Cardeno C. - CC to friends - is a hopeless romantic who wants to add a lot of happiness and a few "awwws" into a reader's day. Writing is a nice break from real life as a corporate type and volunteer work with gay rights organizations. This review is for the second edition of this book, which includes a bonus chapter originally published in:

Marriage - A Home Series Celebration by Cardeno C.

This book frustrated me. There was too much angsty back and forth between Caleb and Andrew.

I didn't like the huge leaps in time, and both MCs were so clueless, I wanted to shake them.

I usually love the best-friends-to-lovers-trope, but it took WAY too long for these guys to have a come-to-Jesus-moment.

Plus, even in book 4, Andrew's "bedside" manner made me cringe. He may have been a genius, but he wasn't professional.

And Caleb. OMG, stop with the snark, already, you defensive diva, you.

Even the bonus chapter left me cold, the only one in the series to do so. I thought Andrew had put his relationship fears to rest, but apparently not.

There were some sweet and sexy moments in this book, of course. If you want hot and heavy action, look no further.

This just wasn't my favorite book in the series.

Take two guys who have been best friends since early teens, then become sexually involved with each other in a casual way when both come out a few years later. Follow their story over a period of 20 years - covering family upsets, bad boyfriend choices and lifes general ups and downs, add to the mix some pretty hot love scenes a touch of humour and two endearing protags and overall you get a really enjoyable romance.

To be honest the improbability factor is pretty high and by that I mean these guys are so obviously mad for each other from the word go that to hold out 20 years before the inevitable HEA is a bit eye rolling. As kids they find each other attractive, as late teens they want to experiment together frequently and as adults they cant keep their hands of each other so what was really keeping them apart? Both have apalling taste in other men and the sex they have is far from casual in its intensity and passion, not the type you expect when its just "friends with benefits". Therefore when you get to the end, the impact of them discovering they should be together after all the years spent supporting each other through the angsty bits, loses its intensity and is a bit of an anti-climax. Saying that you cant help liking Drew and Cae or rooting for them and I did love the running joke of Caleb never getting the names of Drews ' boyfriends' right, that was funny! Plus its Cardeno C so like all his others you can't help forgiving those WTF moments and the sex is hot!

I totally forgot that Mark Westfield is Alexander Collins! What a wonderful bonus to hear him perform The One Who Saves Me. I'm sure he produced this one too, it's got his style all over it, just great.

This friends-to-sex buddies-to-lovers is very enjoyable, and filled with tons of humor. Caleb and Andrew have so much fun with their banter, and their friendship is wonderful. They've got great chemistry in the bedroom, and it started driving me nuts pretty early why they couldn't figure out they should be a couple, but that's kinda the point lol.

I like how Cardeno C. always slips some serious stuff in, but in the most appealing way so that it flows with the story. Weight and body image issues, depression, fidelity, HIV, and the anti-gay sentiments Andrew comes up against in his career as a doctor. Things which are a part of life and seeing how the characters deal with them just makes them more real.

thank you to the author for the audio copy of The One Who Saves Me

4.5 Stars.

This book was by turns amazing and heart breaking to read. The thing this author does absolutely AMAZINGLY well is character development. Its fair to say I'm a little biased about CC because, I'm not sure there is a thing this author has written that I haven't adored.

This story was vivid, real, funny, sad, bittersweet, and a thousand other different emotions.

My only niggle is that Even with this though I still felt like the story was complete that an entire picture had been painted for the reader to enjoy.

Another great story in this series!

I'm going to try and do more of a review later but since this is a new release I thought I'd post something right away. :)

This wasn't the story I wanted for Andrew, or for Caleb, based on previous books. But it was a fabulous story that I never would have imagined, so I am content. Yes...this story is sweet, a little frustrating, and I'm going to go back and re-red all the others to re-create the Emile CIty time line in my head. Okay- I'm going to go re-read all the others because I ENJOY the sense of contentment a Cardeno C books leaves me with....it's better than a tryptophan induced turkey coma...

Well duh!! It's a CC book, there's bound to be lotsa sex, but this was a 2 decade long 'best friends with very frequent benefits' package. Both Drew and Cae needed a good slap to see sense, and I loved the tatts/piercings that Drew got to remind him of his exes. 4 stars from me.

A best friends with benefits to lovers story. Caleb and Drew have loved each other for so long, sharing all their firsts and continuing a sexual relationship whenever they saw each other while unattached as they were following their own paths through different towns and different life stages. Although they are so involved with each other and each is the other's rock, they never imagined themselves as a couple, potentially risking the friendship, even as they go from one failed relationship/one night stand to the next comforting the other as needed.

The two smart men are a bit dense, but nonetheless it was a beautiful friendship to watch grow over the years. The two have a great connection, sizzling sex and the fun conversations I have come to expect from Cardeno C.and there are also appearances from the other couples in Home series. This was one of my favorites in the series.

I just adore Cardeno C. books. His books are smooth, sweet and character driven. Even though this book was one big flashback, it absolutely worked. I enjoyed going through life with Andrew and Caleb. I loved that they were there for each even when they were apart. It was just a good story as all of them have been in the Home series.

Poi iniziò a ridere.

Super promosso!

I really liked this book. It has a great progression on Andrew's and Caleb's friendship throughout 20 years. Their friendship starts at 14 and around age 18 become friends with benefits. each chapter is a year in their friendship and in most of the chapters they are having sex. So yeah there is a lot of sex in this book, but I have to say that it was good. Even for my own jaded have-read-too-much-erotica-nothing-can-move-me-anymore self the sex seemed "hot."

I had initially given 5 stars to this book but finally settled on four because I don't get how they could go so many years having a great FWB relationship without questioning their feelings.

In the end I am happy they figure out what's what. I do not mind the somewhat abrupt end of the book as we have 20 years to get to know the guys and how well they get along. I didn't feel I had to keep reading to make sure they still did because there was already plenty evidence of that.

PS. I love this cover. But the book describes Andrew as bigger than Caleb and the cover makes Andrew seem petite.

This is a friends to lovers m/m romance.

Caleb and Andrew have been friends since they were 14 years old. Best friends.

I really enjoyed watching Caleb and Andrew's friendship develop - they truly love each other unconditionally. And their chemistry is off the charts hot.

But.

Man did I want to reach into the book and shake some sense into them!!! Wake up, gentlemen. The man of your dreams is RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU.

And when Andrew was with Drake....I can't even. Andrew is a brain surgeon, literally, and I couldn't believe how stupid he was being in that relationship. Sigh.

Alas, they wake up and realize they are in love.

And the book ends.

There is a bonus chapter. But I would have loved to revel in their relationship a bit more with how long it took these guys to get there.

Bottom line: I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a great job. I wish these guys would have woken up to their good fortune a bit sooner, but I did love their chemistry.

A captivating love story of everlasting loyalty, friendship and love.

This is the much anticipated story of Andrew and Caleb. They met when they were 8-years old and rekindled their friendship during a summer at the age of 14. From this moment on they are each others confidants and best friends - his yin to his yang. They were as different as could be, but regardless of that or because of it, the bond that they forged was unbreakable.

Their bond was strengthened throughout the years. It started with their love of video games and music. Then evolved with the sharing of family secrets, sexual orientation and sexual experiences. As they matured, their connection grew with each failed relationship and every sexual encounter they took part in. It faltered with the pain, loss and guilt Andrew dealt with after his boyfriend's death and soared and stood its ground when they finally accepted what was right in front of them all along. They were in love. That sometimes elusive happily-ever-after kind of love.

Andrew, after having experienced the pain of betrayal that caused their parents marriage to fail, was determined to find his Mr. Right. That permanent person who would be there with him sharing the good, the bad and the ugly. His search for that person was heartbreaking and every single time a relationship failed it chipped at his soul. His only salvation was Caleb. The one person he could count on to be there. To patch him back together so he could get back out there to resume his search. A never-ending cycle of new found love, betrayal and heartache. It broke my heart to see him go through this. I couldn't decide if I wanted to smack him upside the head or hug him tight. And this could only mean one thing - he got to me and I could not help but love him.

I loved Caleb too, but I didn't feel that need to save him. While I saw Andrew like a brother, Caleb was the best friend I always wanted. He was funny and sarcastic just as much as he was adorably insecure. He cracked me up with his fashion sense and the roll of his eyes. I loved his choosy ways, he reminded me so much of myself. He found the smallest fault with the guys he dated and chalked it off to the fact that he wasn't looking for his Mr. Right. Of course, I didn't believe that for a second. I reasoned that he knew in his gut that no one would measure up to Andrew.

And of course, the chemistry between these two was awesomeness with a cherry on top. Like a keg of Diet Coke I savored each and every encounter. Their lust, their need and their bond were very palpable. They were in sync with each other knowing what the other needed without being asked. With touches and kisses, with each nip, pinch and whispered word I was melted into a puddle of goo.

Cardeno C, once again, did a splendid job in bringing this story to the page. The journey throughout the years was an enjoyable one. To see them growing from teenagers to wonderful men was a joy to me. Their friendship and devotion, Andrew's struggles, their lust, emotions and acceptance of each other was beautifully weaved together in a way that truly made this story real for me. The dialog was both entertaining and revealing. The events that took place throughout the story were perfectly placed to have their proper impact on the reader. I was grinning with happiness each and every time they got together, screaming at them to get their heads on straight and crying my eyes out with each betrayal and each painful thought.

This has become my favorite of the Home series books. My expectations were met and then some. Thank you CC, my excruciating wait was well rewarded. I couldn't have asked for more and as we all know I am a sucker for perfection.

This one is for you CC!

The blurb sums it up well and others have written great reviews for this story, so I will try to keep this short and sweet.

Caleb and Andrew have been friends since they were 14, the weeks in the summer they spent together was the highlight of their year. A steady and devoted friendship that spans 20 years develops, through everything they are each others touchstone, no matter what life throws at them, they love each other unconditionally and have such a great, deep and abiding friendship and understanding of the other.
They discovered their sexuality together, and continued to have a very hot and burning sexual relationship whenever they were together and single, and I guess that was my main sticking point, why it took them so dang long to 'get it'.
But if you can ignore that they were perpetually dense when it comes to their true feelings until almost the end, it was a great story.
I wish a few more pages had been devoted to the HEA, I mean I feel totally and completely sure of it, but I still wanted to see, it, I am very greedy that way.
On a totally unimportant side note, I loved seeing all the guys, Noah and Clark, Seth and Eli, David Miller and Raul and even good old Nick Galloway, even if it was just short cameos, I did miss Aaron and Zach though.

I finished this book, but reluctantly. It starts off a bit slow, then surprisingly gets crazy erotic/sexual (if you like reading about rough oral sex, then this is probably a good book for you...) then it slows down a ton. This book is basically just a waiting game... The prologue shows us that these characters will in fact end up together, so it's just a waiting game to the end of the book to see the characters have the super obvious realization of: "Oh yeah, we are best friends with amazing chemistry... We should probably date and spend the rest of our lives together... "

...Sigh...

So I wouldn't really consider this book a romance. I would not consider it a book of first loves or young love either... Even when the main characters' friendship turns into a sexual relationship, it is not done in a romantic fashion... They don't realize that they are attracted to each other or steal kisses or hand brushes or anything... It is literally like.. "Oh hey, man. I haven't seen you in a year... I'm gay, though, did you know?" and then the other main character responds, "Oh yeah, I'm gay too. We should have sex now." And that's that. So the lack of romance, the dim-wittedness of these characters, the odd pacing and the overall content and plot made me give this book 2 stars.

This story follows Caleb and Andrew from their early childhood over a period of about 20 years. They are very close friends and are each others 'firsts' (and in some cases 'only's') in everything. They support each other through life's ups and downs, with a lot of the story covering their failed relationships (and in between friends-with-benefits sex) as they look to find love.

It is fairly obvious from the start that they should be looking towards each other. Their own statements back this up. "And I think for some reason, you keep choosing guys who don't deserve you." Caleb managed to turn Andrew around. "Listen to me. I know you." He lifted Andrew's chin, forcing their eyes to meet. "I know you. You are more than enough in every possible way."

I enjoyed the story, although their love was so obvious, the wasted years were quite frustrating to read about. I also struggled to understand Drew's relationship with Drake. The attraction wasn't obvious and his subsequent downward spinal and self-loathing just didn't seem justified.

However, the total romantic in me loved the happy ending!

This wasn't a friends to lovers as much as it was a lovers to lovers story with delayed HEA. The fact that Caleb and Drew were in love with each other was clear to me from early on. They just kept their blinders on and didn't see the forest for the trees. I guess I understand that they were worried that a relationship would ruin their friendship, but my goodness, they were both really dense. Everyone else around them had figured it out long before they did themselves.

It was nice to get a glimpse of the other characters from the series in this book.

3.5 rounded up bc Goodreads.

You know how sometimes you just want to clobber the MCs over the head with something heavy, like a crowbar. That would be these two. God, they were perfect together from day one. We got to see them from 14 on up and what a ride. And by that I mean a hot, steamy, sexy ride. Another winner from CC which is no surprise. I actually save these books because I know when I've had a crappy run, I can count on them to remind me that great writing does exist. :)

My rating is a low 3 or a little under 3 stars. I enjoyed the parts of them growing up together and being young adults most. They were so sweet and open with each other. I wasn't as crazy about the part after they were fully grown. The guys and their behaviors/attitudes weren't as appealing for me then.

The best part of this book was Andrew and Caleb as teenagers and their summers together. Around the 50% mark I became bored with the weak plot and started to skim. How could they both be so clueless about the other?

Cardeno C. usually delivers on either a romantic level or for the HEA I crave...but even though this has an HEA, the miscommunication leading up to it was frustrating for me. The miscommunication just didn't work for me.

Belens Audio Book Review

Told in alternating POV, this is a friends to friends-with-benefits to lovers story with most chapters bringing a new year in the lives of best friends Andrew Thompson and Caleb Lakes. They've always had an unconditional love for each other, sharing all their firsts including their first kisses and all their first sexual moments.

I really enjoyed Alexander Collins' narration. Though he doesn't do a huge difference in the Andrew and Caleb's character voices, he does a good job overall with the tone, pacing, and other character voices.

Though they live apart, over the years they see each other often. They have a rule that if neither is in a relationship with another man, they can also come together sexually as well. Cardeno always writes such wonderful sex scenes, and Alexander Collins has a great delivery of the heat and chemistry between the two characters.

yes

I absolutely love the first two-thirds of this story. The genuine love, respect and affection between Andrew and Caleb is so wonderful to witness. Though the two date other men, they always come back to one another.
"And I think for some reason, you keep choosing guys who don't deserve you." Caleb managed to turn Andrew around. "Listen to me. I know you." He lifted Andrew's chin, forcing their eyes to meet. "I know you. You are more than enough in every possible way."

Unfortunately, there's a period in the story where it became utterly frustrating for me. Caleb and Andrew, who had always talked everything out before, suddenly stop communicating well with one another and their relationship becomes completely platonic. It's at that time that my old nemesis miscommunication comes by to play. I hated it, and I'm going to be honest and admit it almost ruined the story for me.

Phoebe_stop_the_madness

Thankfully, it's after a friend's new boyfriend points out that they not only belong together, but could actually be having a real relationship with one another and the only thing stopping them is their own stupidity, that Caleb finally realizes his blindness and their relationship gets back on track. Once they begin communicating, and sleeping with each other again, the story realigns and I was happy again.
"It took me years of failed relationships and dozens of self-help books to recognize what was right in front of me all along. But now I know. It's us, you and me, what we have together. That's the permanence I always wanted."

happy tears
This friends to lovers story has humor, romance, hot sex, and lots of wonderful feels.

Recommended.

4.5 stars ~ It's hard for me to believe that I'm already at book six in Cardeno C.'s 'Home' series and I love each and every book just as much as the prior ones. This author has a way of making every story unique, sexy, loving, emotional, and just plain wonderful. 'The One Who Saves Me' centers around a deep and abiding friendship that begins to change and the issues that can arise. It may seem like a stereotypical plot, but I've thought that before about the books in this series, and the author usually makes the typical into something unusual that I never saw coming and wasn't expecting.

Caleb, at fourteen, is not the average teenage boy. He loves going antiquing with his mother, he dresses just so, and he hates to get dirty. Andrew, at fourteen, is also far from average, but in a different way. Andrew is already attending Princeton as, in his words, "Yeah, I'm fourteen, too. But, uh, I'm good at school, or whatever, so I graduated early." Their mothers are friends and thus begins Caleb and Andrew's friendship, which in the very beginning is limited to visits during summer vacation. The summer they're both eighteen Caleb has just graduated high school, Andrew is in his final year of medical school, and they have both come out in a round about manner. It is the summer of experimenting since neither of them has done too much with anyone else and they are best friends, after all.

What follows are years of the best friendship I've ever seen. They tell each other everything, share in all of their ups and downs, get together when they can, and still share sex as long as neither is seeing anyone else. They go through each other's dating disasters and endless heartbreaks, career accomplishments and setbacks. I did find it funny that for two very intelligent men they couldn't see what'd been right in front of them for decades. How man ever managed to get anything completed in history, I'll never know. *rolls eyes*

Andrew is such a fascinating character. He's this blend of genius intelligence, arrogance when it relates to his work, and then sheer, unending vulnerability and insecurity about himself as a partner and lover, which leaves him choosing the wrong men constantly. All Andrew ever wanted was Mr. Right, but years and years of men cheating on him and treating him horribly leads him to an "open" relationship where he seems to be, not happy so much, but hesitantly content. Caleb is a little flamboyant, he's an interior designer, he's my very favorite character of a snarky, sarcastic bottom, with an endless amount of loyalty and love for his best friend. So, when Andrew needs him, Caleb is right there.

I'm running out of words to express how very much I love this author's work. Caleb and Andrew's story was so incredibly sweet and loving, while at the same time I just wanted to smack them both sometimes for not realizing what was right in front of them. When they did figure it out, well, I was so thrilled that what they'd been looking for was right there waiting and they got the happy ever after they both deserved. Thank you, Cardeno, I enjoyed it so much!

Andrew and Caleb are best friends from early on who begin to explore their sexuality with one another as teenagers. When they split up for college, they continue their relationship as best friends who hook up if neither is in a relationship.
Years pass and neither manages to find a permanent relationship that sticks. Caleb never really even tries, but Andrew yearns for a forever-man. However, Andrew is the most screwed up when it comes to his expectations of forever because his parent’s relationship was so dysfunctional.
Eventually, Andrew settles down in an “open” relationship with a very self-destructive man who ends up dying from AIDS. Though Andrew is safe from the disease, it hits him hard that he, as a doctor, couldn’t save his live-in-lover from the disease.
Crushed, Andrew moves back home and Caleb moves in with him to help him heal.
At this point both men are dancing around their previous “friends with benefits” relationship and something about the situation keeps them from starting that up again.
After a lot of misunderstanding and angst, they finally admit how important they are to one another and start a real relationship together.
**
This was my least favorite of the series.
I just couldn’t get into it. I think that the fact that they kept coming back to each other then seeing other men felt like a betrayal over and over. My sentimental heart couldn’t take it.
There were also so many side issues that didn’t get explored fully enough for my taste. Caleb’s body issues. Andrew’s self-mutilation issues. The whole AIDS thing. Andrew’s commitment issues. Caleb’s willingness to put aside everything for Andrew without taking for himself…
I felt that Caleb was mostly true-blue throughout the entire book and just willing to accept Andrew’s crumbs. Even the new Epilogue Ending didn’t satisfy but instead served to emphasize how far they still needed to grow to be in a healthy relationship.
It had a much darker, less sentimental feel than the other books in the series and as a result felt out of place to me.
That being said, I still enjoyed reading it, just not quite so much as the others.

Audio

Alexander Collins has done the re-make of all the books in this series. He adds some unique sound effects that I enjoy and is always good at the emotions in these books. I really love his take on this and thought he did a great job – especially with all the various characters in conversation together. I really hope he does the next ones, too!

Narration 5 of 5 stars

I am a huge fan of the friends to lovers trope, and The One Who Saves Me is an excellent example of it. Caleb and Andrew meet as kids, then again as teens (where their story actually begins) and we get to follow them from the time they are fourteen every year for the next twenty years. Each year gives us a glimpse into their friendship as it grows and flourishes, and eventually as it turns experimental when they start exploring their sexuality. It continues with their unique and unconventional arrangement when it comes to sex and intimacy when they are not involved with other people, but that arrangement actually serves to further strengthen their bond and intricately weave their lives tighter and tighter together.

I loved both of their characters, and if asked to choose a favorite there's no way I could do so. Though both of them fully support each other, Andrew seems to need more support than Caleb with his truly bad luck with relationships, especially after having to endure what he experienced with his parents. Caleb is Andrew's rock through everything, just as Andrew is always there for Caleb as well. I actually grew a little impatient as the years progressed wanting them to just wise up to what they truly felt. Even their friends could see how they fit together.

We only get intimate scenes between Andrew and Caleb, never with any other partners either of them had throughout the years...and that is just fine with me--their sexual chemistry rockets clear off any chart I know, and those scenes are positively explosive.

Andrew's quirk of how he deals with his relationships as they each end is interesting, and when Caleb calls him out on it when they finally come together in the end shows just how well the two of them know each other...and how the only logical way for them to be is TOGETHER, not just being emotionally and physically supportive best friends apart. In the end when they finally realize and admit they only want each other, I was breathing a HUGE sigh of relief and thinking "FINALLY!"

The One Who Saves Me was a 4.5-star read for me-if I wasn't so impatient for Andrew and Caleb to finally get together, I would have given it 5 stars. Recommended for those 18+ only due to adult language and explicit M/M sexual content.

Cardeno you pulled at my heart strings with this story. The story of Andrew and Caleb. Starting out as friends and growing to be so much more. Having their firsts with each other and growing old together. They share everything with one another from boyfriends to breakups. As each year goes by the guys friendship grows stronger and stronger.

Then one day the guys get together and their world is turned upside down. The lines between friendship and lovers is crossed and they don't know how to be anything more than friends. they are going to navigate this new thing on their own and they are just not sure it is going to work out. Can they find their happily ever after or will they just walk away from true love and remain friends?

This one tugged at my heart because Drew and Caleb had to fight their way through some difficult things to decide if their love could hold up and stand the test of time.
