai blamed himself for her death, I would have expected more of a backstory for her. Other than that though, this book was complete perfection. We were given a small insight to the next couple in the series and I cannot wait to dive into that story when it comes out in a couple of months! I just can't get enough of this author!

Personal Review:
This was a very quick and emotional read between a nurse and a hot firefighter.

At times it felt like I was playing catch up, it was so fast.

Random Ramblings:
•The tears hit me right from the beginning and especially during the funeral
•This was a very fast-paced story
•The bathroom scene was so awkward and funny!

Overall Feeling:

“My mother always said to tell the true quality of a man, just give him a baby. Depending on how he held that baby determined if he was relationship material.”

I have to try this!

I am a huge fan of Lani Lynn Vale and was absolutely excited to read Shock Advised, Book one in the Kilgore Fire series. I will say this story took me through an emotional ringer, and yeah, I needed some tissues! But as always, it was a fantastic story, and I laughed, cried, and simply devoured the pages. This is the story of Taima aka Tai and Mia. Both are weighed down with heavy hearts. Tai, is a firefighter, and Jack's brother who is in the Freebirds. Tai is well respected, and a hero to many, but he feels responsible for his sister's death. He meets Mia, the woman who changes his life for the better. They are friends at first, but over time become more. But then ... ugh, a tragedy happens and everything changes. My heart broke for Mia. She takes off, instead of staying to get support and love. Tai wants her back and will do anything to get her. These two have chemistry!!! They just sizzle. There is plenty of hot, steamy, SEX! A part of the story is absolutely heartbreaking and I didn't expect it at all. It was absolutely well written. The way the story played out until the last page, I was so so happy with the ending. This was so beautifully written. And we got to have some visits from the Freebirds and their families! I cannot wait to see those kids when they are teens!!! Five stars! Loved this book and can't wait for more!

I was given this book as an ARC to review honestly. I've yet to read a book by Lani that I haven't liked. She continues that pattern with this first in her latest series.

Tai, a firefighter who is battling back from a youth filled with bad decisions and heartbreak he's carrying over a sibling he feels he could've saved, comes face to face with a woman who changes his thinking on what it means to really live. Mia is the sweet, take no guff woman who comes to Tai out of desperation looking to do anything to save her sons life. And Tai is the only person who can help her.

This book. This book gutted me. I ugly cried like I haven't in a while. As stated above, I've been a huge lover of all of this authors books, but this one hit me so deep emotionally that it felt like a sucker punch. But even after all that, I give it 5 stars.

I felt like a lot of this book was more of a 'catching up' on previous characters. You don't spend a lot of time catching up with each one, but there are SO MANY past characters and it seems that Mia was meeting them non stop. It made the pace feel off for me at times.

Lani Lynn Vale is a go to author for me when I’m looking for a book that’s got an Alpha male and a strong heroine. She gives you some action and suspense as well as sometimes a little teary eyed emotion and laugh out loud moments.... plus some sexiness that’s always needed. I know that I will always like whatever story her imagination can throw out and it’s all wrapped up in a short 200 page or a little less book. Did I mention this author is a favorite? .....

Anyway.... this is Tai and Mia’s story. Tai works for Kilgore fire and is also a paramedic. Mia is a single mom who is enduring the single most horrifying thing a mother could endure. Tai and Mia form a connection while they are trying to find bone marrow donors for her baby.

I’m gonna warm you so this is a spoiler if you don’t wanna know but I know this could be a trigger for some.... so warning

Mia’s baby does die from complications of the surgery he was having.

So during this hard time Mia pushes everyone away. After a couple months she finally gets herself together and seeks out Tai and tries to win him back. There is a little drama with someone trying to frame her. Overall it was a good quick read

I enjoyed the story of Taima and Mia. She went through a great tragedy and found her way to the other side, and he was there for her through that even though they were strangers.

Once they give the attraction they feel for one another a chance, things start to get even better, and eventually spicy. Lani writes awesome sex scenes.

There is a mystery here revolving around Mia and the Fire Dept., and I honestly didn't see the totality of it coming.

The paperback edition I read had quite a few typos and words in places where they should have been omitted, but I enjoyed the story anyway.

I’m seriously becoming addicted to LLV’s writing. This author.. sigh. Girl crush.

I started at the beginning and now slowly making my way trough the older books. I don’t feel like I’m missing anything or ruining anyone else’s hea in other books... I’m just loving them all. I’ve read about Tia so far in all books I’ve read, Rejects & Swat, so yay to finally getting into his head!! On to the next...

What an emotional roller coaster this was! I fell for Tai when I read his brother Jack's book, and I fell for him even more getting into his head. He has SUCH a huge heart. *sigh* And then we have Mia's story, which starts out heartbreakingly deep. I wasn't expecting the level of intensity this story started out with! So, be advised... ;)

Throughout the pain & bit of mystery, this story kept me on my toes & turning pages! And I loved the way these two fell into each other. : )

“He’s a bad boy. He just hides it better than most.”

Tai spent his teen years and early twenties cultivating reputation for being an irresponsible, selfish bad boy. He racked up massive debt, and he was the fun guy, the party guy, but not a guy anyone could count on. Older now, he’s working on changing that perception and paying down his debt. A fellow firefighter gives him an idea as to how he can earn some extra money and through that, he meets Mia.

“I was desperate.”

Mia is a nurse and the single mom of eight-month old, Colton. Colt’s deadbeat dad is not a part of their lives, not in any way. After getting devastating news about Colt’s health, Mia comes up with a plan she hopes will help to save her son, and that’s how she meets Tai.

“He’d been our only hope. Some way—somehow—I had to change his mind.”

Tai is having second thoughts, though. Instead of going through with Mia’s plan, Tai comes up with alternate option, and he and Mia work together to get it organized. Mia is finally feeling hopeful, and Tai is all-in for the beautiful but scared single mom and her fireman-loving little boy. Tai is with her every step of the way, and the attraction between them is undeniable. But when the unthinkable happens, Mia shuts down and shuts everyone out, including Tai.

“You doin’ alright?” he asked.

“Yeah, I’m doing alright.” And I was. And getting better every day.

It’s two months later when Mia finally reaches out to Tai to apologize. Even though he’s hurt, he can’t fight the pull he feels to her. Someone in Kilgore isn’t feeling sympathetic toward the grieving young mother, though, and Mia finds herself embroiled in a mess that could cost her everything she has left. Just as her life is unraveling, a leak in the KFD is exposed, but the consequences of discovering who is behind it are far greater than anyone could have anticipated. With all the drama – legal and otherwise – swirling around them, will Mia and Tai be the support each of them needs to get through it all or, like everything else around them, will they crumble under the weight of it?

“You and me against the world.”

Kilgore Fire Department is another new series from the incredibly talented Lani Lynn Vale. She introduced her readers to the Uncertain Saints MC earlier this year, and like that series, KFD is a bit grittier and edgier than what we usually see from her. I was excited about the change in her typical tone and writing style in Whiskey Neat, and I’m thrilled with the progression of it in Shock Advised. This book tackles some difficult subjects, but Vale manages to pull it off with her usual brand of snarky and smart humor.

Keeping pace with her unprecedented slate of releases—she put out 11 books last year and looks to be on par to do the same this year—Ms. Vale has introduced a whole new slate of characters to her readers. As a diehard Lani Lynn Vale fan, I am giddy with anticipation to get my hands on these are new characters’ stories! One of the things I love about Lani’s books is the way that she ties in her previous works and characters so effortlessly and naturally, so it’s no surprise to see some of our favorite Freebirds and KPD-SWAT characters making appearances here.

I loved this book so much, and I’m so excited about this series! Five smooches from me for Lani Lynn Vale’s Shock Advised!
